XBox Delayed

rumrum writes: "From CNet: 'The company says it will delay the launch of its video game console by one week to Nov. 15 but declines to clarify exactly how many units it will have available at launch.'" AP has a slightly more informative article which points to production problems, and the LA Times has a story noting that production hasn't yet begun.

In all fairness, this is partly Nintendo's fault. Nintendo has held firm with the belief that hyping up a system too far ahead of launch is bad for the industry (hurts sales of current systems, which is bad for everyone because gamers just waiting for new systems are not playing current games) and generally a waste of time. Too much hype can easily turn out to be a bad thing. Look at E3, MS had spent months hyping the X-Box, and every gaming writer who attended the show said they came away disappointed. Nintendo said very little about the Cube before the show and blew everyone away. Who knows, maybe the same will hold true with the launch.

Nintendo will be marketing the Gamecube actively, but they've said on several occasions that they won't start until 6-8 weeks before launch. You'll probably start hearing a bit more about the Cube in October. I'd provide links, but most of my news comes from cube.ign.com and I'm having trouble reaching their site now.

Microsoft throws a shiny ball in front of us and we're supposed to forget everything they've done? The worst part is that buying this just to hack around is still bad because it contributes to the number of console sales, which third party developers will use to decide which console to make games for. So maybe Namco decides to throw a few more exclusives at the X-Box and that leads to more people buying it because they want those games. Next thing you know, the X-Box is to the living room as Windows is to the desktop, and I have to pay Bill a dollar a minute to play video games.

      • Motherboard - $45 for a P3, $44 for an Athlon (Pricewatch)
      • 1GHz P3 - $164 (see Sharky Extreme's Weekly CPU price list). Alternatively, an athlon 1GHz -- $74. Also, note that I'm using a higher speed CPU here, because with a PC you don't get the benefit of allowing the programmers to write directly to the hardware, so you need a bit more raw speed to compensate.
      • Sound Card - $150 Hercules Game Theater XP (or, you could go ~$100 for an SB Live!). Obviously, since nVidia designed the audio chipset for the XBox, you won't be able to get the exact same audio hardware (well, maybe not until nForce-based motherboards are released).
      • Video - $260 (the aforementioned GeForce 3). No other video card is worth mentioning, if you're strict about wanting near-XBox-level performance.
      • Gamepad - $35 Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad Pro (about as close as you'll get to an XBox game pad)
      • Hard Drive - $75 40GB hard drive (because you have to install an OS, install games, keep saved games, and so on) (again, from Pricewatch)
      • DVD-ROM - $27 10X drive (Pricewatch)
      • Necessary accessories (mouse, keyboard) - $4 (if you're really cheap -- again, Pricewatch)
      • Case - $11 generic case (Pricewatch)
      • Memory - $30 (price for PC133 512MB, since more memory is always better when developers don't have the ability to micromanage the memory how they please). (Pricewatch)

That comes to a total of $801 (before S/H and tax) for a P3 system, or $710 for an AMD system. Both of those prices are more than twice the price of an XBox. Also note that I didn't take into account any software costs (I don't know what the expected OEM cost for XP Home is).

I just put a 700Mhz box together for my mom for $280.

The likelihood of that machine being a true "gaming machine" is highly suspect. First off, I'd bet that your so-called "GeForce2" is really the MX version, which is neutered (half the rendering pipelines makes for roughly half the speed). A GeForce2 MX can't hold a candle to a GeForce3, nor will it be able to stand up to the XBox. Second, what kind of sound hardware is in that system? It's highly unlikely you're going to get hardware accelerated 3D-sound in Dolby Digital 5.1 from whatever budget sound chipset is in there. Third, see the above comment about CPU speeds. On top of that, it's likely that 700MHz CPU is a duron or celeron, which while being nice and cheap, are not quite the caliber of a P3 or Thunderbird. I could go on, but I realize that you probably never expected that machine to be used for gaming anyway (nothing more than solitaire or freecell).

The next chipset nVidia will release will likely be the GF3 Ultra. Don't expect the GF3 to drop too much (probably no more than $50) with this refresh. Maybe a year down the line, with the theoretical GF4, will you see the GF3 drop to the $150 or less mark (let me qualify this by saying that I'm not referring to any MX cards, as I don't consider them to be useful for gaming). What this means is that even six months from now, expect to spend $200 or more on a GF3.

The X-Box will not be able to drop in price much though, because they will need to continue using the same parts even after the rest of the industry moves on.

First, you need to understand how console manufacturing works. As the factories ramp up, and increase their effectiveness, the price of manufacturing decreases. This is why, as you mentioned, the PS2 will be getting cheaper -- manufacturing becomes more efficient as it progresses. The same scale will hold for the XBox. If Microsoft is able to charge $299 at launch, while the PS2 was $399 at launch and has just recently (past few months) hit $299, why wouldn't Microsoft be able to keep up in the price war with Sony?

As time goes on the X-Box is going to get more expensive to produce, and good PCs and PS2s are going to get cheaper.

By bringing the PS2 into the equation, your argument just backfired. Comparatively, yes, the XBox will probably appear to be more expensive to produce than a PC as time goes on (well, until you reach the point where building a comparable PC is more expensive due to scarcity of parts), but the XBox is a console, just as the PS2 is a console. They both use some proprietary parts (the PS2 more than the XBox), and they both use some commodity parts (the XBox more than the PS2). However, as I mentioned before, manufacturing trends tend towards a reduction of cost as volume and efficiency increases. There's no reason to expect that to be any different for the XBox than for the PS2. And to address your point about Intel discontinuing production of the P3 chipset, I'm sure Microsoft and Intel have anticipated this, and being long-time partners, have likely worked out a mutually beneficial deal wherein Microsoft will continue to get P3 chipsets for a decent price and Intel will continue to get Microsoft's business. Or something. (Let me qualify this by saying I have no clue what kind of arrangement they have, if any, so I'm not speaking with any type of authority here)

What it boils down to is that the XBox is a console, not a PC, and so standard console trends will most likely apply (I say "most likely" only because the XBox is not released yet, and thus I have no hard data to back this up). That is, hardware prices will continue to drop while games will continue to push the limits of the hardware more and more, doing things you'd never expect to see on that piece of hardware (for example, compare Final Fantasy IX to Final Fantasy VII on the PSOne). The first generation XBox titles may be something you'd possibly see on high-end PCs today, or mid-range PCs in a year. But given 2-3 years of development experience, and XBox titles will probably still be pushing what a high-end PC can do at that point in time, with lower hardware specs, because those specs are constant and the developers can leverage the knowledge they've gained from their past several games.

Intel and Microsoft are close partners. Therefore, would it not make sense for Intel to license the P3 design to nVidia for the purposes of fabricating chips for the XBox? Hell, they could integrate the design directly into the motherboard, rather than using the standard socket or slot connection. Historically, nVidia works like so: Release a chipset, six months later release a new driver set that increases performance, three to six months after that release a "Ultra" refresh of the last chipset (and lately, release the neutered MX, the Quadro version, and the GO version for laptops) and/or another driver set with increased performance, roughly six months later release a brand new chipset. Right now, we're at the point in the cycle where the first updated drivers have been released since the GeForce3. That means that in 3-6 months (let's say 4.5 months, for the sake of argument), we'll see the GF3 Ultra, MX, Go, and Quadro. Then, six to nine months later, we'll see the theoretical GeForce 4 (or whatever they call it). That means, a minimum of 9 months (though probably averaging closer to a year) from now before we see the GF4, with the potential to be as much as 15 months out, or even more. Of course, I'm just going by nVidia's recent history, so I could easily be wrong.

The release schedule will be different this time because Geforce 3 does not represent Nvidia's state of the art at the time of it's release. We already know that they have better stuff because it's in the XBox. I'm sure the only reason that Geforce3 isn't as good as XBox is because of contractual obligations to MS. Once the limits on that contract expire, they'll let out the good stuff. I would be surprised if Nvidia would have accepted a contract that made them wait more then 6 months.

Rambus (Probably) won't stop manufacturing RAM. If anyhing changes it will be the size available. Sony can just put the bigger chips in when the current sizes are obsolete and just not connect the new significant address lines. Intel already anounced that it's canning the P3. IBM allows anyone to license their PPC core. It's even advertized on their website. Now that Nintendo has a PPC core license, it can manufacture PPC based CPUs (with the specific core they licensed) until the cows come home using any fab they wish. Intel does *not* license their P3 core. No one can manufacture Intel processors but Intel, so when they say no more then there will be no more. Now that MS is locked into haveing SSE support, Intel knows that they can pressure MS into switching to P4 without worry that MS will go AMD on them. You're going to see one of two things happen. Microsoft's costs on the P3 will go through the roof, or version 2 of the Xbox will have a P4 in it and will come out just after christmas. IBM most certainly does business much differently then Intel.

By tomorrow I mean 6-9 months from now.

The XBox is a PC with a different memory map and no IBM PC compatable BIOS. As far as I've seen the only thing the XBox *doesn't* have in common with a PC is the BIOS. I'm not sure wether they included the video framebuffer in the CPU's virtual address space or not, but if they did it wouldn't be that big of deal because many architectures have allowed large chunks of device memory to be maped in the CPU region before. Of course it doesn't have a comodity motherboard. You think a different PCB layout changes things much? Have you ever written low level software? I bet once the memory map is figured out and someone finds a way to load software off a non-official MS DVD someone will have linux running on this thing in days. In fact, if I had that information, I'd bet I could do it in two or three days. Microsoft will tell you it's *not* a PC all day, but in reality it's a PC with no BIOS. All that means is that it can't run the Win9x series of operating systems. I hope that XBox has an influence on future PCs, because the XBox is more of what I'd like to see todays workstations be then the hacks that they are in order to support legacy crap.

They've ALWAYS announced products before they were even started in order to get people to hold off buying the competitor's products. "Oh, but microsoft is coming out with a product very soon that will be better than your product". Then 'very soon' turns into delays and more delays mixed with more hype as they actually start to desgin the product. And people are still holding off buying the competitor's product. Eventually microsoft's product is finally released (with many bugs) and everyone is SO HAPPY to buy their long awaited thing. In the meantime, the competition has suffered. Sometimes the competition suffers enough to be bought up by microsoft for dirt cheap.

Ever hear about 'Microsoft for Cable TV?'
They failed at that - spent huge money on it, didn't even get a product out the door. Then they bought WebTV instead for cheap.

If you play zelda games for the graphics, you're a lost cause anyway ;). The best ones were the gameboy ones, and I was underwhelmed by Majora's Mask because it was essentially the same game as Ocarina of Time. It's all about new, innovative styles of play, not who has the biggest, er, fastest 3d graphics.

It's $30 for the official RAM expansion

When I saw them at that price, they were on sale. I was assuming that players aren't waiting for a sale.

forget about the $50 for a Game Boy Camera because that option got taken out at the last minute.

    Noted in my E2 writeup.

Oh, and I believe everyone has a TV.

Four-player Goldeneye or PD on the 13" TV a typical college student buys is not very fun. Note that I said "big enough to hold a four-player view," which implies at least 25 inches, preferably 31.

Actually, if you can get the Transfer Pak alone for $20

As I said in my previous post, not in any store I've seen, and shipping is a bitch.

However, I forgot to mention that there are "NP Exclusive" codes printed in the pages of Nintendo Power, so add $100 for back issues.

    the total is really $270

$270 only covers N64 ($100), the expansion pak ($30), PD64 ($50), and the controllers ($90). It does not cover the GBC, PD/GBC, Transfer Pak, and NP back issues needed to unlock all cheats. Heck, I didn't even mention Rumble Paks, but I didn't include those, as I assume nothing in the game absolutely requires vibration feedback (as it would in a fishing game).

[canceling the Game Boy Camera] should be $150 off the total.

No, $50 off, as you only needed one camera.

how much do you have to spend to "enjoy fully" Quake 3 Arena? $650 ($800 after monitor) in hardware doesn't go oh-so-far in terms of games

A Celery 500 with a TNT2 runs Q3A just fine (I've tried), and so does the free laptop that many colleges are giving out to students. (Rare markets M-rated Perfect Dark primarily to college students.)

if I wanted to play with an actual friend, it seems fair to say that I would have to note the purchase of multiple copies of the game.

Three more Q3A licenses cost $30. If you just want to play against other players who aren't as predictable as bots, you can play across the Internet; however, that can cost $200,000.

And that's assuming you don't "need" any fancy controllers to "enjoy it fully."

Any computer with a keyboard and an optical mouse should work.

By the way, I apologize for the tone of my previous post.

Apology accepted, but note that your signature, when taken in context, made your tone sound even worse.

The Xbox looks great on paper, but one look at it in real life shows it for what it is-- basically a badly executed PoS. This is why it lost so much steam at E3. When you actually play it, you see why... the controller is monumentally stupid, the games themselves feel mushy and are generally uninteresting (the Xbox Halo looked _worse_ than the late lamented OpenGL version of Halo showcased how many years ago). The box design is reminiscent of a $29 VCR. Of course, worst of all, most people don't care at all. Remember that the Xbox was supposed to try to appeal to hardcore gamers... ask them what they think of it, though, and most of them will go "enh."
