To me art is something that induces you to think or feel more deeply about something important by demonstrating something 'deep'...
That's an extremely narrow definition of art. To many people, art isn't something rare, deep and important that you go to appreciate, it's something you can appreciate anywhere, any time. Is the song "Happy" art? Most people would say yes, and I'd agree. How about that neighborhood mural of Julius Erving in Philadelphia? I'm not a basketball fan, but yeah, I'd say it is. Is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto art? I think it's the finest piece of art ever created.
How about a piece alluded to by an earlier post in this thread, "Piss Christ", a crucifix in a jar of urine? Well, I think that, along Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain", which was just a urinal are art also.
However, the great thing about art is you're not obliged to agree with anyone. My only quibble with you is that your definition excludes the majority of what I believe is art.
Now you may say, should we be spying on Germany? Well, you'd be naive if you believed the German's weren't spying on us in some fashion
Is that really all you have? That we should do it to them, because (you believe) they're doing it to us? That leads you directly to, "well we should be torturing their soldiers for information, because after all, you'd be naïve to think they don't torture ours".
I have tried many drugs, including the hallucinogens. The effects produce no more insight than the oxygen starvation-induced delusions that people report from near-death experiences.
Vice also recently posted an article about how the FBI can't find any expert hackers because they would all fail the Government mandated drug tests. So yeah, the programmers aren't straight either.
I saw a paper detailing why people in technical fields are more open to recreational drug use, they found that the anti-drug propaganda doesn't work on people in this group because of the associated critical thinking skills, they will rather go out and research the truth about recreational drugs. Unfortunately I can't find it now.
I've worked in a technical field my entire career, and in my experience technical people have no better critical thinking skills than the average person. Tech people with liberal arts degrees are a little better, but then so are non-technical people with liberal arts degrees.
Jonathon Coulton's "Code Monkey" song is a pretty accurate picture.
I'm not sure GP was talking about pot, but probably about psychedelic drugs like LSD, mescalin, psilocybin, ayahuasca, DMT and so on. But even for pot I'm sure that, while there certainly are some who use it strictly as recreation, there are also those who achieve real insights under its influence.
Yeah, I read that bullshit as a teen too. I got over it.
" lowering the huge carbon dioxide emissions from commercial flight" - Until the energy density of batteries goes up and and we have an efficient, carbon dioxide free way to charge them, I'm not sure I see the value here.
Exactly. I don't see why they bothered in the first place. They should quit. Now.
...I'm trying to make you think I'm trying to make you pick green, and pick green just to spite me...
There need not be any logic to choice, sometimes there is...Now have fun coding that....Consciousness came all the way from the chaos of the quantum world...end up a mammal which calls itself human and writes so on Slashdot....Assume the world is in brink of total annihilation, you ask an AI to pick who gets to live from the leaders of 2...Turns out survival really depended on a pollen which made the chosen human sneeze....Mind is like a 0 dimensional dot, it's infinitely large and infinitely small...just asking to be shipwrecked by the laughter of the Gods.
I'm glad the experiment in Colorado is going so well, but please, leave some pot for the other people!
Again, it's dumb to want a president who is feared by anyone.
No, it's perfectly logical to want someone that people think has the stones to back up their words.
There it is. Right there. There's your trouble - "has the stones". The only thing I'm not certain of is whether you were born 100 or 3000 years too late.
Oh, and I never said it's a *good* thing that other world leaders don't fear our president, but apparently you use "the stones" for reading comprehension.
Okay, if it's that unclear to you; the comparison of the concerted policies of Nazis to advance a policy of GENOCIDE to some assholery by US government agencies that need some reining in is beyond stupid.
If you don't see the obvious similarity in policies, then I'm not the one being stupid.
Given that the first thing off the top of your head was Chicago's losing Olympic bid, how can I take you seriously? But if you want to throw Ukraine at Obama's feet, then remember Putin's little war on Georgia, while a U.S. president supposedly feared by the world was in charge.
Again, it's dumb to want a president who is feared by anyone. Fear is not the reaction you want to provoke, even among rivals. It doesn't end well.
For what it's worth, I voted for Hillary in 2008, and expect to vote for her in 2016. However, if you think I couldn't pull a one-side list of "failures" out of my ass for Hillary if she had won in 2008, then you're not living in the real world.
"Plus there's the whole free-fall and "I've been to space" component."
Once. Then what? I mean the Concorde had the "I flew faster than sound" aspect, and it flew somewhere, but even that died. Where is it now?
And you really think people are going to line up by the thousands to see "4x" of the Earth's surface... for the price of a house?
I've already seen the Earth from space, I have the Gemini photo album from NASA. From the 60s.
I flew on the Concorde. Worth it. If it hadn't died, I'd probably have done a few more trips over the years.
And yeah, thousands of people *will* pay that amount to go up that high.
You seem awfully jealous of people who can afford that kind of extravagance. Some of us do have the money. Hell, I'm paying about that kind of cash adding a room to my house... for the indoor pool.
I took a submarine ride down to 800 feet - we two were in the seat at the front with the hemispherical window, and the pilot in the station just below the hatch. Just us three - the sub was tiny. That was pretty cool.
Also fun was watching the 250 lb. rider from the trip before us try to get out of the round hatch - she was stuck for a few minutes.
I also learned I have a *small* amount of claustrophobia.
Conservatives are hypocrites, though that's almost unfair because they barely make a show of believing in anything, but the left are true believers in "objectification theory", and would make even sexy advertisements a criminal offense. Only thing stopping them from going full Sharia is that they don't believe in restrictions on women, and it's going to take quite a restructuring to make men the frigid sex, apparently they're hoping that most will turn gay
Thank you, that was awesome! I haven't read such a dog's breakfast of nonsense in oh, nearly a month!
If you think this WHOLE DISCUSSION is "tinfoil hat", then what the hell are you doing here?
I remind you: these ideas are speculative only. But the fact that you (and maybe even me) think they're crazy is not reason to not talk about them.
Okay, if it's that unclear to you; the comparison of the concerted policies of Nazis to advance a policy of GENOCIDE to some assholery by US government agencies that need some reining in is beyond stupid.
I find it worrisome that it needs to be said, because it seems nearly everyone is focusing on the distractions, while the real crimes, which literally steal peoples' futures, are ignored.
Obama has some serious flaws, but he did in fact save the world economy from being dragged into a depression caused by deregulation of the parasites on Wall Street. It must be easier for you to think about the world when you wear glasses that render everything in black and white.
And that crack about being unable to "command fear/respect on the global stage" is a regurgitated Fox talking point. You probably missed the fact that Obama threatened force, and was able to avoid using it, to get Assad to agree to relinquish his chemical weapons. Much cheaper, in both American lives and treasure. But don't let that get in the way of your narrative.
Conservative Utah has a pretty damn high (the highest?) per capita consumption of online porn.
You seem to be under the impression that conservatives dislike porn, and liberals love it. Fact is, both sides love it. It's just that more conservatives claim to be against it, because, you know, god.

If you don't understand my pointing out the circular logic of the gp, then I don't have any more time for you.
Now you may say, should we be spying on Germany? Well, you'd be naive if you believed the German's weren't spying on us in some fashion

Dude, you're an idiot. In more ways than I'm inclined to enumerate.
Take your meds, and go to bed.
I have tried many drugs, including the hallucinogens. The effects produce no more insight than the oxygen starvation-induced delusions that people report from near-death experiences.
Yeah? Go back and read it again. But sober this time. Put the cherry schnapps back in mom's liquor cabinet.
The analogy wasn't perfect, but yours was terrible. I guess that's what you get when a tech geek tries his hand at writing.

Shh! Don't say things like that. Stupid people might believe you.
After all, people still believe what Jenny McCarthy says. And the pope. And the NRA. And Fox News.

Triangle bookfish Niagra. Kudzu plain binding? French toes!
See? The problem is that what you're writing is gibberish.

The world doesn't need more code monkeys, but kids who have technical skills AND project management skills may get further.
