  1. Ponie on State of the Onion 7 · · Score: 4, Informative

To be sure, none of them are good reasons, but I'm told it will make the London.pm'ers deliriously happy if I say, "I want a Ponie".
And I do want a Ponie.

For those who are wondering, a 'pony' is cockney rhyming slang for crap:
    Pony and trap: crap.

New Scientist is where it's at.

I've (almost) stopped reading it after too many "digital - where the signal is converted into a stream of ones and zeros" type articles.

I will also often learn that males have XY sex chromosomes, and females XX, and that a light year is the time taken for light to travel in a year.

Still, the Last Word is often interesting and feedback is always +5 Funny.

Doh! I've been trolled by Forbes!

...and we're the ones paying for the development of new drugs. You don't think that R&D is free, do you?

Hmmm. You think that GlaxoSmthKline, AstraZeneca, Roche, Novartis, Aventis and other EU based companies don't do any R&D, do you? BTW, all the big Pharmas spend much more on marketing than R&D.

I'm always amazed at the ignorance of Europeans. They think that there is some kind of health-epedemic over here.

We watch ER, which accounts for both. ;-)

We have healthcare issues. So does Canada. So do European countries.

Yes, but have a look at the WHO health rankings 2002. See all those European countries up at the top there? Hmm... Where's Canada? 30th. Where's the US? 37th, between Costa Rica and Slovenia.

Dammit, last time I was in the US, I picked up some crotch-critters, and it cost me over $200 for a tube of ointment. Convienient? Not really. I can buy permethrin off the shelf in Europe (less than $10). Not efficient? I disagree; they certainly seemed to take my money pretty efficiently.

Wouldn't taking a remote screenshot of someone else's desktop denote a potential security gotcha?

Erm... Yep. Nope, you don't need to be root. screencapture's permissions by default are -r-xr-xr-x.

OSX is full of this kind of laxity. Try 'nidump passwd /' as any old luser. It gives you a /etc/passwd filewith the encrypted passwords included. Run it through John the Ripper, you've got the root password.

I once read a book which was also ridden with illogical pseudo-science rubbish.

    Take some examples:

    • Changing water into wine
    • Feeding 5000 people with five loaves and two fish
    • Walking on water
    • Raising three people from the dead
    • Hero comes back to life after dying

Won't someone please think of the children and ban this rubbish?

Funnily enough, I don't remember the author; it might well have been George Lucas.

There was a railgun in Eraser, also starring Arnie. There was some nonsense in the dialogue about it firing projectiles at the speed of light. Funnily enough though, Arnie's arm doesn't recoil into orbit when he fires it.

I suspect there's much more to this case than the articles mention.
