Nah. QA probably spent all day voting for Java. Everyone knows QA hates their companies' products.

You're TV must be pretty old if it only have one A/V connection.
Even with only one A/V connection, you can still use a VCR as a video switch, or buy an external video switch for a few bucks.
Or just buy a TV that isn't 10 years old.
Hell, I have 4 systems, a vcr, a dvd player, and a directdv receiver hooked up to my computer...and everything is switched through my home theater receiver.
So I don't see how this is "impossible."

The fact that it plays PS1 games is a HUGE factor in its success, IMHO. My other sister (who's kids have an N64) are not getting a new console this year because of the investment required to build up a new library of games. With the PS2, you get the best of both worlds: ability to start building up your new game library, while preserving your existing one.

Yeah, the ability to preserve my current library with backwards compatibility is very important. Unfortunately, anyone who buys a Gamecube is forced to throw their N64 and games into the garbage immediately, since it is impossible to hook two systems up to one television at once.

The previous two years, I gave my father $150 Amazon certificates. Last time I was home, I opened up the kitchen drawer and found the unused (and expired) certificates under a pile of junk.

Depending on where you live, those gift certificates might still be good. I know that here in California, it's against the law to sell gift certificates that expire. Amazon has instructions on their page on how to redeem "expired" certificates for these states.

Nobody seems to like those Amazon gift certificates, though... I gave one to someone at my company in a gift exchange a couple of years ago and entered my email address when purchasing it so it would remain secret. A year later, I get an email saying it hasn't been used and is about to expire, so I just spent it myself. =)

  5. One way to break in... on How Does One Become a Game Designer? · · Score: 3
...is to start at a lower position. I work in the industry, and started out as a tester. Over here, when a team needs a designer, they often look in-house. They usually start with the test department, since it's full of people who know and play games. Hell, a lot of the designers and artists around here don't even HAVE degrees. (Having one doesn't hurt, of course.) The other benefit is that you can learn how the design process works before actually diving into it yourself... not to mention learning how company politics work.

The company I work out does mainly console and coin-op games, though, so YMMV in the computer gaming world.

  6. The best system... on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 1
...is the one that sounds best to you. Nothing beats listening to demo systems yourself.

That being said, I'm running a set of Energy e:XL speakers (e:XL 26 front, e:XL R rear, e:XL C center, e:XL-S10 sub). These nicely compliment my home theatre system, crowned by a 36" Sony XBR Vega (It's not Wega, dammit, look at Sony's website). From all the speakers I listened to, these were definitely the best sound for the price. There are a wide range of models for the front speakers ranging from $200-$1200, and subwoofers ranging from $300-$1700. You can easily put together a full 5.1 system for under $1500.

If you want to go the bargain route, the Energy Take5 series is $800 for a set of 5 satellite speakers and a sub. I find that full range front speakers add a lot to the soundstage, so I don't really recommend going this route.

I do recommend avoiding Bose at all costs, however. Though they're nice and small, they also have limited frequency range, distort easily, and are grossly overpriced. The Take5 series has much better sound at a much lower price, if you want to go the satellite route.

You can check out Energy speakers at www.energy-speakers.com, including prices.
