World of Warcraft Expansion News

I was waiting for more news on it before posting, so I imagine some of you are already aware of the screenshots and news of the first World of Warcraft expansion out there in the wild. Voodoo Extreme has the highlights, and Joystiq is carrying some beautiful screenshots. So far the three features that have my eyebrows raised are: Blood Elves as a new playable Horde race, a high level Flying Mount for the Outlands, and (most exciting) cross-server Battlegrounds. This last would be a huge boon for the currently questionable organized PvP play, and I really hope they swing it.

The "expansion notes" circulating the internets are just too unrealistic for any single expansion. Anyone with half a brain can see that.

    • Adding a new class, specifically for killing casters - they haven't even balanced the current classes yet, why add another to the mix?
    • 100 player instances with horde and alliance cooperating - puh-lease
    • level cap rise to 75 - don't make me laugh, can you say "31/31/4 builds"? That would totally destroy all class balance changes made in the last 9 patches.
    • why open Outlands, Northrend and the Emerald Dream all at once? They could all three be separate expansions, and way too much to add in one shot.

It's just a fans wet dream made true by others believing in it.

The screenshots showing actual 3D models I can believe, there may be Spellbreakers there (the guys with 2-pronged swords really are Blood Elf Spellbreakers, just do a google image search on it - they were in WC3:TFT)

Adding new races is somewhat plausible, as they don't mix up the delicate class balance too much. New instances are highly plausible also.

Northerend was not mentioned anywhere that I can see either. There isn't even a place for it on the current map.

And no, I don't think it's just fans wanting dreams to come true. Why wouldn't Blizzard add something that a majority of their fans keep asking for, keep wanting? They add it, they keep players playing.. They keep players playing and they keep making a profit, it's all win all around.

And yes, adding races is plausible. They could add a whole new faction other than Horde and Alliance too. Is it likely? Not at all, but plausible.

I think the real question, is why are Blood Elves mentioned as part of the Horde? They had previous ties to Alliance, why Horde now? They're more or less a Neutral race as it stands, so the shift to Horde is a little odd to me.. But I'm not complaining either. I want to see what Alliance gets first before I do that.

Their sustained DPS is also about equivalent, the shaman just has a greater ability to burst DPS. SoC roughly equals Windfury in terms of lottery-style kills.

In terms of racials, WotF is the hordes one innate reactive fear-countering ability. While the alliance gets dwarf priests with fear ward as a proactive ability. Humans have a pretty nice package of racials, perception is situationally useful, the spirit bonus is nice for priests, the rep bonus is great for anyone grinding rep to get crafting recipes, and the + to swords is ok. Gnomes are the ultimate mage class, and are tiny. Dwarves get reactive poison immunity, just need to remember to cancel it. Night Elves get an innate stealth. Orcs get stun/fear resist and + to axes. Trolls get crap. Tauren get an HP bonus and an AoE stun. Undead get the grand-daddy combo of WotF, underwater breathx3, and cannibalize(now that it's useful).

They were supposed to buff the other racials up to the level of WotF but instead decided to nerf it again(yes, it's old form was a nerfed form, it used to be passive) after tons of alliance whining. So if you think you're racials suck, you shouldn't have complained endlessly and instead gotten them buffed to be comparable, as was Blizzard's initial plan.

sorry, but this is just not true. Shamans are superior in every aspect except one: they can only wear mail. The bubble shield doesn't boost a paladins surviveability in a *meaningful* way because in the 12 seconds their life is prolonged they can't accomplish anything at all. So it boils down to bubbling up when you need to heal. A shaman can do that much more conviniend with natures swiftness, and on a shorter cooldown too. Shamans heals are vastly superior, as it takes the paladin one whole second longer to heal for the same amount. Schamans DPS is at least double that of the paladin. A schaman outdamages a pladin with WF alone and hasn't even used shocks and totems yet (good luck destroying that magma totem with melee ;). Even without considering the shamans mindbogglingly useful collection of utility spells (earthbind, earthshock (no heals against a schaman :-/ ), FS - slow, Self Rez, Waterwalking, Ghostwolf), paladins are a joke compared shamans. Is this the truth? Well, horde sure acts like it ... nobody ignores a schaman, to paladins it happens all the time.

It has been changed since this morning, which should give you an idea of how much stock to put in this sort of information.

The parents' points are insightful and correct especially with regard to raising the level cap. I think this is very unlikely, and all the blue posts on the topic on the WoW forums corroborate - everything in the game is balanced around 51 talent points in a very, very intricate way, and you CANNOT raise the level cap beyond 60 without rebalancing every class at once.
