    In 1911, it could have been predicted that 106 years later the Tsarist and Austro-Hungarian empires would be around and stronger than ever. There was no reason at that time not to predict that.

    The same person would have predicted that by 2011, IBM would have its Hollerith card tabulating equipment working at lightning speed. Advanced alloys in the sorters, better lubricants, and data entry girls from low-cost Southern states.

    My understanding was that they were cheap and plentiful from China, but lately they've been hoarding for themselves.

    The US has a significant of places where rare earths could be mined. The only problem is inertia from the long permitting process required to get a new mine going.

    Actually, it's closer to: real doctors with the assistance of richly informed AIs will be a lot better at diagnosis.

    Progress in strong AI has been exactly zero, whether 50 years ago or today.

    So long as you keep moving those goalposts. I'm old enough to remember when strong AI was defined as "an algorithm that could play chess."

    Not many countries have Norway's centralized approach. The previous comment about local authorities intentionally gaming the system by changing road signage, such as posting a new speed limit sign behind a tree, to intentionally induce violations is highly relevant for the US.

    In the Triassic, when I grew up, there was exactly the same pearl-clutching about television. It was addictive, it kept the kids indoors, and all they could do was stare at it passively and in isolation. The only thing missing was describing the situation in the terminology of the drug rehabs that so many of today's parents have gone through.

    Because today's devices are at least interactive, tech-aware parents can show their kids the full potential of their devices: online interaction with their school friends, GPS for hiking, helping Mom navigate by car, Yelp for road trips, Pocket Universe to identify what they see in the night sky, step counters to quantify their physical activity, games that build various skills, and all the different search options that are available for finding out anything they want.
