Those of us who watched that show already knew this day was coming, and some possible consequences. :-)

  2. Good book on Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution · · Score: 1

I read it too. It's a great way to get a historical perspective on our heritage. I would highly recommend it.

It's no worse than Merced... do you say "mer-sed" or pronounce it like the second syllable of "immersed"?

Hell yeah! Let's get it going.

  5. Re:How does the screen work? on IBM launching wearable PC · · Score: 1

With a lens of course. This has been a solved problem for a long time, in other HMDs.

However I would object to the virtual image being like a 14" monitor at "normal" distance. Since it's virtual anyway, why be so limited? It should be like an 80" screen several feet away. And I hope it's transparent, so you can see the scenery at the same time (transparent xterms with no extra programming effort, heh).

  6. It's a product now eh? on Barca Lounger for Geeks · · Score: 1

I've been going to build one of those for ages now (thought of the idea when I was about 12 or so). I always figured maybe I'd run into some dentist's chairs at an auction or something but never did, so I'm figuring on building one from scratch. I was going to start on it this weekend but my favorite place to scrounge for unusual metals (like the stainless steel pole I'll need) was closed for the holiday. But mine's going to have motorized height adjustments and movable elbow joints on those monitor/keyboard arms, and a bookrest for when I have to resort to dead-tree edition reading material due to lack of electronic versions.

Someday I want to build an active-suspension lounge too - one that measures your body weight distribution and actively tries to equalize it for maximum comfort. It will be built for two of course. :-)

  7. My setup, in progress on The PC and ahe Video Entertainment Center? · · Score: 1
I have an RGB video projector so I wanted to do something similar. I have the NTSC to RGB converter box for my projector (for watching TV and videotapes), and I have the Samsung 905 DVD player which has RGB out for directly driving the projector, and also the 6-channel analog audio outputs. So a computer isn't strictly necessary in my case but I want to be able to use the computer in lieu of a VCR or Tivo. I will insist on using Linux (that's why I had to get a separate DVD player rather than trying to use a DVD-ROM).

So I bought a Phoebe TV Master tuner board from Onsale. It uses the Bt878 chip, and with the Video for Linux drivers in Linux 2.2.10 I have succeeded in getting the tuner to work. However, the composite video and S-video inputs don't work, and I don't get any audio out of the card. The guys on the V4L mailing list have ignored my questions for the most part. For now I'm using the tuner card for the picture (it does make a smoother picture than the NTSC-to-RGB converter box did) and using my VCR to tune in the audio portion. I'm planning on finding a genuine Hauppauge tuner board (mine doesn't have the stereo audio decoder either and I consider that essential).

  8. Re:"Desktop Decoder" for AC-3? on The PC and ahe Video Entertainment Center? · · Score: 1

There is a $200ish Technics AC3 decoder. It's a normal width stereo component, about 2" tall, and has a cool display, remote, and you can adjust the 6 speaker levels independently. You can get it at Best Buy last I checked, probably many other places too.

  9. murphy on Scientists create flu virus entirely from genes · · Score: 1
Sure seems predictable to me that even if we can engineer a virus to cure cancer, the virus would continue to live in the person, get passed on to others, and eventually it would mutate and do something bad. I bet our viruses will not be as reliable as those found in nature, especially at first.

Still worth trying though. As the other guy said, once something is invented we can't just forget about it.

  10. Re:encoding the basic knowledge on The Emerging-Behavior Debate · · Score: 1

Fuzzy concepts are important if the AI is to learn from the web, because even if there is absolute truth, you sure as heck won't find it reliably there. It would have to weigh the truth of each statement according to how often it is made and according to how likely the author is to be correct based on previous experience with that author's material, just like we do.
