"The World Trade Centre outrage was co-ordinated on the internet, without question. If Washington is serious in its determination to eliminate terrorism, it will have to forbid internet providers to allow the transmission of encrypted messages"
I read a good comment on this quote on advogato today:
"An eye for an eye" does not mean that if someone takes your eye, you should take their eye... it means that if you take someone's eye, yours will be taken.
Worth some thought, in my opinion... of course, I'm in the UK and therefore not quite so inclined to be thinking about blowing up the middle east right now.
My sincere and heartfelt sympathies to all touched by the events of this week.

The moderation system is dynamic - before you'd even finished posting your comment, the score of the post you replied to may well have changed (up or down). Long after you posted, it may still change. What a waste of effort then to post a comment exhorting any particular moderation decision...
Yes, I know, this comment is meta-pointless... but at least I realise that.
When I read your post, the post you referred to was scored at 5 - by the time someone else reads this post, the original post might be back to 1 for all I know - the whole point of the moderation system is that the scores change (hopefully eventually settling down to an average perception of them but in theory they could wander round for ages before that happens).
If you'd bothered to re-load the page before posting your pointless comment, then the original post might have already found its way to a score of 3 or 4 considering the speed slashdot moves at.
And yes, this is a pointless reply to a pointless reply to a useful post... but it was that or do some work:)
kuro5hin is a really good technically biased opinion piece site - it reminds some people of 'slashdot before it sold out' or 'slashdot before it got filled with idiots and their hot grits'. The signal to noise ratio on there is very favourable...
This thread (although largely trolls feeding each other) eventually fascinated me enough to go find a picture of the young lady in quesion. I hereby submit said picture as evidence of the fact that she is in fact extremely attractive. Cute smile, particularly.
Well, I think so anyway... and I don't really care what anyone else thinks, about this or much else:) But I'm genuinely suprised if anyone really thinks she isn't attractive...
As far as I'm aware, the GPL simply insists that when LibraNet (or whoever) charge you for their software/distro, they have to make the source code easily available to you as well as the binaries. That's it basically, the rest is window-dressing.

Denny
PS - not a lawyer, don't work for GNU, ignore me if you want:)
I don't use Samba, so maybe that's why this doesn't make much sense to me - there main point would seem to be that they want w2k support - surely that is high on the main Samba list of objectives anyway?
Regards,
You've been reading for years but never got a user ID? Bullshit.
Less than six months after I started reading/. I realised that it was almost 100% necessary to create a user account if you wanted to be able to do any of the interesting little odds and ends the site allowed then (and that it has increasingly offered since then).
Okay, I suppose there's an outside chance you were too dumb to realise that a user account would be useful - in that case, you're too dumb to have one with a 'cool' low number (and what the hell difference does the account number make dimwit? The functionality remains the same whether you're #2963 or #987654321).
But anyway, my theory is, you're full of shit:) You've been reading the site for less than a year, and you've bought into all this 'low user IDs are cool' crap that has sprung up in that time...
irc.linpeople.org is the same thing as irc.openprojects.org as mentioned above... and yes, they are the absolute best for friendly helpful support - the post I'm replying to reads exactly like the one I was going to post myself - first serious perl related problems at work, I joined #linpeople on irc.openprojects.org and I had solutions coming out of my ears 5 minutes later!
You already have to pay to use samples (from movies or other records or whatever). If you don't pay for them and your record goes somewhere, you will get sued for compensatory damages.
Disclaimer: IANAL - however, my dad does work in the music business, doing royalties accounting, so I do know a fair bit about this subject...
I don't know about KDE, what I've seen of it looks pretty good (I use GNOME personally) but I very much doubt if Corel are at a newbie friendly stage yet... I found their distribution to be a pain in the neck, and couldn't wait to fdisk it... worst of all was that nasty file manager that they're so proud of...
I think they have some good ideas for making Linux more newbie friendly, but the implementation is a long way from perfect at this time... I dread to think what perception of Linux people could get from a Corel Linux box running Netscape (not our most reliable piece of software I think it's safe to say!), AOL (hate hate hate), and running on whatever hardware Intel want to get rid of because they're pushing new products out so fast that last year's stuff is now worthless in their eyes...
Maybe I am just overly pessimistic, but this seems fraught with potential to make Linux look bad, in my overly vocal opinion...
Throw 'em all in the Pratchett scorpion pit I say - on one wall it clearly says "Learn the words" - no more than they deserve for the nightmares they must engender in small children...:)
To my understanding this company was about as dead as a coffin nail (according to the Dickens phrase). So why do people persist in talking about them?
Most people agreed that Apple was 'dead as a coffin nail' (or whatever) a couple of years ago... then they released the iMac and sprang back to life like something out of a bad Hammer House of Horrors movie...
Now I'm not suggesting that Amiga are going to release a translucent / aqua machine (they'd get sued;) - but perhaps there's life left in the old dog yet?
Regards, Denny
PS, I've never used an Amiga in my life, so I know even less than usual about what I'm pontificating about:)
I don't think the first post was claiming that sendmail's config difficulty is necessarily a bad thing, merely that he finds it amusing to see an article on user-friendliness on the site that gave us that config system...
Try this Daily Telegraph article from the UK...

Linux UK runs on PHPSlash, which is a PHP port of the Slash engine that this site runs on... hence the similar look and feel...
Hopefully, as time progresses, Linux UK will move away from looking like 'Yet Another Slashdot Clone' and gain its own identity...

Comparing a beige Mac and an iMac is like comparing a Pinto to a Jaguar
Well, the Pinto is (basically) American, and therefore common as muck, whereas the Jaguar is (basically) British, therefore classy as you like!
Yep, you're right, there's definitely a parallel there :)
