BZZZ!!! WRONG! After "The Great Schism" of 1991, OS/2 WAS split between IBM and Micro$oft, and WAS the foundation of early NT. NTFS for example, is just HPFS renamed, and with a pretty face. The VAX/VMS stuff came LATER, you are 100% incorrect.
I know all this, because I followed it very very closely. I used OS/2 from 1.3 to Warp 3.

Forgive my ignorance, but didn't they support REXX at one point? Doesn't that qualify as a scripting language? When I ran OS/2, it was VERY powerful. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Well, two things: #1: WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator) DOESN'T need an existing copy of Windows - It supports the API for windows NATIVELY on Linux/Unix - so you Don't need both Windows and Unix/Linux on the same Box.
#2: PowerPoint presentations can be save by powerpoint as HTML with FRAMES - and thus can be run from a Web Browser on ANY system in the world. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Well, mind you I spent NO TIME AT ALL tuning this: I just installed Slackware (because I think it is the most difficult to setup, and wanted to show them it's better even worst case), configured X, added and configured WINE, and ran Word 2000. It came up. I didn't even TRY to make it do anything, I just wanted to prove it would launch! HOWEVER: I did get the Rc5 client (the GUI) from distributed.net to run in this exact same setup for an entire weekend, and it didn't crash! This got the attention of the other techs.:-) "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
I have had to fight tooth and nail just to setup a Linux partition where I work. They would actually see me run Windows 2000 Professional RC-1 (We're a Microsoft Certified Solutions Partner) than a stable OS like Linux. Even setting up WINE and makeing Word 2000 run didn't phaze / convince them. Sigh. Still, it impressed a few of the other techs.:-) "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
First off, Let me say that, as a former OS/2 user HOBBES KICKED SERIOUS ASS! Thank you for everything that was there. I still have some of the CD's and miss OS/2 much. Linux is cool too though. I'm getting used to it now. Let's talk about your post however. I see a few problems. I don't think they are unsolvable, just problems.:-) The ban the whole subnet is a really good idea, but I find it hard to bereave that this will affect too many people! It may well stop the troll's temporarily, but how likely is it that someone else at the same ISP will be a slashdot junkie like the rest of us? If memory serves ( and it usually doesn't;) there are something like 80k people reading slashdot daily? Or registered? I'm not sure this is a significant portion of the population. It will not cause the kind of disruption in OTHERS lives that will get the offender punished, because it won't hurt many people on a daily basis, not to mention that a half way competent troll will simply spoof his IP and look like he's on another subnet to get back in... Who does this solution harm the most? Then there is the limit on karma thing. If someone's karma is between 1 and 9, I don't think they should be punished. 0's should come in with a value of 0, and below that I think the block, if it were implemented would be a good idea. Pvt. Pyle ended up cracking in the end. How effective was the training method used? It did NOT have the desired effect on Pvt Pyle. Instead, it inflamed him to kill his DI and then himself. Do you want to motivate AC's and Troll's the same way? It's a good analogy however. I was a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy, who served with the US Marines, and we are taught the lesson of Pvt Pyle in Field Medical Service School for a reason - We need to spot them before they erupt! That was an accurate part of the movie.

This is a clear case of needing to sue them before you loose control of what you have written. Tell them that they MUST include a link to your site, or call the lawyers. Also, include a LINK on each page to a full size, well written license... "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Not to be foolish, but it seems to work fine, why not go live now? There are lots of times I can't even seem to reach slashdot because it's being slashdotted.... I for one can't wait! "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Yeah - esp. when you consider that the last exploit found for Linux was solved in around 8 hours - and that was just a DoS not a nasty root/administrator type attack.

Is it possible that we might some day get sanity checking on moderators? How is it that this post is marked redundant, when it was the FIRST post? I myself have been the victum of "drive-by-knee-jerk" moderation like this, and it is totally inappropriate!
While not very practical, and not well worded, I AGREE that sites like Cyber Patrol should be shut down, or at the very least harrased into non-existance by the rest of us. If you think all they block is pr0n sites, I suggest you install the "software" (Censorware, to be accurate) and try to access sites like the Vatican, and the National Organization for Women official web sites. These people are totally anti free thought, anti choice, and anti personal/parental responsibility.
And even they are SMARTER than a moderator who marks a first post "redundant". It's so bad that I think posting first is automatic criteria for slashdot moderators to mark you down! I never have, and I've burned through about 15 moderator points in the last two months.
How about it, Rob? How hard is it to implement sanity checking on first posts?

Okay, I'll bite: Where is the compiler in EMACS that is refered to in the article? How does one use it? Does it really have a compiler, or can you simply call GCC os EGCS from EMACS after hacking on your code? Could someone clear this up please? "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
That's because you were too busy being judgemental to pay attention. The lobby didn't have agents in it, it had regular people who just had to be plowed thru to get to the objective, so they weren't supposed to come back. The "sentinal" (Agent, actually if you use the movie's terminology, but any way) didn't die when shot in the head, his host died but not "It". It came back in another body, and confronted Neo again and again until Neo took him apart WITH HIS MIND at the end of the film.
This just wasn't a good movie for women. I'm not saying that because I'm sexist (I'm not - I'm more of a femminist than my girlfriend actually), I'm saying it because I don't know a single woman who saw the film and liked it. Most were too caught up in the films violent content to watch it. It was an instant turn off that prevented them from viewing it objectively.
And, Morpheus WAS saved, but it WAS not without a cost. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
Yes, I did like Dune the movie. It was so good, I went out and got the book, which I then read, and the 6 sequels, which were MUCH better than the movie, but the movie actually wasn't that bad. Just different. Also, it had Capt. Picard in his first movie role (I think) as Gurny Hallack which I think lead to the role on ST:TNG for Patrick Stewart. :-)

Oh, I beleave it. Not to sound like a survivalist nut or the like, but I also have weapons. What if there was no law either? I'm well trained in thier use, and as I said, I'm not a nut. Gold has been currency for a long long time. Same with silver. In the United States, our money used to be redeamable for silver directly! FWIW, I'm not predicting WW3 here, or Mad Max type stuff. I'm just saying, have some food, water, weapons and gold onhand. You never know. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
This illistrates perfectly why moving away from the gold standard was a Bad Idea(tm). When infrastructure freaks out, get's destroyed, it's government falls, etc. GOLD and SILVER still retain value. This is why it's good to have real gold coins, etc. locked away.
I use VISA, but that's as far I as trust this plastic crap. I was pissed when my former employer (The US Navy) FORCED me to go to direct deposit to get paid.
All things considered, this kind of tech is not ready yet. I'd like cash, please. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
