  1. So what's wrong with that? on IBM's assault on Microsoft · · Score: 1

Let IBM look out for themselves. That's a Good Thing(tm). If they do anything to help Linux, and hurt M$, that too, is a good thing. Yes, IBM was bad in the past, but in light of what M$ has done, do you think anyone will do that again? I don't think they'll be able to. Esp. if the justice dept. is victorious against M$ in court.

Are cool, but what we really need is better hardware support! I'd LOVE to get my hands on someone who could get X working correctly on my system. If I could get X working, I wouldn't use WinBlows at all anymore. I'd have no need. I also can't get the 2.2.9 Kernel to compile correctly! What a total pain. :-(

  3. I bet I know why... on BellSouth denies ADSL for Linux users · · Score: 3

Most likely for the same reason I had Linux on my primary machine when I was a cable modem user in San Diego. the ISP (@Home) loved to port scan people, and it's just too darn easy to drop those packets if you know how to configure your system. People running servers on 9x were routinely harrased by the admins, but those of us on Linux didn't have this problem for obvious reasons.

Most of the people I know at SWB Communications don't linux because of this, and other, simmilar issues. It basically amounts to the ISP wanting to maintain control, which isn't necessarily a "bad thing(tm)", but which I personally find distateful.

Sorry if I misspelled alot of words. See below.

Okay, but why not just hack that section of code out completely? Also, is there a diff that patches just that file? Thanks for the explanation, and for all the comments everyone.

How about in future articles, you post a link to the patch as well? This would be very helpful to newbies like myself who don't quite know where to find everything yet...

And I JUST compiled 2.2.9 today!!! Arrgh!

Sigh... Are you a laywer? I am assuming you are from your post. Frankly, I find your stance suprising! As someone who was very nearly a victum of the legal system, I can whole heartedly understand why Kevin is doing his own research. The public defenders I've seen are IDIOTS for the most part. That, or they are so TOTALLY and HOPELESSLY overworked, they cannot function in the role they are indended to function in.

For instance: I nearly lost custody of my children because a vindictive day care lady was pissed off that I wouldn't pay her for an extra day of labor. Her tactic to get me to pay, was to call the police and report me as a child abuser! My "Public Defender" was very very unhelpful. He wasn't willing to do, or suggest much of anything. It was kinda, "Well let's go on in there and see what happens..." to which I said, "Hey, hold on - look at this." I brought what documentation I had, as well as the results of a medical exam that I had just taken for this purpose, proving that I could not have done what I was accused of doing. Did my PD come up with any of this? No. What did the Judge look at? The stuff that I had brought into court. I got my kids back, but not due to the suposed "laywer" that I had representing me.
