Pittsburgh is already like this. Its been like this for a little while i think. I just moved here about a year ago and it was definately hard to get used to. "You mean I have to dial the area code to call you even though your two streets over" Yeah it definately sucks.
This is waaay off topic, but just so you know. You do not have to give blockbuster your social security number. They ask for it but you don't have to give it to them and they will still give you a card. I know because I asked. A lot of places are like this, they may ask for ss# but your not required to give it to them
Ok, while this is cool, I think it's a bit blown out of proportion. Anyone who is actually playing music in the eletronic scene, and I don't mean dance music, i mean expirimental type stuff would realize this. Especially if you've ever used Metasynth. It's an amazing piece of software. I'd imagine more liekly than purposeuly putting the image in the song. He took the image in metasynth and got the sound from it and thought hey this sounds good Ill use it. Anyway that's just my opinion.
I have a developer model of the Yopy and let me just say it rocks even for a dev model. And the company seems like its got a real cool philosphy of open source behind it and so far has been real supportive to the yopy developers. But seriosuly i think when this thing actually comes out if they can keep the prices down they will be nice little machines for a variety of purposes. just my 2 cents though
I dont know. I seem to see a lot of people here at slashdot like hooray for suse now I can finnally try out linux on some ppc machine, but I dont understand. I mean Ive used SuSE before, hey its cool. Ive used Redhat before, Ive used Debian before. Yeah they're all a little different, but they all are pretty much the same stuff besides differnt package handling. I dont know. I guess all Im saying is, i think its good that SuSE is getting out their ppc version cause options are a great thing. But people are copmplaingn like hey maybe now we'll get better support. I don't know about the other ppc linux people out there, but I use linuxppc, and its got pretty damn good support. I got tv cards and sound cards and ide controllers and ll sorts of things stufffed into my 8500 powerpc and all of them work and rock. And these linuxppc guys are damn hard workers. No linux doesnt run without a hitch on newer apple machines, but progress has been made so quick to suport them you should be congradulating the devolopers for such good work. The fact is no ppc distro is going to support bleeding edge apple machines perfectly right away because Apple isnt exactly always friendly about giving out info. And yeah I know, "oh but most new macs have standard ide and this and that" yeah but you know what theres stil all sorts of custom apple chips inside those bad boys and thats exactly what apple doesnt release info on and it makes it a pain. Alright thats it, just wanted to respond to a bunch of stuff here

Im sure this isnt exactly what you meant. But you can pick up plenty of cheap apple machines, ranging from older 68k machines to pretty darn good ealrier ppc machines that run linux great. Ive been running linuxppc since r2 on my 8500 and its always been great. And I just installed debian on a Quadra I picked up for a 100 dollars on ebay and it works pretty good so far too. I mean I dont know, Im more of an old hardware freak so maybe Im biased. But just a suggestion.
The windows port is pretty much like the linux version. I must admit I love that theres a windows verison because after spending so much time in gimp and then trying to go and use photoshop I have to readapt ause IM use to all my little tricks in the gimp so its nice to have a awsome cross platform program
It is sorta open enough for linux hackers to use it, but only because damn there are some determined hackers that want linux on Apple machines. It would be a lot nicer with some more information, let me tell you. Especailly with Apple's older hardware. One of the biggest problems the linux-m68k project faces with Apple machines is there is virtuallly no documentation or info on some of the stuff inside the computer.
Apple is indeed using PCI and USB and such now, the problems arise with the motherboards for Apple machines. Often now like in the past apple makes their own fnacy chips and controllers for things, used to be like their scsi chips, and such. Sound chips is one thing that I wish apple would have documented. Now a days I dont think there's tons of stuff, But I'd bet that there is still enough custom made parts on apple motherboards and Apple doesnt want to tell.
I personally attend Indiana University and fully support the banning of Napster and all these people that are complaing about censorship this and what about our technology fees that need to get their heads out of their ass and realize they don't have the right to complain. I cant speak for other UNviersities but ehre at IU we have an agreement of fair use that everyone agrees to when they are given acess to the network. Obviously people dont read over it, but I have, basically it boils down to that the UNiversity owns the entwork and you get to use it as long as its for educational purposes. Obviously they cant block or police everything and make sure its only being used for educational purposes, but none the less, if they decided they didn't want to provide access to the world wide web at all, they could do that, its their choice. Its not censorship, Its their network and you agree to their terms. Now everyone goes well what about these 100 dollar student technology fees I pay? Well in addition to be an extremely computer literate student, I also work inside IUTS which is a major player in teh IU network. Your student technology fees, go towards, buying new computers, keeping the computer labs working nice, keep the main servers up, they do NOT pay for bandwidth, and seeing as napster was tkaing up over 70 percent of the bandwidth here, they have every right to block it, its not educational use, and its abusing the network, their is no hidden agenda against mp3's its puerly an issue with resources, and your techonology fee never gives you the right to abuse the privelage to abuse something you are let to use. Its not your right to view web pages, your lucky that the university gives the right and should be thankful. If you dont want censorship then find an ISP that doesnt care what you do and go with them. I just want all these people to stop complainng and wake up and realize they are complaing about rights being taken away and they arent rights they're privelages.
I dont, i was pretty excited a long time ago when there was first talk of the movie, but after seeing the trailer, Im not going to lie, it doesnt look to impressive. Maybe it would be a good rental, or cheap miovie theatre. BUt it defintly doesnt look 7 dollars good. Im sure Patrick Stewart is awsome as Prof. X but The rest of the movie didnt look to appealing. Everything is dark and gloomy, and yeah maybe that sticks to the trends of the day, but Doesnt fit well with X-Men. Also after reading this list of characters someone post, why is Rouge a character? She didnt come on in X-men for a long while, and if they're going to have Wolverine and Storm, wheres colusus. I dont know. Im not going to hold my breathe on this one, but thats just my opinion.
I don't think that MS is giving away their software for free, but here at my college (IU) We were one of the schools that struck those big deals with MS, which sorta sucks cause all the computers run buggy Office 2000, but we get the whole Visual Studio for like 25 bucks or something and I know in a class Im in now, we can get J++ Visual Studio for free, so MS is doing some stuff, personnally I live in UNIX and like jdk and gcc and everytthing else, but free and cheap compilers are defintly the way to go about getting people interested in programming, I had to save up for like a year to afford a student copy of metroworks compiler when i started leanring about programming in mac, but it was worth every cent, the whole reason I got into linux was the free tools.
I think your missing the point. I dont think that the Blackdown team was mad that Sun was using their work, they were upset that they recieved no credit for their efforts.
hah, thats a great idea, except, the fellow was asking how to remebr his passwords. If they're on a floppy disk, and you forogt your password and cant log into your computer, how can you get at your apsswords =)
I think this is a very good idea. Starting out with a programming language like java or c++ is kinda hard to just jump into for beggineres. I personally haven't used python, but ive used perl Which i gather is in someway simliar. And its a nice easy langauge. In addition, i know here at the university Im at the beggingi CS class is taught in scheme for the exact same reason they propose to use python, so it works and its a god idea, but thats just my 2 cents.
What about the recent IBM release of powerpc motherboard design, this could open up a whole new can of worms for people. Linuxppc on a cheap motherboard, you could build your own powerpc machine like people do with x86's. ANd of course i would imagine there might still be a few people wanting to use MacOS? I dont know personally i dont like macos, but i do music on my computer and seeing as recording doesnt even work yet in linuxppc i still have to boot into MacOS every now and again.
Does anyone not realize that MacOS does still exist? I perosnnally use a mac running Linux. The main reason i got into linux was programming and open source something which isn't very accessible in MacOS. I didnt see a lot of Open Source projects for MacOS and not a lot of source code released. I think there should be some sort of open source alternative for MacOS. Also i think a lot of this might change when MacOS X comes out, but who knows. (Sheesh there isnt even a free compiler for MacOS, and Codewarrior aint cheap.)
What worries me the most about this whole thing is the fact that the Government is trying to impliment this whole thing to have better security in the Government, but in actual practiceit seems like one huge invasion of privacy. I would think that if their security was so bad they had to monitor other people they have a lot more to worry about.
