    xanim and read what the author says.. He _wanted_ to do a codec and would sign the NDA, sorensen said Apple will not allow them to license it to third parties.

    How slashdot.org avoids this is indeed a tribute to their setup.

    Bah.. Setting up a web site to handle the crush is not rocket science. Look at some of the higher traffic sites.. cnn, yahoo and others it takes more then the /. effect to bring them down. Fact is I never had cnn.com _not_ send me a page. Granted there are times it serves em up slower then hell but it still gets it out. Where as its a regular occurance here to have the server not send a page.

    So, my opinion is, if this thing is an "end process", as in unable to extend the field further, then it being patented should be of no harm. However, my understanding of this leads me to believe that patenting this thing will hinder the furthering of mathematics.


    So who determines if this is an "end process". Remeber hind sight is 20-20. At the time LZW was on the bleeding edge of compression. Granted I think its dispicable that it was patented but thats past. Yes the US patent system needs overhaul badly (like limiting the patent life to 2 -3 years at the most) but alas one can hope that this comes about. We also can be thankful that there are people out there that patent things and then let the world use it. (Bruce Schiner and others I'm sure)

    Check the license file they included with it its word for word the GNU GPL V2. So what has been released is out there for good now. Any future versions they can change the license, excepting if they base it on the GPL'd stuff.

    The point being made here, and I agree with it, is if it was mentioned in the README or somewhere else I would have read it, said yippie and went on my merry way. Thats what upsets people is this behind your back phoning home with data activities of late in software.

    Thats the issue, if you want to collect information TELL US that your doing it.

    The problem I have with it is its not mentioned anywhere. It just does it and was found out by 'accdient'. I really could care less if it was documented. Just putting it in with no mention anywhere is sneaky and underhanded.

    On the installation issue..

    Do what Macmillian did with the quake cd's bundle the linux stuff with rpm, put rpm2cpio on the cd and write a small shell script to install the lot. Done. Takes about the same space as a win install.

    Ya know this really annoys me. I have purchased netscape all along. And so far all I have gotten is a shitty product. If they think I'm gonna give them another dime they can kiss off. As far a opera.. stuff it. I refuse to pay for yet another piece of shit software that if its broke I have to beg to get stuff fixed. Thanks but no thanks.

    1. Get nsam and use the assembly cpu cores.
    2. Use DGA, rendering in a window blows.

    It works fine on my cyrix chip PR 233. Also you won't be doing any sort of compilation massive dowloads or other things if you want good speed. Remeber MAME isn't just emulating the cpu(s) (usually more then one) its also emulating the sound chips and other assorted bits in the arcade machines. Pre-Built rpms are at ftp://wacko.gxsnmp.org/pub/RPMS if you grab em you'll need to grab the xmame one then pick your display method. (x11, svga, svgafx, xfx, xgl) and grab that one also.

    I prefer getting third party softare in distribution independent format ...

    Last time I checked at least three distributions used rpm and rpm had been built under solaris.. I'd call that pretty distribution independent. As far as installing stuff in different locations that can be accomplished via the --relocate olddir=newdir (providing the package was done right)

    You hit it right there. Digital distortion sounds like sh*t. All sorts of unpleasant sounding ringing (quantization errors) and other undesireable artifacts. Where as when an analog source distorts it don't sound as grating and sometimes sounds good.

    As much as I dislike the idea it appears the only way to solve this is to disable all anon/no account posting. If still want anon posting then accomplish it much like old (defunct) anon posting service. You post as anon, if anon is abusive and just a troll, yank the account, nuke the messages and go on with your life. Yeah it can be censorship. I tend to think its more like being responsible for what you say. Rob will probably not like this but as he appears to be bound and determined that anyone can post anything and not be held accountable. Which is fine, its his site.

    Your probably hearing the stuff in the attic being chopped. (Which if the sampled properly don't need to cut off) I haven't analyzed the output of the franhoff (sp) encoder so I don't know how that one does. I can barely hear the diffrence between the wav and mp3 so I would need a plotter to see the diffrence :)

    We treat linux the same as microsoft in this respect. MS comes out with a new SP, we wait for a
    few months till it appears the dust has settled and it appears to work. We do the same with linux, a new kernel appears we wait till its been tested. Just remember not every hardware combination can be tested. The stable label to me on the linux kernel means it runs on Linus's machine and more then likely will run with no problems on my machine :)
