I'm surprised that an intelligent design didn't attack this part of the thread yet.
If they did, I would just refer them to this link: Is God an Accident? and direct them to pay special attention to section V, which is entitled "We've Evolved to be Creationists".
What's special about grasses is that grass grow from the bottom, while most if not all other plants have the grow-point at the tip. This means that grass will survive and trive with gracing. If you grace on any other plant you'll eat off the grow point. Grasses evolved because of extreme gracing pressure. The first plant that had its growing point at the root instead of at the tip got a tremendous advantage and the new species would spread around like, er, grass.
Mod parent up! This is exactly right, but you beat me to it. It makes perfect sense for grass to evolve under grazing pressure, and I don't see how large herds of grazers could exist for more than a very short while if it weren't for a resilient, bottom-growing plant like grass.
I've always wondered what the internal culture is in companies that leads them to launch suits like this, as they almost always backfire even if they are won. The McDonald's lawsuit against a couple of people distributing anti-McDonald's pamphlets, for example, certainly led to much more anti-McDonald's media coverage than a couple of nutty activists could ever have managed on their own.
Well, (according to the internet), among other things it's in the local paper, and I've just seen this story linked on the front page of Yahoo! Canada. (Its in the "In the News" box on the right side at the time of this writing)
I bet.... yup just checked... it's Farked, and it'll probably hit BoingBoing tomorrow.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it get picked up nationally in a day or two.
So yeah, I think Activa's about to find out exactly how quickly news like this can spread...
The marijuana using youth obviously decided that getting paid LESS for doing nothing was better than getting paid MORE to do whatever the task was.
isn't that motivation? Getting paid LESS to do nothing, MORE to do something?
Actually, it appears that the smartest thing to do would be to get paid less to do nothing, and then get a part-time job on the side. With two avenues of income, the net payoff would likely be higher.
Bah! Evolution! Actually, His Noodleyness is unhappy with us for denying Him and is working on our replacements. These are the future of 'Big Business'.
You, Sir, are on the right track! From the article:
Dr Elvin said. "It looks a bit [like] spaghetti [but] we can cast it in any shape."
I do believe that this is in fact a sign! I mean... Arrrrr.....
Dieing because one can not afford the medical treatment they need or becoming bankrupt after paying for it is no one's fault. It's bad luck.
Pardon me, but let's suggest that you are travelling (where - doesn't matter). You are robbed, and in the process your leg is broken, shards of bone protruding through your skin.
As you lie by the side of the road, a doctor comes by and starts to inspect you. As he begins to apply antispetic to the wound, you tell him you cannot pay.
"Ah" he says "Then this is bad luck" And he turns away, leaving you to die.
From the link: About half cited medical causes, which indicates that 1.9-2.2 million Americans (filers plus dependents) experienced medical bankruptcy. Among those whose illnesses led to bankruptcy, out-of-pocket costs averaged $11,854 since the start of illness
Yeah, that's waaaaaaay better. That took all of two seconds on google.
Which came out first? The N64 or the Playstation's analog controllers? It seems to me that the Playstation's controllers came out first (I know the original PS controllers didn't have the analog sticks), but I don't know.
I don't have the exact dates, but there is no question. It was Nintendo by a country mile. Sony's PS shipped without analog sticks, as did Sega's Saturn. They both put out analog controllers after Super Mario 64 proved what a huge advantage analog was.
P.S.S. If Google and/or Amazon isn't interested (yet), anyone else interested in forming a start-up?
Everyone is always interested in forming a startup. I'm interested, you're interested, half the people here are interested. If you're interested in keeping your idea, though, broadcasting it to a million programmers may not be the best way to go about it.
Do you really have the time to devote to it... or at least something, though? If so, I'm right here.
You're not the only one. I have, on at least two occassions, gone to a music store intending to buy a CD and then walking out without buying it because of a copy-protection warning label.
I am one person who will NEVER buy a CAD (Corrput Audio Disc)
I just want to know how a Windows swapfile vs linux swap partition bashing thread turned into abortion rights! -nB
You're right. This is BS. I've waded into these discussions (flamewars) before, and its always the the same. Everyone is too polarized to bother to ty to find a middle ground. Especially the ACs.
On another note, I don't feel like clicking through 20 pages, each containg a single paragraph, just to read the article. And there's no single-page option. Why hasn't someone posted this on a single page? Or maybe they have. I'm just lazy to look.
I did. My parents did. My wife's parents did. My brothers and sisters did. My aunts and uncles did. My cousin got raped, so that doesn't count. The kids in my college Christian club that were virgins before coming to Christ stayed that way. The "born again virgins" stayed that way also.
I hate to tell you this, but it is statistically likely that at least some of those people are lying.
Yes, you can describe Hawking radiation in terms of quantum tunneling. But you can also describe it in terms of virtual vacuum pair production, as in the link I gave above.
Are these both the same process described in two different ways, or are these processes two different contributors to the phenomenon of Hawking radiation?
Hawking radiation works because the particle/antiparticle that gets absorbed has negative energy, while the one that is radiated away has positive energy; the one that falls in acquires negative energy because it falls in.
I thought particles were able to tunnel out of a black hole as well (although "tunnel" may be the incorrect term). It was my understanding that as a black hole gets smaller, this causes the locations of the particles inside become more and more clearly defined, their velocity becomes less clearly defined, and so some particles are able to cross the event horizon.
>In your estimation, how close are we to the real thing?
I would say that we're at least ten years away, for at least the next fifty years.
I'm surprised that an intelligent design didn't attack this part of the thread yet.

Now that would really cause ballistics.

...They should give up, and start weighting user votes. For example: users who post stories that are often promoted
So in other words, they should just turn the whole operation over to AlbertPacino? (Judging from the podcast)

>Somebody needs to remind the current incumbent of the White House about his nation's history.
Nah, you'd get better results by buying him another bottle of whisky, and taking it up with the vice president.
I'm glad I get my music off of p2p networks and don't have to worry about trojans and rootkits and that evil hacker stuff!
Modded funny? If I have to put up with rootkits when I buy a CD, this might as well have been modded "Insightful".
>Indeed, I seem to get in trouble for PKing, though...
Touché
> It would be way more fun with PVP though.
It is PVP. All the time. Always.

Clearly, "universal" Canadian healthcare is nothing but a murderous, fraudulent, sham
Really? And the American system is better? What about an American system that forces people into bankruptcy, and where those who cannot pay are left to die?

I respectfully disagree with your premise. Human female breasts are NEVER uninteresting!
And you in that statement you thereby reinforce the thesis that they are a display characteristic! Excellent!
It's the same in New Zealand.
Only our chicks are much hotter.
What, you mean like Rosie?

They're the same process described in two different ways. Another paper.
Thanks. I'll get around to reading up on this eventually. (It's been too long since I last did).
