Well if your emufreak friends aren't satisfied with ~200MB with 500MB to spare for ROMs, why not made a 4.5 gig DVD instead? ;)

A kind soul at PlanetMirror is now hosting KnoppiXMAME 1.0. I'll be updating the freshmeat page today.

Here's where you can grab the files:

    Share and Enjoy!

The source code is my modifications to Klaus Knopper's shell scripts. Most notably knoppix-autoconfig and xsession. I also did some configuration hacks to let the user choose between Xv and DGA on the boot command-line. You can uncompress the CD and extract all the scripts from within a running KnoppiXMAME. shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Hi everyone, I'm the author of KnoppiXMAME. The file wasn't available yet on ibiblio when I updated the project status on freshmeat. I didn't think it would generate an announcement on the main page, and I certainly didn't think it would be slashdotted!

I've mailed the ibiblio maintainers and am waiting for a response on the status of the ISO file I uploaded about three days ago. In the meantime you can grab the ISO directly from me by opening an ftp session to yummy.dyndns.org. It's only 128K up, so whoever gets it first please put some mirrors up!

If he simply would have observed the behaviour of the program and tried to re-create it, that would have been a more moral type of reverse-engineering. Looking at code and then re-writing it in another language is not reverse engineering in my opinion.

I disagree. The real original thing about Knoppix is it's automatic hardware configuration, which is a hell of a lot more of an issue on the x86 platform than the ppc one. It's what makes it ideal for gaming. Far as I know, gentoo only supports ATI and NVidia cards.

There already is a Debian for PPC. Knoppix is really just Debian if you aren't using it as a live CD.

I think the gentoo guys are raising the bar by adding live CDs for a new architecture, while allowing access to the native OS at the same time.

I don't see why not. From my limited understanding of Apple/NeXT, OS X runs on top of BSD, which runs on top of the Mach microkernel. Far as I know, Mach was designed with the idea of running multiple operating systems at the same time in mind. I am pretty sure it's what makes "Classic Mode" OS 9 available at the same time as OS X.

If someone knows more about this, please elucidate. A "kernel for kernels" was always a cooler idea to me in comparison to virtualization of resources for an OS which already runs on the same hardware.

BTW, this is only true for Windows >= XP. I actually own Windows 2000, but have it installed on about three computers at home. So even though they run in VMware, I technically still do run Windows.

Not only does this protocol disperse the slashdot effect, it optimizes the file transfers. They would probably get lynched if they charged for bug fixes because everybody knows how flawed Windows is.

What is good about OSS is most of the software is already written so distribution companies can focus on adding value to Linux. Microsoft not only has to burn money on R&D, they also have to burn money on their OS.
