One positive aspect of Monopolies is that they can spend more on R&D. However what has MS's huge research budget gotten us? Hmmm the paperclip, BOB, the revolutionary new features of XP?

MS has a monopoly due to a government mandate (their patent on windows). We should get geoverntment out of the equation and let the market handle it.

  3. No the point it efficient allocation of resources. on Microsoft Case Slogs Forward · · Score: 1

The point of the market is that it maximizes total surplus ( consumer surplus + producer surplus). Unfortunately Microsoft has a government issued monopoly (due to their patent on windows). Their monopoly power raises the price of Windows above the equilibrium price, transfering some of the consumer surplus to Microsoft. Unfortunatly this also creates a Dead Weight Loss that represents value that is simply lost due to Microsofts monopoly power. In short MS govt. privliges are harming the economy.
