At most, its a nifty band-aid (like those kind that glow-in-the-dark). If it gets released, the mutant of a controller will find many good homes that love it, so long as it's not anywhere devoid of lap space.
But does it::really:: solve anything? All a person wants when they're gaming is seemless manifestation of their intent. You could wire an OS to follow your eyes focus and have it select operations with coded-blinking, and we'd like it, so long as it did what it we intended. But if I told someone to move their butt around to scroll a page down, I'd be crazy. So that stuck using a mouse and keyboard to play games is beyond reason to me. I move my whole arm to get a little pointer to go where I already know about. I don't even need to show anyone (besides the computer)! So.... why not simply point with my finger?
There's too much "around-the-bush" with these tools. For instance, I describe sounds that I make using a combination of a few dozen keys (keys that are modeled after a printing press that *couldn't* have dynamic functions). Yet the words I emit are really just part of a small set of sounds (octaves) uttered next to other sounds thatare divided by moments of space and vary in amplitutde. I'm no genius, but it seems these input devices over reach our intent - the communication between objects and people (and sometime people who are objects! Ha!).
So lets innovate new controllers. Anyone have any good ideas?
No...I think they might have bought the rights. From what I know, another company besides Nintendo developed Pokemon. But since Nintendo helped finance it, esp. in it's infancy, they got the scoop.
Yeah. It totally looks like some cheap hack. Not really all that well thought out. Text in gaming is a hard topic to tackle. That controller, its the mutant child of desktop and console gaming.
Going totally like a keyboard setup doesn't really appeal to console gaming. Arn't most games played on the floor? Imagine trying to type with your wrists at a 60 degree angle, and if your like most kids, looking at the keys, and then jerking your head back and forth from the TV. No thanks. But the top-dwon is better than what we see from Ascii, as I can still run like hell with the flag and tell a team member to cap my shadow.
I've been waiting and waiting for someone to market this. It'd make chat in FPS sooo great. There are obvious hurdles to overcome, but it could add another layer to skinning, ala Worms, where each player had thier own voice style. Although I can only imagine bad Stephen Hawking impressions at the moment, but anything can get better. But hey, who doesn't want to be a Pimpbot 2000?
Plus, I could::really:: make those cell phone calls private;)
Actually, I believe the reason why Sega is not linking DC's version with Gamecubes is because of the cheating. Don't know if they've come up with better safegaurds this time around tho.
On a related topic, Sony is planning on making all it's online games PSX exclusive, despite Square's (and it's investors)interest to port "Final Fantasy XI Online" to all systems with total interconectedness.
You might like to know about Panasonics limited edition portable ruggable (try saying that 5X fast!). Its just as fast but is limited to 32mb RAM. However, it has a color LCD screen; a qwerty keyboard; touch screen; and an SD card to boot. I don't know if there's a headphone out or a size limit on the SD card, but its meant for use in the rain, plus its upgradable to GPS, if your in to that sort of thing. Price? $999
There is a catch tho. It runs Win CE 3.0 and a minimum 500 unit order. Looks cool tho.

Wow, that would seriously throw a wrench in Nintendo's plans. Esp. with the Metal Gear Solid 2 release.

Yeah its gonna be a bitch to hack. But at least you could feasably play cute little half-sized mp3 discs!
A cookie goes to anyone who hacks it into a Dvorak!
