  1. Re:Never heard of him... on Portable Pioneer Adam Osborne dead at 64 · · Score: 2, Interesting

I too met him - when he was in St. Louis. He was demonstrating VP Planner at a computer show. I remember him being very tall with an almost regal bearing. He had a marvelous speaking voice.

A friend of mine dragged me over to him and we talked for a few seconds. There was something impressive about the about the guy. Something I will never possess.

I used all the Paperback Software products until the end of the company. They were great. And inexpensive. Lotus sued and Paperback folded. Borland fought on and won. In the end all 3 companies lost.

Down through the years I used to wonder what ever became of him. I would go to Google and search on his name. The responses had him 1) wandering the world disheveled and talking to himself, 2) living on somebody's couch, or 3) already passed away.

So long Adam, the world may never see your like again.

I have been using 5.0 as a desktop workstation since the day it was released.

I have never had a problem with it. Everything I have tried has been fine. KDE, sound, graphics, all OK.

This not mean it can be used as an important server though. I have not tried that.

Follow the advice of the other replier and you will be in for a pleasant learning experience.

I just downloaded the mini disk and installed FreeBSD 5.0. I also installed KDE and several other applications.

All seems to be working quite well so far.

    Congratulations to the Release Team.

I received my CDs today in the mail. I haven't removed the shrink-wrap yet but I bet it's going to be good again.

    Congratulations OpenBSD team.

It was my first too. I used Caldera Network Desktop. All I have left from it is the thin mouse pad.

I loaded OpenLinux 3.1.1 last week to see the latest. It is OK but nothing to get excited about. Before someone buys a product there has to be a reason to do so. A product needs differentiation beyond a free mouse pad.

Caldera was special once, a leader. They seem to have devoted much effort and money making their way to the Linux fringe with one disastrous decision after another.

Does this company have a Board of Directors? When are they going to do something?

  7. You don't know the half of it on When IT and Bad Government Meet, Everyone Loses · · Score: 1

I work as a network engineer for a formerly-major midwestern city.

If you knew one-tenth of what went on you would damage yourself laughing. Our network manager has no idea how anything works but he can expound for hours on any IT topic. It is all complete nonsense. Recently some of his emails made their way to the Internet where they created a positive sensation. He got his job because he was here first. He is a thug and a bully who often comes to work smelling of booze. The people above him lap it up because they don't know anything about it either.

We have wasted more money than you can count in one lifetime.

It is impossible to get good people to come here to work so we use overly-promoted secretaries and clerks. Everyday is a little worse than the one before.

Believe me, these problems in Wilkes-Barre are nothing.

I use Conectiva 7.0 and I like it a lot. I also use Mandrake and all 3 BSDs. Conectiva has just the right amount of graphical-install and do-it-yourself that many people seem to yearn for. Both version 6 and 7 have found all the hardware except sound cards on my computers. After I finish the graphical install I use Red Hat's sound configurating program which is installed and waiting.

I think this is a very good product that has been overlooked too long. I recommend it to any beginner who finds other distributions too overwhelming. ISO's are available at linuxiso.org and it installs with a choice of the 3 major languages of the Americas.
