Presumably, someone somwhere at one point used "shock and awe" when they wanted to say Blitzkrieg, but didn't want to associate with Ze Germanz. This was said once. Then, the media began pumping out this one phrase over and over again until everyone is sick of it like we are now. Watching the original speeches and press releases around 9-11 and then watching the news later that day showed me that this is how this sort of stuff really works.

In the end I'd rather have a sweet video card as opposed to possesing the self-rightous knowledge that I had, through my pissing and moaning on Slashdot, single handedly driven a profitable company into the ground, which seems to the implied goal of many here.

Actually, the original poster was specifically rooting for ATI since they would be a "foil" to NVidia's apparently obvious intentions to become the next Microsoft. I was attempting to point out that just because one company has more sucess than another doesn't necessitate it becoming a huge monolithic monopoly. And that sometimes it's even okay to like a company that features such foreign business concepts such as "success" and "profits".
We piss and moan about companies making money, but in the end, they're not fucking charities. People need to pay bills, you all need jobs (at least your parents do) to pay for your internet connection so you can bitch about big companies all day on Slashdot. My 2 cents.
More importantly, as someone is guaranteed to have already mentioned, competition is inherently a good thing. Competition can stimulate innovation (gotta build a better product) and pins down prices to realistic levels (gotta be best value).

It seems the only way people can be satisfied is if the "bigger" company gives half of it's money away to the "smaller" company, producing two equal companies. The idea that by being really smart or working really hard you can get ahead.
Apparently these people would prefer than nobody ever gets ahead, and we have some sort of Communist/Robin Hood "rob from the successful and give to the unsuccessful" system put in place. Since lord knows, every big company is just shooting to become a giant, horrible, Microsoft-like monopoly.
And what's in a $200 graphics card after a few months will be in a $50 graphics card in a few more months, at which point I'll buy one.
Why does this get modded up? That's great that you don't have much interest in 3d gaming and/or you don't feel the need to buy the latest and greatest. Lots of people have different interests in different things. If the latest video card doesn't interest you, move on.
However, just because you're not throwing down $400 for a new graphics card, you're no saint. You didn't save any whales, the world hasn't been made a better place. People need to buy the latest and greatest shit so that the technology can eventually filter down to you. That's how it works.
Letting the world know you don't care to spend money on a top dollar video card is about as insightful as me saying how I'm not going to smoke crack and kill hookers all day today.

Something which I find very ironic is that the spam-wars seem, to me at least, to parallel the US's drug war in many ways. I hate spam, and I do think that it should be illegal to have fake unsubscribe info and spoofed headers.
However, as long as people keep buying penis enlargement pills, people will keep sending spam, the same as the burning down a coca field in columbia won't stop Robert Downey Jr from blowing lines off a stripper's ass.
I think more resources should be spent redefining some sort of authenticated SMTP and educating dumb people that not everything they read is true. Less time wasted with filters and blocking (and god help us, the random social policies of the 10 dorks of SPEWS who inadvertantly block half of the internet from time to time).

You're correct, and my position was a little overstated. I guess I'm venting my frustration about the "Slashdot Attitude" against sucessful companies/non-GPL software that's constantly shown. I think the story was worth posting, but the smug attitude at the end was annoying.
Let's see... what would make everyone on slashdot love apple:
1. Setup RMS as the CEO/President/Company Savior 2. Release all software completely open source 3. Port OSX to the PC 4. Become a huge, massive corporation that uses it's installed base of now open source software in some sort of monopolistic shutout of Microsoft, putting M$ as we like to call it, out of business 5. Put all movies and music online to download for free 6. Send in Steve Jobs with a machete to hack all RIAA/MPAA/Record Co Execs to pieces. 7. Immediately go out business, since we hate big companies.
Would that fix everything? I hope so. If it doesn't work, we can have Apple shoot some sort of Natalie Portman porn and see how that works out.
