I was wearing sports shoes (trainers as are called in the UK).
The thorn of a plant cut through the sole like if it was a hot knife through butter and , well, lets say it was quite bloody.
The locals, mostly San people, all wear sandals of very hard leather, and most recently, they make sandals with discarded tires.
If people that have walked on that terrain for 40000 years use shoes, you know what, I think I will continue to wear mine too, but not trainers, those are for, er, training.
Many of us wont like you, many of us will not pay you for your software, but please tell us at which point do the FSF police comes and beats you into submission to release your software under the GPL.
GPL is not about forced sharing, if you don't want to share then simply develop your own software. But if you take somebody else's software under the GPL, then sorry mate, but the price for that is to make your modifications public.
Don't like it? Don't use GPLed software. Nobody is forcing you, even if Stallman gives you nightmares.
At some point one has to decide when a law is simply immoral and stop benefiting from it.
Many people knew slavery was immoral, heck, many slave owners raped female slaves in the full knowledge that they were as human as themselves, but at the same time would stand for the shameful idea that slaves where subhuman and thus subject to be treated as such, as long as their sexual urges could continue to be satisfied and the slaves continued generating money for them.
During apartheid in South Africa, most White folk decided the status quo was OK, but there were many notable people that understood how disgusting the system was and fought against it, in many occasions to great detriment of their personal wealth and safety.
What are the big companies (Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Adobe, you know, all those that develop proprietary software) waiting to buy, I mean, lobby the required politicians in the US in order to abolish software patents?
Hoisted by their own petard, and they will continue to be so until they realize that the system as it is has to be abolished.
Honestly, they could solve this problem in a matter of weeks, but they don't because they like it like it is.
For people like my dad, who had principles, he planned and then left.
He was 45, no job when he left, but enough savings to fund his job search, nobody could ever tell him that he did something dishonest and he knew his children would never be ashamed of him
As it was he found a job a few months later after walking from the previous one as a matter of principle.
The anti intellectualism from some members in/. puzzles me to no end.
There is a point during your education when a book is no longer just a book, and when you learn to see it as the cultural product of a social context, with all the implications, both positive and negative, which should be open to debate.
That this activity may appear boring to some people whose narrow interests in life are constrained to the topics discussed in this website is not surprising, what is surprising is how many people here constantly whine about asking people to do an intellectual effort that is slightly more taxing than the regular apathy we are inculcating on the youth in general.
Sometimes I wonder why Chinese and Japanese people are the most ardent fans of things like classical music, opera, or serious cinema. Perhaps they normally get on with the boring bits of their education, reaping the benefits years later.
I am not saying it is sensible or clear, but it is not unique to Perl::pinguino:~$ sh $ Book='Perl For Dummies' $ echo 'The title is $Book' The title is $Book $ echo "The title is $Book" The title is Perl For Dummies
Microsoft and the manufacturers can't have it both ways.
If they are pretending that an EULA is legally binding (big if) then they must accept that some people will not want to use Windows and will want a refund.
Just follow the instructions in the onscreen EULA in order to reject the licensing "agreement" (when was the negotiation?) and then claim your money back.
"In order for Apple to be ruled a monopoly in the digital music player market, they would need to be proven to have the ability to set the prices for ipods without regard for the price of other music players. This would be a very tough sell in a court of law"
Lemme see, pretty much whenever one looks the price of an Apple gadget is the same. The price is fixed and companies are clearly not allowed to set the price as they see fit in order to compete for clients.
Add the exclusive contract with one mobile carrier per country and you are looking to something that looks quite similar to the IBM-Microsoft duopoly of early days.
There are thousands of artists, many of them very notable, that have no problems whatsoever.
Ditto for mathematicians and scientists.
So unless you show concrete eveidence regarding this (good luck) I think you are oversimplifying for nefarious purposes only known to your own good self.
I was raised as a Catholic, and am now an atheist by reasoned conviction.
What you say about the Catholic religion is factually incorrect. If you commit a sin and are not truly repentant then your confession is yet another sin and your initial sinning is not considered forgiven, in other words you are only adding to the burden by which you will be judged at the end of times.
it is also untrue that if you actually repent you are given carte blanche to sin again, since sinning again would demonstrate that you are not opening your heart to God and Jesus your saviour (first commandment: fail).
As for the matter of god watching and knowing, the Catholic church maintains that God itself decided to give humans free will. It may know what you are going to do, but that does not mean it wasn't your decision.
All is of course bunk, but if you are going to debunk it you need to know what you are actually talking about first.
But it is not like the FSF police is going to get you.
You will be punished by
- Not benefiting from the common wisdom of other programmers.
- Lots of people may not buy your software, many of us dislike the idea of depend on external entities for access to our own data.
That is it. Or what do you think Stallman is referring to? I hope now you can have a sound sleep.
And for many of us it represents the way in which culture between people is shared, transferred to the software arena.
if you can't see why this is really important (at least for some people) then I can't really help you .
I take marching orders from nobody, but I know who I agree or disagree with, as I am sure people of real relevance in the FOSS movement do.
You are the first person I know that describes agreement as subservience. Quite amusing actually.

If you don't like GPLed software, then don't use it and develop your own or licence it from developers of proprietary, closed source solutions.
People like you are pissed for having to pay a price for the work of others. You are cheapskates and hypocrites.
You develop some software.
You make it proprietary.
Many of us wont like you, many of us will not pay you for your software, but please tell us at which point do the FSF police comes and beats you into submission to release your software under the GPL.

That is the teacher guiding people because he has the necessary knowledge to do so.
Why do students have to be pampered, have choices and be entertained at every step of the educational process?
Life is not like that, you have great moments, not so good moments, and most of it occurs in an unremarkable fashion.
Setting the expectation of students to have all inspiring peripatetic teachers at all times, for all subjects, is simply unrealistic.

Very simple really.
Just follow the instructions in the onscreen EULA in order to reject the licensing "agreement" (when was the negotiation?) and then claim your money back.
Then install Linux or whatever else you want.

How many of the shinny toys can you use to buy iTunes wares? None, except the ones blessed by Apple.
So Apple is using its dominant position in the digital music market in order to favour its own hardware sales.
Apple is perilously close to be investigated for monopolistic behaviour, only Apple fanboys are closing their eyes to this fact.
If there ever was a place where the word "himself" could be used with impunity is in the above sentence.

Logs should go either or as well to a log server, whose only available service is syslogd and perhaps sshd.
Either generated in advanced or with tokens (SecurID or similar).
Yes. I copy it with my regular, non privileged account and then change ownership and permission in the target machine as root.
You don't need root for one of transfer of files.
