    This is just spontaneous speculation, but it seems that encrypting the email address itself may be an option. How about instead of sending someone your email address, you send along with it a PGP public key. That way, anyone who wants to send you email must have your public key to encrypt the email address with. SMTP server simply has your private key to decrypt all incoming email addresses with and only accepts the ones which are valid once decrypted. Did you give someone your public key you didn't want to give it to? Generate a new key pair and propogate it to the SMTP server and all trusted recipients. What do you think?

    Speaking of Atari ROMS, I wonder if anyone minds them getting redistributed now that the company is kaput? It would be nice to be able to distribute a bootable emulator CD which actually comes with some roms. :)

    If it weren't for their kudzu autodetection tools, projects like knoppix would have had to spend a lot more development time. I'll forgive them for rpm because of kudzu :)

    RedHat is one of the first for-profit software companies which has offered a free upgrade path. Deciding to EOL support for older versions makes perfect sense. If the dstribution is free, why support older versions? If I worked in RedHat's support center, I would want to shake the hand of whoever made that descision.

    Yes, which nine out of ten times happens to be the person using the OS anyways.. At least in Linux we try to beat in the idea that doing normal stuff as root is bad. Try telling your mother she has to login as "Mom" and then install software as "Administrator". I think not. I'd rather just let her login to her linux box as "Mom" and I'll ssh over to it if she wants something installed. :P

    if you are smart enough to know the difference. The installer guy who did my cable modem said the same thing where he had to install some software for it to work. He said it had to run in Windows so I booted Windows 2000 Professional inside a VMware session for him. The installer guy doesn't care whether I use the software or not; he just had to go through it on his checklist and have me sign the form. All this software did in my case was fire up explorer so he could get to the cable modem's web admin tools. Once that was done, he just loaded some cheezy software to set up my mail accounts. He was well aware that the software (in fact the entire windows installation) would be deleted when he left.

    I was thinking along those lines too. Isn't *BSD compiled using gcc? Should we then call them GNU/FreeBSD or somesuch?

    I, for one, do really appreciate the software that GNU has given me. I just wish they would get a new fucking name. Why can't Richard Stallman just change the name?

    This is such a common-sense thing, that it's hard to believe
    people are hiring employees dumb enough to do this shit, then
    subsequently hiring more "employees" to spy on them.

    Network usage rule #1 in an office is to always assume there is some sort of spyware logging you, and even if there isn't.. ever hear of a
    camera?

    I personally have had to be in charge of confidential data before and
    i'll tell you, hackers are nothing compared to your own stupid employees. Just block *msn.com, *hotmail.com in your firewall and remind people that company time is not for private email and be done with it. Then you can go back to the server room and browse porn
    in peace.

    I doubt it will harm Linux if QT catches on on the desktop. It already has for me since KDE happens to be based on it.

    I use fetchmail here to do that. fetchmail will pull all your pop3 mail off of the ISP's server. You can then do what you want with it, such as have your win boxes imap off of the linux server.
