Well, gstreamer might win the support from the desktop projects instead of xine. It's already used by gnome, and i think the kde guys are looking into it too since the c++ bindings were quite nice. Lets hope that gnome/kde just decide on one thing to use for multimedia architecture =)
I think a projects like gstreamer has far more future than mplayer. It's true that mplayer has far more codec support, but what is really needed is a multimedia architecture, such as gstreamer.
This is one important step getting linux closer to the desktop.
Either that or you can join mandrake club which has had them too for a couple of weeks, although that is currently an unrleases version 4321 which the boxed versions are going to carry. It works here though =).
No, this is actually a better evidence than 220 people with no specific names. Statiscal that is, i think that is some of the (intentioned) phun =). Picking a specific name is merely a way saying that the selected persons were chosen randomly of out every ph.d out there.
Picking out 220 ph.d's out of every ph.d in the US. and they end up having the same stance on a particular issue is not much prove at all as you say. There is no one who can claim that they are truly choosen randomly, and therefore representing the rest of the ph.d's
However if you say that all them must be named steve you have chosen a group (hard to prove otherwise) that they have been elected randomly out of all the ph.d's.
If this group then have a particular stance on a issue it is well proven that it could represent all of ph.d's in the US
This however doesnt prove _anything_ about the particular issue, but it does say something about what the opinion of the ph.d's in general are.
It really is a very impressive piece of engineering. It is also an impressive work of alianating everyone else.
However saying 'this codec works' is not enough. I agree they have always have the upper hand on codecs, but why should the interface be so horrible?
Compare it to a player like Totem: http://www.hadess.net/totem.php3 which currently uses the xine framwork. It plays everything but quicktime / parses asx.
I recomended you look at xine or gstreamer for some solutions with a real future as a framework for multimedia.
It's true that linux and video isnt perfect. However this guy... WHO is he?
They point you at an RPM that installs apt, the Debian package system!
After that sentence I stopped reading.
1) He doesnt know what he is talking about
2) Video on linux (for users) will never be good enough untill it just 'works' on a freshly installed distribution.
Mod the above guy up. I would, but i dont have any mod points. It really has NOTHING to do with supporting gamespy. They didnt make up the way it works - id (Carmack?) did.
This query method originates from from the quake 1 game. Although i'm not sure if it's the quakeworld version or the original version quake. It's basicly leftover from the days when online fps gaming was in its infancy. Remember that half-life was developed on a licensed quake1 engine.
I really doubt any game developers was thinking about DDOS attacks when making games in 1996 (quake 1).
I think this method got so widespread use with counter-strike and the quake game, that new game developers just used the same method, without considering the security issues in the era of 'modern' internet.
I can actually start Simcity 4 with my original Battlefield 1942 CD. It even shows a nice Battlefield 1924 logo when starting simcity 4. I'm not lying:=)
So is my bought battefield 1942 cd a circumvention device?
And can EA sue EA for making a curcumvention device that breaks EA's copy protection?
Q. What will happen to existing Deersoft Inc. products and customers?
We will take the existing product off the market immediately and will launch an enhanced version in the second quarter of 2003. Network Associates has assumed all support obligations for Deersoft customers. Existing Deersoft customers can contact a technical support representative at 1 800-722-3709.
YES US TELEPHONE SUPPORT! it's *SO* cheap calling from Denmark to US.
Anyway as happy user, I seriously doubt anything worthwhile for existing customers will come out of this.
The critique that open source that open source is not that innovative is in my oponiion somewhat right if we look at the final product(not how it's made).
I know it's not a new idea but i've never seen any real implementation either. This is at least a try of something new and not seen in any other major desktop OS.
As a political interested dane i didnt find any real errors. The tax figure is probably an average.
The first "pool" of your income is taxfree (very small amount), Then there are a few more "pools" with a different tax for each, with a higher tax percentage for each level. I think it starts at ~30% and ends in about 62%. So if you earn of money - you pay more than half in income tax.
Now, there is an issue with regard to patents, if MS has any on this technology.
Can anyone shed light on patents policies in the DVD-forum?

Mandrake HAS fixed the dependency problem for RPM's.
(URPMI)
Partly right.
;).
zeroconf is NOTHING new, it's an open standard. Apple just branded it 'rendezvouz' (trademark) to make it a sexy mac thing

Please read the store first, and please understand the issues before posting. Linus's stance is actually very openminded
It's called a "Dankort".

I live in denmark so i'm okay..... i guess. We DID however get a somewhat DMCA like law the 22 dec. 2002..... oops.
;)
But then again i trust the danish court system

No problems for me either in denmark (SMS).
I'm interested in any usage of WAP too, was pretty horrible last time i tried it.
Last time i installed redhat/mdk
It booted in the CD and the rest i got from the network.
i HATE floppies.
I think you should read up on RPM features.
I at least know that there exists multiple 'provides' (=satsfies?) for packages.
I think someone tried to this, Floppy RAID. Was a site specificly for stupid ideas like that =).
If only i could remember where =)

So if you earn ALOT of money......

Count me in.
This doesnt make sense to me. I havent even seen a MS mobile phone on sale.
Besides everybody already has a mobile phone, that has nothing to do with MS. It's not like there isnt any real competition.
This guy is clueless beyond imagination.. Anyway..
The Xfree86 stuff he is getting riled up about is probably this
While the gnome/gtk stuff is here and here
How he mixed it together is - impressive.
