  1. Re:Difference between Community and Official. on Mandrakelinux 10 Official Released · · Score: 2, Informative

Thus it appears that at least one of the differences between Communty and Official is that the latter contains proprietary software and drivers that need not and cannot be distributed pursuant to the GPL or other Open Source license.

Not quite. There are two "editions" of both Community and Official, the Download edition (available to everyone) and the Powerpack edition (only available to silver members and above, and contaning the proprietary software you mentioned). So everyone will be able to get Community Download and Official Download (in a few weeks), but only silver members and above can get Community Powerpack and Official Powerpack.

As others have pointed out, the difference between Community and Official is that Community was released as a kind of final, final release candidate, and once Mandrake were happy, they then released Official.

At the depth these things are designed to be used nitrogen narcosis isn't going to be an issue.

I think you've misunderstood the parent poster's point - he's not talking about nitrogen narcosis, but the fact that at a depth of 30 feet, the air in your lungs will be at a pressure of about 2 atmospheres. If you swam up to the surface and held your breath, that air will expand as you rise, until at the surface you would have twice the volume of air in your lungs, which would be unpleasant to say the least!

I'm glad the european judicial systems are not as prone to SCO's legal guerilla tactics as the US system is.

Of course it isn't the whiz bang system that e-voting is but it's 10000 year track record says that it is ready for the mainstream :)

That would be rather difficult, seeing as paper has only been around for about 2200 years

Well, here in the UK, Dell charge a 50 GBP delivery fee. I would assume that they would charge a similar amount to come and pick it up again, leaving me rather substantially out of pocket. I was just lucky I knew someone who needed it.

My father asked me to buy him a PC, so I ordered him a nice little Dell desktop. The look on his face when I took it over to his house was priceless - it turns out he wanted a laptop! He's always had a laptop from his company, and to him PC == laptop.

I understand that the definition of PC includes both desktop and laptop, but I think most people would assume PC == desktop.

Luckily I managed to sell the desktop on to a friend, and my father got his laptop a few weeks later...

I can't think of any other author whose characters reach a comparable level of out-and-out badassitude - Gibson doesn't even come close.

You should read some Iain M. Banks then. Some of his seriously badass characters include:
    * Horza (Consider Phlebas), the shapechanger whom we meet as he is just about to be drowned in a sewercell.
    * Gurgeh (The Player of Games) who has to bet parts of his body on a game with a board the size of a large room.
    * Sharrow (Against a Dark Background), the leader of a combat team that has been given a personality-attuning virus that improves their reaction time, now in the Antiquities business, and searching for the fabled Lazy Gun whilst being hunted down by a religious sect.
    and my personal favourite,
    * Cheradenine Zakalwe (Use of Weapons), one-time fighter pilot based on a tabular iceberg rather than an aircraft carrier, a man sent in by Special Circumstances to do their dirty work for them.
