  1. Re:Different Hemispheres on Aussie TV Networks Fight BitTorrent · · Score: 1

One thing people forget is that Australian's and NZ'ers get shows later is simply because we are in the southern hemisphere.
I think the main reason is because, in general, for an American or English show to get on Australian TV it has to have been a proven mega-sucess in America or England first. Australian TV stations wait till a show is a definite hit overseas until they bother playing it here.
Australia also has a very small amount of free-to-air stations (ABC, SBS, Channel 7, Channel 9, Channel 10) compared to many other countries (at least I think so, might be wrong, live in Sydney but don't watch TV).
Its just like the way, with a few exceptions, the movies that make it into the cinemas in Australia are either the big budget blockbusters that get released everywhere, or films that have already proven themselves in American or English cinemas.

  2. Superstition on FreeBSD Announces Contest To Replace Daemon Logo · · Score: 1

I guess this is similar to the way the Palm Tungsten went straight from T3 to T5, skipping T4, since 4 is an unlucky number in China (or something like that), or the way hotels often miss out on having a 13th floor?

It seems to me common sense that you should not have a logo which is symbolic of evil to a large number of people, if you want it to appeal to a wide market, unless you want your product to seem like a naughty teenager thing (similar to fcuk I guess).
It is sad that people still retain superstitions like this, and that these superstitions might actually affect their decisions to use/purchase a product, but the outrage over the change of FreeBSD's logo reminds me of the bickering between the various liberation fronts in "The Life of Brian".

(For one, I actually really like the daemon mascot - it makes a great unofficial mascot - but sadly it would be a mistake to have it smack bang on the front of a FreeBSD box in a computer store.)

I watched sweepers sweeping coal dust off the floor, and a hundred feet behind them, new coal dust was settling down again.

That stuff isn't very good for your lungs either. I know people who had to do a few days of work experience as a medical student in a coal mining place, and they were coughing up stuff for days afterwards, as if they had been smokers for years.

A friend of mine left some food crumbs inside his computer--I assume he eating while he built it.
About 2 weeks later (it was summer) he opened it to add some ram, and the entire motherboard was covered with ants.

I had two cheapo power supplies fail on me in a row, when building a few computers. After about 5 minutes of running, smoke started pouring out of the computers--the cables from the power supply had melted and the plastic had fused them together.
My first (and only) attempt at modding a heatsink to fit on a cpu resulted in a spine-tingling grinding sound as I tried to force it down on the motherboard--the edge of one corner of the core had been ground into dust :/.
