    Just use Yahoo! Mail.

Even though their POP3 service disappeared some time ago, I'm still using them. You can replace Outlook with webbased Yahoo! Mail as default mail-client on your windows computer.

They have built in Norton Antivirus just a click away, and you can scan attachments before you download them. That was how I found about this Code Red thing in the first place (I've been on vacation for 4 weeks).

  4. Old news, but good news on Civilization III from Sid Meier · · Score: 5
This isn't really news ... Civilization III has actually had it's own website for quite some time. Check out http://www.firaxis.com/civ3/ for "Ask the Dev Team", faq, pictures, screenshots and some other neat stuff.

Looks like they aren't going to create a whole new game, just polish the ideas from the original Civilization and Civlization II. For instance, diplomacy and war will be greatly improved, the terrain/resources-system will be better and just about everything will be tweaked to make it better than the previous versions.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to this game. I really like how they are listening to the fans and adding features on request (to a limit, of course).

  5. Gesturing in B&W - Fun, but .... ? on Opera Adds Gesture Navigation · · Score: 1
Gesturing with your mouse is cool, and Lionhead promised us a game without any icons or menus ... and we nearly got it. Still, there are small icons in the lower right corner of the screen that shows how the gestures are made. To further make the gesturing unnecesary, you can press 'm' instead of the initial magic-gesture.

In fact, I still believe it would be faster with regular icons (a miracle forest or a teleport gesture still takes 2-3 seconds - clicking is just clicking). I mean, the icons are still there, you just can't click on 'em as you used to.

Sure it's a cool feature, but it's more like a gameplay feature than a real improvement in user interfaces. It's hard for me that this would be of any real use in other applications. It's fun, but not much more.... unless there is something I'm missing?

  6. Crappy Alternatives on Trellix Licenses Blogger · · Score: 3
The reason why Blogger is better than other Crappy Alternatives is simple: people can sign up for a Blogger account at Blogger dot com and use it as a part of their own site, which, in most cases, will be hosted on some sort of free webspace provider (geocities for instance).

Slashcode needs it's own server - not everyone has that. Blogger is far easier if you just run a small website ... and I don't think the Blogger-code is free anyway.

Dan Gillmor got an email from Yossi Vardi of AOL pointing to a site where they document the API for ICQ.

Are you talking about http://www.icq.com/api/ ? Unless Mirabilis has changed something in the downloadable zip-file since my last visit, it doesn't look like something new has happened.

The ICQ API has been for download for quite a long time, really. I remember trying it out a 3-4 months, but the documentation was nearly non-existant. This link just points to their API, not any documentation, unless it's hidden in the icqapi.zip.

As for their license... yeah, I actually read it back then (I clearly remember the part about 10,000 copies), at that one hasn't changed either.

With "open" like this, who needs closed?

Who said it was open? :)

  11. Simple answer on Where Is The Line Between Programmer And Artist? · · Score: 1
When you play a game, you notice the music, the graphics and the overall design of the game. They're all art in some way or another ...

Programming can also be art, like a mathematical problem or solution. Normally we won't be able to look at the code, so we can't really tell if it's a mess or an artwork. That is IMO the only difference when it comes to programmers and the rest of the group. End the end, they can all be artists.

What it looks like will happen is that in a year or so, we will hear Nintendo barely hanging on as the X-box comes out. Unless Nintendo pulls a power move, probably in the handheld gaming market (which will probably be the rumored upcoming GameBoy Advance), they will bow out soon also.

Why so pesimistic? To tell the truth, I still have my doubts about Microsoft's X-box. It's just a better dreamcast/playstation with pc-hardware, capable of playing DVDs and many other things. I'm afraid that it, just like the PS2, will be way too expensive. Nintendo usually keep console prices around 250 bucks for new consoles, and since it won't play DVDs or ship with a modem, it'll probably be true for the GameCube as well.

Nintendo survied the N64, even though it sucked in many ways. A storage limit on 200 MB (or something like that) for games was a bad thing, and still they managed to make profit. Games like Mario and Zelda sold very well. Zelda4 is probably one of the fastest selling games for consoles, hell, my brother bought a N64 just to play Zelda :)

And as for the GameBoy Advance, it isn't just a rumor. The specs was released long time ago, and the little machine being sold in Japan right now, if I'm not mistaken. In fact, I think Nintendo could survive by selling the Game Boys alone. It's an incredible machine and money-maker (Pokemón gold is the most selling game in the states right now, I've been told).

Quake III, realistic?? Even with this super-new nVidia-chip I have a really hard time believing that FPS games like quake will ever be realistic. Nicer graphics doesn't equal more realistic graphics. But even if we managed one day to create technology that made games look exactly like reality (which would need 3D-monitors of course), I still doubt teenagers would have a hard time telling the difference.

I would like to see a token symbol placed on the screen that would constantly remind the player that he is in a game universe.

Isn't the icons representing your ammo, your armor, your weapons, and the frag-counter enough? I would think so.

  22. Use network. on Alternatives To The Floppy Disk? · · Score: 1
We do that at our school. Every computer at every building is connected to our network, which again, is connected to the Internet so people can save their stuff to Idrive or whatever they choose to use. Most people just save their stuff on our shared fileservers - those are also a part of our network and they can be accessed from everywhere.

As far as I'm concerned, floppy's aren't necesary anymore. If you need to backup something large, use CD-RW - otherwise, go with the network solutions. Pull a few cables if you have to, make people buy some netcards for their computers if they don't have already.

Of course it will happen once in a while that someone has to take some documents home to someone who hasn't got Internet. Floppy's can be useful in such a situation, but the original copy should still reside on the fileserver or Idrive.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the game at all, except that square is making it right now and will release it someday ...

It wouldn't surprise me if it would be one of those games never released outside Japan. It's funny though, I also heard it should be using some kind of a multilingual format with icons and emotions instead of words. People all over the world would be able to play and talk.
That would also eleminate the need for a keyboard - I'm just not sure I would like it that way... I think I would prefer regular chatting.
