  1. Were the rude words necessary? on Google Experiments · · Score: 1

Hey, free speech is great and all, but what's up with the rude words at the end of that submission? Please... I'm sure at least 50 other people submitted this story in a way that's not offensive to many people. I hope everyone got their giggles out of it.

The PJB is available with up to a 30 gig hard drive and connects via USB... I've got the 20 gig and it's great. Plus, linux support through the OpenPJB Sourceforge project that even includes an emacs mode.

  3. How about some innovation? on Slashdot Updates · · Score: 1

Ok, so we knew this had to happen at some point, right? No other advertising-only seems to be doing very well, so why would slashdot survive? I don't think the t-shirt sales from ThinkGeek will cover the expenditures of a site that gets so much traffic (although more products with "#include " might help).

So where's the innovation from the Slashdot readers? Yeah, we all hate the ads, but can we give Slashdot a viable alternative? Subscriptions are one, but that's boring and isn't likely to be a complete solution. I don't even think larger ads combined with a subscription will work, either...

Throw out some other ideas -- micropayments? Just another way to do subscriptions, but it could be interesting. Depost $5 into your slashdot account each week, but be careful of how many headlines you click into for 5 cents a piece...

Is there anything else? Or are web sites going to degrade down to a few sites owned by a few mega-companies that use them to provide a wee bit of news with a ton of ads promoting their new fall lineup?

  4. Re:They can't have invented this.... on TiVo Infringes On Pause Patent · · Score: 2, Interesting

Isn't it a bit different that the live TV stream keeps going and keeps filling the buffer? When it gets to the "end" of the buffer (30 minutes for Tivo, I believe), it "pushes" you along and moves the buffer ahead to keep recording the stream. I don't think a buffering CD player (or MP3 player) does that since it's not really a "live" stream...

Not having seen the patent I can't be sure, but just from the blurb from slashdot it seems patentable. Surely Tivo knew about it...? Does Tivo have any patents?

  5. VoiceStream GSM on Looking For Wireless Handheld E-Mail And Web? · · Score: 1

I have a Nokia 6190 GSM phone with service through VoiceStream... the reason I went with GSM is because of its data capabilities. TDK has a GSM softmodem for Palm that lets me run a cable from my Palm to my Nokia phone and use it as a 9600 bps modem. Combine that with an IMAP server I setup at home, MultiMail on the palm, and ProxiWeb's web browser, and I can be pretty well connected while on the road.

The 9600 bps is a bit painful at first, but for checking my email it's really not too bad. Plus with IMAP, I can selectively choose which messages to download.

Nokia also has a DataSuite package that runs on the Win32 platform that uses the phone as a modem... so far I haven't found anything for linux, however (anyone?).

I'm pretty happy with my current solution... I keep reading about 144kbps through GSM in a year or so and that makes me smile even more.
