    Modern archaeologists have been able to read etched stone records from 5000 years ago. And most of the deciphering was done in the 19th century - ie. without the help of computers.

    I think 2000 years from now they can handle whatever system we can dream up.

    How about not judging *any* people or huge metropolitan regions based on useless, inaccurate stereotypes?

    Eh, I don't think you understood my post :)

    You don't need to mow in any place you replace the turf with native plants and grasses.

    IMO the only person who should need to be mowing 6+ acres of plain turf with no trees is the groundskeeper at a polo field. I mean, jeez, a football (American or otherwise) field is just over 1 acre...

    1) are you calling the NATO actions in Libya a *war*? A few air strikes do not make a war, and there are no ground troops and have been no casualties. Current statistics:

    Iraq: $800,000,000,000 4442
    Afgh. $400,000,000,000 1584
    Libya: $550,000,000 0

    Yep, they are about equivalent. And while the estimate for Libya is about $750M, the other two could easily double.

    2) The "war" phases of Luckily Obama (and most Democrats and Republicans in Congress) have the sense to understand you can't just go into a county, wipe out its infrastructure and government, and leave. We did the damage, now we get to clean it up.

    Though I'm not sure why I even bothered, you already advertised yourself as a troll up front...

    Since 1975 Obama is the only Democrat who has increased it as a percentage of GDP. And that is an important normalization, both due to inflation and economic stability. Most people are in much better financial shape with a $200,000 income and a $300,000 mortgage than they are with a $40,000 income and $80,000 in student loans, even though the former sounds like a much larger debt.

    Excellent answer. If it's traditional turf grass, it's not even native to the US, it requires shit tons of water and pesticides to keep looking good, and it just a plain waste of time and gas to mow.

    Plant some trees for christs sake.

    Better yet, plant some plants that were actually native to your area (including trees...)

    If I had 6 acres, I'd love to try to restore a significant part to whatever the "original" condition for the region (Illinois prairie, California Chaparral, etc)

    You'd have 10x the native birds, butterflies, etc. It would take some work to restore it, but it's more of a hobby (if you consider "mowing the lawn" a hobby you need help).

    Democrats have been so bad for the US debt! Or maybe the last two years are first time it has risen as a percentage of US GDP under a Democrat since 1975. Still Obama's fault, since he started 2 useless wars... oh, wait, that inflection point seems to be set squarely in his predecessor's term. Personally I'll wait until the end of this term to see how much of Bush's damage he can undo.

    Or should I just say "you're so right-of-center you don't need facts and statistics, they just get in the way..."

    Just the fact that we were even thinking about defaulting or raising the debt limit should have lowered our credit rating.

    Reagan raised the debt ceiling eight times. Nobody even batted an eye.

    Actually, Reagan raised it 18 times, and Bush II raised it 7. Lack of eye batting mostly true.

    Eh, no, I quoted that IN MY POST... :) And that was the point - their old HDD system cost as much (and took up more space) as the new SSDs. Heard of Moore's law?

    And for large storage solutions SSDs are still significantly more expensive. The do have plenty of advantages, but price is still not one of them...

    Of course everyone would love to replace all of their storage with SSD if price was no object.

    The closest they come to mentioning cost is:

    So, cost of new SSDs was similar to whatever HDDs they bought years ago? Yeah, that's kind of how it goes...

    Nimbus prices its product on a per-terabyte basis - it charges $10,000 per usable terabyte

    $10,000 per terabyte. Ok, then. Sure, it's faster, if you are willing and able to pay 10x the cost of *current* HDD-based systems...

    Don't worry, I still came to the conclusion that their app store is a shady rip off, and I'd never use it. I agree that it's misleading, too. But it's not a bait and switch if they specifically asked a question about it before signing up and were told the correct answer, and decided to do it anyway. Do I have to quote their article AGAIN?

    All this seemed way too one sided to us, Amazon is being predatory here, and asking developers (who are often desperate for exposure) to give away their app, in order to promote Amazon.

    Sounds like they knew the terms to me...

    But it didn't. In RTFA, they point out that they even emailed for clarification and the answer was:

    All these highly valuable placements are at no cost to you. We want to promote your app and in exchange of the placements, at the 0% rev share for one day only

    Further, there was clearly no confusion about it, because he goes on to say:

A heated debate broke out in our office about whether we should or not. I was firmly against, my business partner for.     So, they consciously decided to give it away as an experiment, and now they are complaining that they didn't get paid (mostly because of a temporary reporting glitch that showed some revenue).

    The Amazon Store does sound horrible, but they knew what the terms were.

    Phones in general are a mature market dominated by entrenched players that are not Apple.

    If you are talking US smartphone market, that's just not true.

    Apple has the single largest share by company. Android as a platform is larger, but it's not like those companies using Android aren't still competing against each other. Certainly there is no entrenched player dominating.

    Given that their software and UI design team is orders of magnitude larger than their hardware and ID team(s), yes, they do. The device is nothing without its OS, UI, SDK, dev tools, etc. Saying they don't "make hardware" because they use contract manufacturing like everyone else is pedantic to the point of being silly...

    Also, do you have any evidence to back the statement "a lot of the design work is outsourced?" I tried to confirm that, but everything I read says the opposite, to the point that Apple is proud enough of that fact that they put "Designed by Apple in California" on every box.

    Besides being irrelevant to innovation (it's the same company!), the iPhone was released before the iTouch, so it doesn't even make sense.

    The DS has a really simplistic single contact resistive screen. It's like saying digital HDTV isn't innovative because B&W CRTs were already invented. Multitouch capacitive screens and the UI design to make them intuitive on a small high res mobile device was what made it innovative.

    And Blackberry?? I'm not even going to bother...

    And most of this doesn't even consider the software involved. Who cares about hardware innovations if no one has the slightest clue how to make them usable (and fun) for the masses?

    Ugh. Personally I'd love to see someone else in the market take the lead in true innovation, I can't stand Apple in many ways. But I'm not so ignorant that I need to deny their obvious talent for HW, SW, and ID.
