Why does Ford/GM/et al hang the codes on a light? Why not have a spot on the dash that prints out the codes ASCII? check gas cap, water temp sensor bad, cold start injector not working. Why hide the results of the code from the owner?
I venture that a marketing opportunity exists. This car, this model; it shows what the code is in actual text. You may fix it yourself, gas cap. Or you may have an indie mechanic fix it. Or you may decide to go to the dealer.
Me? like Car Talk, I just put black electrical tape over the check engine light. eof
Construction can sit idle for a long time. Before the 50 story plus Pru was built in Boston in the early 1960's, the last large scale construction dated before 1929. A span of almost 40 years.
What about the ISS? It has current costs an order of magnitude larger than the Big Dig. Final cost, if not cancelled, will be probably two orders of magnitude.
Big Dig is small change compared to ISS. And you can drive through. (But I liked the view of Boston from the elevated I-93, especially at night.)
In 1981 I remember being in the ISU campus bookstore, Ames, Iowa looking at a card table staked high with brand new K+E slide rules for a closeout price of $ 2.00. And to this day I just kick myself for not stocking up.
These rules had bamboo wood slides and an onion paper manual tucked into the box. Of course these rules resided inside a spiffy black leather holster. As a kid I can remember the smell of the leather when Dad showed me his K+E slide rule.
Think disposable. Similar to toner swaps. Not everything needs to run 50K hours for it to have a useful life.

Telecommute. Buy a service truck. Get a plumber's license. Telephone rings. Commute to the leaky pipe.
I ditto the idea for SolidWorks to get onto Linux.
Last summer I asked a SolidWorks sales VP, Boulder-Denver, if a Linux port was in the pipeline. He said no; "We're sticking with MS."
Has anyone had any success using 3d cad on a linux box; what is it called, VariCAD?
