then we go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterNIC look at the section internic and icann, again it's a contract agreement for services, the DOC retains control of it.

I wish I had the note's where it's mentioned in the DOC that they own it lock stock and barrel. But the current circumstantial points that I might be correct.

  11. Re:With profits like these... on Are We Seeing the End of Big Oil? · · Score: 1

If the USA legal system allows it, then do it.

Hiding profits is hugely important, since the firm with the most cash wins at the end of the day so there are many incentives to do this.

Now on to a small but important topic about the rig:

One thing I recall from my cargo/chartering days, if I placed and order for a vessel construction, then gave that vessel a contract to move my cargo for it's expected life ( 10 or 15 years ) after delivery, I could take the contract to a bank and they would finance the construction of the vessel ( this is assuming that the buyer of the cargo was credit worthy, the seller had the product for the buyer and the only thing missing was the vessel )

the above is valid for oil rigs, BP orders a rig for construction via a shell company, BP issues a contract for exploration at a fixed daily rate for the life of the rig ( 10 to 15 years ), a bank looks at the credit of BP and the shell company, and issues the financing for the rig to be built for the shell company.

think of it as a house construction mortgage that turns into a regular mortgage with no right to sell until you pay off the mortgage, does not mean that you can not lease out the house to cover the construction cost.

Maritime laws are rather old and work real well, the issues within the law need to address our current growing concerns about the environment, which slowly and carefully are being addressed. tons of freight move daily on the blue waters, small changes to the law change operational cost. In my past, I have seen the price of fuel eat the profits of a carrier and put them out of business, I've also seen the cost increase where exports became non-profitable to do, leading to a loss of jobs.

Good example was the freight pricing wars in the 90's, scrap steel freight rates got so cheap that carriers stopped moving it, it caused supply problems in Asia and it was not until scrap metal prices increased where suppliers and vessels owners could get a profit that started moving again.

The point is for Facebook, is that they built out a monster that needs to be tamed.

Can it be done in Mysql, Yes, it's a total pain in the ass, but they can do it.

it would require them to start with the least used parts of the platform, rip and replace with cleaner code that's well documented in order for future upgrades. step by step, in small targeted teams each working towards the frequently used routines.

As for those that complain about Mysql not being the best platform... How the heck are you to grow your business when you don't have the resources, not many people know how to tune an Apache server, say the least a Mysql server, so you start on the lower end. grow out, make some change then start thinking.

Now I will agree that most people never think of the Database side of web site, that's a shame.

OK, In my past I moved cargo on vessels all the time, up to 2000 TEU's at a clip, here is the trick to get extra coverage.
a bill of lading ( that's the cargo receipt for all intensive purposes ) has a column that states number of packages. fill that out to say 20 boxes instead of saying 1x20ft container, what you just did was transfer the liability of 1 container box that's insured for 500.00 ( the line will cover 500 due to legal rules ) to 20 boxes being insured for 500 each. simple and effective.

will it work, most of the time yes, but sometimes that steamship line will say no.

As for reporting to a customer that they lost the cargo, if you move volume, that's something that they will break a relationship for. NO one wants to hear of losses and in a JIT ( just in time ) environment, it could be very costly. It happened to a customer of mine, a container went over, cargo sank to the bottom. had to charter air freight to keep his plant running. from that day forward, he became my best client, I did not loose the cargo, another carrier did, but what we created for the client was a way to get the fast containers always in JIT and have a container on a slow boat that would show up off cycle ever 9 weeks, what it provided for him was insurance, peace of mind, and a container taking up little space in my warehouse for a few weeks ( he would send a guy with a pick-up to get a supplies when he got tight on supplies.

I would rather ship with a slower carrier that would put my cargo underdeck for 25.00 per container than being above deck. No one wants too report that container is lost, you can kiss the client goodbye

Now I don't have the typical nerd cred's ( like top 20 in my class ) but I could tune an engine back in my days with a screwdriver, adjustable and a vacuum gauge. I wrote in 6502 assembly and had fun re-writing compiled c-64 code so that the graphic routines would run faster. Most people today ask me for computer advice ( I charge in beer and food ) or how to get something done ( It seems that I must have a ton of useless knowledge, go figure? ). I read alot of stuff just to learn something new, even if I will never use it ( well it did come in handy when my dad was going to get a heart valve, and I proved to the doctor that it had a higher failure rate than the one I wanted used, my dad is now 82 years old and still kicking and that doctor died like 10 years ago )

I am a proud to be called a nerd. Call it to me in public as an insult and I will give you a public dissertation on how you suck at everything Cyrano style.

Also, the greatest thing about being a nerd, I go where I please, I make good money because people pay us for our knowledge. there is not one hot spot I can not get into and not one person that I can not walk up to and say hi.
