Heh, thanks for the advice but at night is when I am active- in the day is when I cron things for. Unfortunately there is already a hell of a lot of things maxing out every cpu I have: divx encoding, curing cancer, searching for MD4 hash collisions and world domination.
Here in the UK our universities have been a bunch of evil sell-outs for ages. We always joked that our university was really a conference park that took students in when it wasn't conference season. We joked, but the conference guests got better amenities in the university accomodation than the students did.
Also there was a lot of courses in compsci where you'd just think "Why the hell is this course in here ?" An example was on the MSc in Information Technology (basically a 1 year conversion course for people new to IT) where they had a course on inductive logic programming. This was way ahead of anything else the students were taught (data structures, basic pascal programming etc). The real reason was that the inductive logic dude was a former Oxford lecturer who came with attractive grant prospects.
It's all about making money and not teaching students. Universities are businesses. They have only a little more integrity than those spammers who offer to sell you a degree over the internet!
Also look at the fact that final degree marks have changed. In my parents' time it was incredibly difficult to get a 1st class degree, you had to work really hard to get a 2.1 etc. Now they basically split it like:
bottom 10% = Do no work at all- go to no lectures: pass general , fail or 3rd class (randomly decided)
middle 80% = 2.2 or 2.1- either did work or was intelligent but did no work.

Would this be the secret meeting of the people's front of Linux, where they say things like:

And before you mod this as flamebait let me say I really hate Microsoft.
Does anyone know if there is any mp3 player, either a cd player that plays cdrs or a dedicated model with hard-drive or flash that plays, or can be firmware-flashed to play.flacs ?
It's not really that I am an "lossless is best" fascist, but I have the majority of my music in flac, and converting it to mp3 every time to fill up the player would be a big waste of time...

I fully expect a European patent examiner to know about famous cases of patents and their "infringement" whether in the US or wherever.
He's bound to have views, and perhaps information that we don't know, e.g. "This couldn't happen in Europe because all our patents have to be approved by body XXX who traditionally reject anything that XXXXXX....." (or whatever, you get the idea).
What is being done to stop the abuses of the patent system we see in the US ? (I'm particularly thinking of the recent so-called "JPEG" fiasco).
Or perhaps you do not view them as unreasonable, but I myself see this kind of patenting of existing things plus litigating against large corporations as an ethically bankrupt "revenue stream".

I am familiar with the site in question. It is nowhere near as comprehensive as the story suggests. They seem to have all the 1st edition and earlier stuff but hardly any 2nd edition and no 3rd edition.
This is, I think because it's mainly a site for collectors, and 2nd edition stuff doesn't fetch as high a price as 1st edition stuff. (Although I have seen a lot of 2nd edition stuff fetch lots more than some 1st edition stuff).
Details of modules etc are confined to differences between printings, rarity, etc.
This is definately a site for collectors, not players, and people wanting a stroll down memory lane (complete with random encounters) should look elsewhere.
I use flac (lossless compression). What was the problem again ?;)
Seriously, the reason I use flac, even though it takes up a shit load of space is that in the future, inevitably we will have more space to store everything. When we do, thousands will be cursing their crappy mp3s that they ripped at 128 to save space.
Of course, ahem, if you kept your original CDs to rip from then you can just re-rip them to flac or another lossless compression then, but still, why do it all twice ?
Grrr- I had a really great uptime on my main FreeBSD workstation then I had to emergency shutdown -h now it when the alarm decided to go off on it because the cpu was overheating. (30 degrees C in my computer room in the middle of the night with 17" room fan on.
I did at first just rip the case open and whip off the speaker connector on the motherboard but it seems there must be a special speaker on the motherboard itself.
I had to act quick because it was making an awful din and I didn't want next door to come round complaining. After all my computer room is right next to their bedroom, and it WAS 3AM...
