  1. Piece of Paper on Questions Regarding the ECDL? · · Score: 1

Essentially it's a case of 'yep I know how to work MS Office and can switch on and use the computer, organise my files and get work done without destroying it.

Most technical types could do it blindfolded. I did the exams along with everyone else in our building but didn't do any of the training or revision.
It can be useful in getting everyone in an organisation 'up to speed' making sure everyone has at least basic competence. I hear quite a number of schools are planning on sending their teachers through it.

  2. feedback on Good Job Experiences? · · Score: 1

I did a stint helping with basic IT classes for a project working with adults recovering from mental illness. I hadn't done anything teaching-like before and I expected it to be horrendously frustrating. Instead I really enjoyed it. Best moment - when on my birthday one of the students gave me a card they made on the computer. Three weeks ago she didn't know how to switch the thing on and there was a wonderful sense of 'I did that'.

It's going to be interesting if this both this case and the EU decision to ban chipped cartidges suceed.

Are Lexmark going to start selling both US and EU versions of their products?

Seems like having to produce two versions of everything and trying to stop people importing the 'wrong' versison for their area is going to work out to a lot more money than the amount lost to a few copycat cartridge makers.

    The Lexmark warranty mentions that...

Service does not include repair of failures caused by: misuse, neglect, accident, modification, operation outside the specified operating environment, improper maintenance by the Customer , failure caused by service of the printer by non-authorized servicers, or failure caused by a product, including supply products, for which Lexmark is not responsible.

    (My italics)

So if they decided that a copycat cartridge stuffed up your printer they may try to wriggle out of fixing it.
  6. Re:In my school on IT Worker-to-User Ratio Survey? · · Score: 1

I'm a IT tech in primary schools (That's 4-11 year-olds for people not this side of the Pond)

Different school each day of the week, about 20 computers at each. It seems to work more or less okay. Before I started their tended to be one teacher per school who was more techy than the rest and ended up having to chase around between/during lessons fixing other people's problems instead of teaching.

Lack of technical support in primary schools is a common problem here though.

  7. Re:cameras everywhere on Record the Surveillance Cams · · Score: 3, Interesting

I like the idea but rather suspect the Powers that Be would be not happy with people photographing cameras.

Out of interest I totted up how many I passed on my walking route to work this week. It was 23.

I live in Swansea,a not particuarly large city in Wales. I live near the city centre and work on the outskirts which probably affects the number of cameras I pass. I also pass the police station en route which definately bumps up the figures.

9 of those were at traffic lights and petrol stations.
    4 on or in shops.
    2 on houses.
    2 on the police station.
4 on the side of a particuarly paranoid chinese takeaway.
    1 at the railway station.
1 (which bothered me) on the side of a school, watching the playground.

And then I arrived at work and was promptly checked out on the cameras before I was let in.(I'm a technician in primary schools)

  8. EUCD Implementation on Death Of The Global Information Infrastructure · · Score: 2, Informative
The European Union has passed a resolution for all its member states to implement DMCA-like copyright laws by the end of this year.
Actually the implementation has been delayed in the UK because of the volume of responses to the consultation paper . Their target is now next March.

Hopefully they're using the time to seriously consider the concerns raised and will actually come up with a vaguely reasonable implementation. Well, we can hope.

I'm in the UK and can't say it's really affected my day to day life. The extra security precautions at airports I've heard about don't really suprise me. In fact the last time I was over in the US (before Sept11) I was more suprised by the total lack of any serious security on internal flights. (Well that and the 'Are you or have you ever been involved in terrorism' tick-box on the visa form - do they really catch any incredibly stupid terrorists that way?) I do however have new awe for the ability of certain segments of the American population to turn anything into a marketing opportunity.
