  1. In defense of the parent on World of Warcraft Expansion News · · Score: 1

I cringe a bit seeing this modded 0, troll. Too bad my modpoints just expired.

I realize the link no longer makes any mention of a new class and a level 70 vs level 75 level increase. But, this morning, before this story was posted to slashdot, this exact link did claim the level cap would be raised to 75 and that there would be a new class (and at that time, there was no mention of a new profession). It has been changed since this morning, which should give you an idea of how much stock to put in this sort of information.

The parents' points are insightful and correct especially with regard to raising the level cap. I think this is very unlikely, and all the blue posts on the topic on the WoW forums corroborate - everything in the game is balanced around 51 talent points in a very, very intricate way, and you CANNOT raise the level cap beyond 60 without rebalancing every class at once. Given how slow they have been working on their current class revamps, it is insane to think they would do that.

  3. Re:The Open Source Hair Salon on Bill Gates Speaks Out · · Score: 1

I think your arguement is misleading. The bottom line is that 99% of open source software is written by people who are not paid for writing that code and who hold other real jobs, which is frequently also writing code for which they are paid, but which is generally also not free.

There are a few Mozilla Foundations and Red Hats out there where people can get paid for writing open source code, but its the exception rather than the rule. The majority of open source software is indeed a labor of love and not of profit. Of course, the true majority of open source software that you find on a place like sourceforge is also crap. But that's not really relevant.

And most individuals that WRITE open source code, have no capacity to profit from their code by selling support. They are programmers, not businessmen. Its easier for a lone programmer to stick an excellent program like Textpad out on a website and try to sell it directly, than to try to come up with a business arrangement wherein they can charge for support - if your open source code is good, it's more likely that someone else will succeed in profiting from it by charging for support than the actual author.

  5. Re:PSP is great on Sony Describes DS As Gimmick · · Score: 0

The PSP loading times CAN be pretty bad, and rather frustrating. But one thing the PSP has going for it that the DS does not is the ability to suspend it at essentially any point and turn it back on right where you left off. That helps to mitigate the loading times in that you dont have to wait for the game to load each time you start playing.

Honestly, I bought my PSP now ONLY because I wanted to get a 1.5 before they had been replaced by 1.51s in the stores so I could do homebrew. I think what Sony really needs to do is GET SOME DEMO UNITS. I don't know anyone personally with a PSP and I hadn't used one before I bought one. If I had played a demo unit I probably would have bought one sooner, and I think the whole "we don't need no demo units" is also part of Sony's arrogance.

While ingame ads would break the atmosphere of a game like Worlds of Warcraft massively, Anarchy Online can get away with it without it being very intrusive because of its setting. For instance, Anarchy Online has the "shadowlands" which are like a magical realm - there are no ads in the Shadowlands. There are only ads in the (futuristic) cities, shops, etc, and there have been billboards in these cities for years, they just displaying relevant in game things like 'ads' for popular 3rd party tools that work with AO. The only thing that's different is that now the billboards have real ads, if you have a free account. I don't feel that it breaks the game atmosphere.

To the uninformed reader, if you saw an article refering to "Hurd" (or Hurd/L4) and "GNU/Linux", how many people do you think would come to the conclusion that Hurd WAS a GNU project and Linux was NOT a GNU project?
