    Unix kinda doesn't make much sense

    Unix (including Linux) is as straightforward as the GUI. A properly configured (and scripted) GUI can land any user in any kind of environment they like. And the possibilities for enhanced user experience and value for time spent in front of the console is much greater running in an Unix OS, although integration and tweaking takes more time and effort.

    man, that was a pretty depressing followup to my comment. michael really has posted about this thing 4 times in the last two weeks. could we at least wait until it docks before we hear more, now, hmm. i really wonder if you mean all of that, to me you sound pretty depressed, thats for sure. look, it aint over until its over, right? so dont give up hope yet, friend. on the other hand perhaps my comment was out of place, but then on the third hand i could have argued successfully, i think, that this post could have carried the USA selection and/or possibly the geeks in space topic.

    Do we want that? Probably Wine is the only possible approach to a full port, but then the real "magic" of office is the integration the rest of the system and the DLLs.

    A limited port is probably preferable, more than the just the file formats, but less than VB-scriptable (so to speak). Desktop acceptance of Linux is the goal here. Not the full integration of Office with the system, but the ability to share the space.

    1. Dont run as root.
    2. Dont run suid
    3. Run Tripwire before installing, since theres no way you are gonna get to compile it yourself, and no way you're gonna get to untar the binary distributions.
    4. chroot(1) if you feel really paranoid.

    I think this would be a good thing, since I could leave MS (the operating system) forever, and at the same time, it would be a fairly humbling punishment for MS, forcing Linux into their own shop, and forcing them to devote resources to it.

    In Sweden we often poke fun at the Norwegians

    As a guest of the norwegians, I find it amusing that they were given the hardest, rockiest land in all of Sweden as their own, only to become the some of the most valuable land on earth, because of the oil, gas, fish, and other wealth just off the shoreline.

    It's lots of fun tho, the tit-for-tat between them and you. I saw a widely circulated map the other day which shows scandanavia without sweden. Very popular here.

    Closest thing to it in the States that I can think of is the ongoing rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas. (although there is probably more physical violence in that one, heh.)

    Even the typical cleanout is still a good distance from the house. How many payments of 40/mo will it take to cover the cost of a single installation? Not to mention the implicit cost of a J-box, either in the sewer main (as you mention), or in series at the panel, in which case two leads have to be pulled in.

    I still think it's a ploy to get access through residential zones.

    Includes the last 75 feet. The robot in the sewer makes it sound good, but I dont believe they can make this work without trenching and traffic.

    Instead, I think they mean to run optical cable through a neighborhood, but not actually to the neighborhood. That's where the money will be, getting cable from one industrial/commercial zone to another without having to go out to the mains every time.
