  1. inaccuracy... on Music Meets Steganography · · Score: 5, Funny
Sorry boys and girls, you have to buy the CD if you want to see it, encoding of the song into a lossy format destroys the image.

The image is not destroyed -- it just morphs into an image of Jack Valenti.

You could say that it has already converged -- it has always been $2.56.

As his faq (http://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/faq.htm l) says, "$2.56 is one hexidecimal dollar". Delightfully odd, that Knuth guy. ;)

  4. small inaccuracy in article on Five Years of Quake · · Score: 2
    From the article:

Quake was the first network / on-line code that let you join in the middle of a game, players could come and go and the games would never end.

This is not the case -- back in my school days I remember playing Xpilot over the net at all hours of the day. You could join in anytime you wanted, send messages to teammates, customize the look of your ship, etc. There was even a worldwide ranking system. Xpilot has been around 10 years old now, and introduced (or at least expanded on) some pretty cool innovations.

Check out the story of Xpilot at http://www.acm.org/crossroads/xrds3-2/xpilot.html.

  5. Rental car companies can check driving records... on Rental Car + GPS = Speeding Ticket · · Score: 1
AirIQ is wonderful for protecting our assets, and if you don't like it, rent from some other company.

Fair enough, I won't. I have a good driving record and I don't steal stuff. (and I am not going to start with a Taurus that has a crappy stereo and smells like smoke...)

Rental car companies have done just fine without GPS/monitoring for a long time. I'm willing to present evidence that I can be trusted with a rental car. I'll sign a contract saying I won't do 6a-f above, and I'll take responsibility if I fail. Given all this, it is hard for me to trust a company that places so little trust in me.

  7. Contributing factors on 13-Year-Old Suspended For Hacking Commits Suicide · · Score: 2
First of all, my sympathies go out to Shinjan's family, friends, and everyone involved. This is a terrible tragedy.

I am hesitant to assess blame in situations like this. I am sure there will be posts here placing the blame on:
    • the school system for excessive punishment for a pretty minor offense (and a lack of sensitivity -- the principal's comments nonwithstanding)
    • Shinjan's parents for placing excessively high expectations on their son's shoulders,
    • Shinjan himself for making a terribly rash, irreversible, tragic decision,
    • our society for various evils.

Maybe all of the above played a part, who knows. It seems to me that Shinjan became a young kid who lost his sense of perspective about what is important in life. I don't expect 13 year old kids to have much perspective, but I would hope that every child has somebody in their life that would instill in them an *unconditional* sense of self worth.

The last sentence used to sound like pop psychology drivel to me, until a friend ended up in the same situation. Now I feel lucky because I don't take that kind of thing for granted anymore.

Don't you think thats a little extreme?

Nah, it's not as extreme as it sounds...if you look real close at all the secret doors there's a little dot in the middle of them.
