You're talking about the <1993 demoscene. How can you make such statements when you obviously has now knowledge of the current stuff?
it's
not a coder thing anymore (a coder only can't compete) and with the new hardware accelerated stuff and acceptance of use of third party libraries the focus is less on code, and effects than the overall feeling/artistic aspect of the demo.
It's quite clear if you check all the latest and/or good demos/intros (moralhardcandy/blasphemy, metamorf/zden, 96/damage, codename chinadoll/katastro.fi, antimoney/3state, spot/exceed, art/haujobb...)
If you're interested in something more abstract and experimental, you may check the productions released this year at Assembly'2k, Spot by Exceed, the winner is for example a software rendered movie sharing some imagery with pixar movies, Art by haujobb is a 3d show in a dreamy museum, featuring unreal objects, (Lapsus/Maturefurk is sharing the same design)...
Basically all the productions kicked ass. And this weekend just finished the LTP4 party, where we had a great fun seeing stuff like Antimoney/3state (a 1bpp, nicely designed windows 64k intro which works under Wine), Just a touch of funk/digital murder, a wonderfully keyframed music video, and lots of other lush stuff... (like Downtown / retro ac. and Purple / Orion)
If you think you've seen everything there
is to see in gaming, you're wrong - if you
haven't tried out The Typing of the Dead,
that is. Sega has created possibly the
weirdest game ever, a title that's so
unexpected it defies logic when one tries
and figure out the frame of mind of the
individual at Sega of Japan who said
"Hey, we'll make a typing game, and
make it fun." The Typing of the Dead is
the kind of game that, like Dance Dance
Revolution and Beatmania makes people
look on as you play, and with good
reason: you're killing zombies with
precise key strokes! Who wouldn't be
intrigued at the prospect.
Quite frankly, I've never saw a license ala microsoft on game I bought... so it's still unclear to me we really buy a license to use in the case of games (I don't think such thing is implicit for software)
If only they still had the source code or the developement environment to run/compile the software!
Actually we have the same problem in the demo scene, old demos are very hard to watch as most emulators fail to cope with the kind of tricks a demo needs. And we still don't have any decent 8086 emulator which would emulate the Gravis Ultrasound, a necessary step to be able to watch the old pc demos!
Of course if we had the sources for those demos we may be able to port them, but this demos are the kind of productions where the binary is really the end product..
It would be really sad if this part of the modern culture disappeared in such way..
I seriously doubt it also, and for one thing which is sure, is that the first GSM network experiment was done under an IETF experimentation in paris. (in the 80s)
(IETF is the european telecommunication regulating body)
I don't buy this at all. let's take a few examples:
Ftp is already facilitating the transfer of illegal goods, irc does, search engines do. Roads facilitate also the transfer of illegal goods, as well as cars, and almost anything on earth can be used illegaly.
Laws are most of the time applied on behaviours, intents not the medium of the illegal activity. When politicians start to attack the medium, it's either because: the medium is either dangerous, or not well known. I think we are in the last case.
What makes Napster special, is that the company built the system on a mostly illegal behaviour, and used it to make profit.
And let's not forget there are many cases where trading mp3s and files can be legal, fair and a benefit to everyone, artist included.
And a very good coder.. as well as a person who loves to play the arrogant sucker in newsgroup;) Didn't met him yet... got to visit those german/dutch/danish demoparties one day.
yeah horrible game design, and it has been implemented also.
Basic idea: you are a demo scener in a party, trying to improve your fame level. Each time you talk to some elite you gain fame level when you talk to your fellow lamer afterwards. But beware of the evil orgas!
smart cards are usually made to be cheap and distributed in huge numbers. The characteristics of this one makes me seriously wonder about the target of this technology.
it surely have its applications in very specific markets... not in the mainstream (at least for now. Especially since most of the countries in the world still have those shitty, crappy, old magnetic based cards.
I was very happy to see this feature added, as I had some obfuscated code/poetry to write using this. Problem is, on solaris, with this fresh perl 5.6.0 binary I just compiled, the example they provide doesn't even work.
whereas this works: my $var;
sub mysub : lvalue { $var; }
mysub = "test";
print $var . "\n";
do work, but not with a return before $var! ( I guess return evaluate its argument somehow )
I strongly disagree.. those people don't care about art, they are called artists but are just entertainers. Artistic value is very hard to judge, but I'm sorry, I just can't believe people are buying cds to listen to some music for its artistic value.
This is true that most people just are using mp3 for pure warezing purpose. But by considering mp3 and warez egal you put a doubt on ANY use of MP3 for music distribution.
There are many musicians distributing music and using mp3 to do so. 95% of all the music files I have on my hdd are coming from those sources. And mp3 benefited then as it permits to give a wide audience to their productions.
Now, that people are using mp3 to store files they hear every minute on the radio or can find at any record store, th
Now that we all have the possibilities to create with our equipment, now that everyone can take part in a creation process, we could make realize the people who made the movie industry, the music industry that their scheme is starting to sound old.
Right now, I can tell you that 90% of all the music I listen to is produced by independant artists on the net, many of which came from the demoscene and tracking scene. (links)
The very fact that those scenes, and their audience exist proove the point that a society only following the big standards of life, of art is not our only future.
People organize in small groups of interests, in tribes, and even if the mass media still keep and probably will keep its power, it is now possible to consider other sources of music. This is true for music now. Let's just hope it will be true for movies in the future.
I'm always amazed by the warez-people. Many of them are conventionnal people who are warezing because they are desperate enough, and unable to get access, or search for other sources of art.
Bravo!"

I'm wondering what the connection is between psst and the authors of the site... it's quite unclear when reading this as it sounds like the authors received the letter..
Operating System is a very vague term to represent an environment for applications. The Java Virtual Machine + API can be considered as an Operating System in itself. Gnome and Kde are nearly operating systems. Smart cards have operating systems.
the bit about radio quotas is incorrect. The ratio is 60% of french-language music (not french music actually, so people like daft punk aren't in the quota) and the rest for other languages' musics.

I'm sorry you can do high quality music already with trackers, just substitute your MOD/S3M by XM/IT/Buzztracker.

I keep listening to those amazing sid tunes all the time.... and it's not nostalgia, I've never had any c64. The sound/melodies just kick ass.

32bpp = [xx rr gg bb]
xx stands for nothing
rr for one red byte
gg for one green byte
bb for one blue byte
24bpp = [rr gg bb]
=> same number of color, 32bpp just is aligned on dword addresses.
