No, the moral of the story IS "don't use twitter" but it IS also don't use religion.
ALL RELIGIONS are wrong and dangerous, not just MUSLIMS.
Religions no matter how 'peaceful' and 'just' are evil, and are jingoistic self serving means of control and oppression.
(look at Christianities/western worlds track record before criticizing Muslim "iron ageness" its all evil, and its ALL because of RELIGION...)
Twitter is both a tool of freedom of speech and of oppression.
i think anyone serious about freedom should avoid twitter, it is not the gateway it seems to be.
anyplace where the police/govs/the "majority" seem to find themselves is corrupted, and shouldnt be used for real discourse.
just avoid twitter...
I am really not buying this... If you are going to write about rising evil empires why are you not writing about Google?
As big as Apple is, its going to stay a 2nd in line in the tech market, even as it dominates some parts of it.
Apple's ways have never really veered from their pattern so none of the "negative" behaviors they are being accused of are the result of their success, they have always been transparent.
Accuse them of whatever you will, they unlike Goog are not changing their behavior with power.
I call bs on this bit of "analysis".
I just stopped working for Barnes&Noble.com and it was on the 9th floor of this building.
BN is centralizing even more of the corporate into that building.
Armani North America is in this building. Among other fancy upscale tenants.
(all design and corporate for Armani, Armani exchange, etc. also freelanced there a while back)
There are literally hundreds of big name companies there.
its also a really culturally significant building for its New York history.
Hot dogs are never raw dood... always pre-cooked.
but he sounds like a nightmare.
I had one of them before he also locked himself in his office, then decided to sue his 3 other founding partners for damages... Because he was not included in decision making (which he excluded himself from by not going to meetings, screaming randomly at people and being a general anti-social jerk.)
and yes it was design company in which he was the main tech person.
We all know windows sucks.
We also know that Linuxs is funny.
The real solution is just to install osX (see osx86projects).
Then go to "System Preferences/Security/"
1) Disable automatic login
2) Check on require a password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.
3) Turn on "FileVault" or home directory encryption, this will encrypt all your good stuff.
That is it.
No extra software, no fancy shmancy tricks, nothing.
just straight out of the bittorentbox Kalyway OSX.
IF you want to get super fancy, you could write an "AppleScript" that requires a usb key or other volume to be mounted to let you use the computer on top of that.
see easy peasy.
UNIX os, shmoodelicious interface, use any MS & Adobe shyte software you would normally use (albeit very slowly) and have a native encryption system + continuous backups with "Time Machine" --onto the usb key that is required to start/use the computer.
Tada!!!

Hey the point I thought was that Lenovo is just the most recent one to go widescreen only.
HP, Sony, Apple, et al have been widescreen only for a while.
(also PHP, Perl and Python runs seamlessly on Linux rather than on Mac, I mean PHP or Perl or Java is well TESTED on Linux rather than on Mac).
What the hell are you talking about?
PHP PERL PYTHON and all your linux and most Unix server software has been running perfectly in OSX since the day it was released.
every single mac install comes with apache, php, perl and python installed by default.
Mysql is one click away as well.
Furthermore most software that needed to be recompiled to run on the power architecture doesn't need to be anymore as an apple server is just another x86 server.
Most developers who I work with on major web projects using PHP/Mysql/postgres/Oracle/Python/Ruby do all their work in OSX, with some compatibility testing on windows, not much on Linux. (iVillage, BlackPlanet, VH1, MTV, Coke, L'oreal, Nickolodeon, Scolastic, etc)
This is to their advantage because they can use all vi or emacs on the command line, they can use all opensource tools, as well as subetha, bbedit, etc, but then they can have MSword, excel and all the garbage that production managers/account execs send them as well, without using some clanky converter software.
further down your post: How many really bother whether Linux is an OFFICIAL UNIX or not
Why should it matter if its an official Unix?
Well for starters because it means that most applications and application frameworks from any other Unix system can run on osx, either with a recompile or directly if from another x86 based Unix; again obviating your ignorant argument about Linux being the ONLY server.
Second because any Unix admin can open an osx command line and will feel at home, as he would on Solaris, AIX, IRIX, Unixware, etc.
All I care is it should be scalable, secure and supports major application frameworks and databases.
Exactly, which is what OsX does. its scalable, you can form a grid system in a few clicks or command line commands, it supports every major framework as all the other Unix systems do, and it runs mySQL, Postgres, Oracle, DB2, and any other unix compatible open source database.
This is so simple...
They just all suck.
suck suck suck.
I personally still use Mosaic 1.1 on MacOS 7.5.1 on a PowerComputing PowerWave 150, with a 100MB HD and 32MB of RAM, and apart from Flash related stuff and css sites, everything is perfect.
I can see all text, and if I look in source code view I can guesstimate images and stuff by title, and use my imagination to fill in the gaps.
Anyway, as per usual the real issue is what is the purpose of a web browser.
for myself its to view web applications and information pages, which hopefully are coded to the current web standards.
Anything else is not really necessary.
If gmail works properly, if I can pay my phone bill and use the latest 'Beta2.0' site I am good.
If i can connect to my bank and do banking I am good.
anything else is useless.
I use a specialized news reader for usenet, same for RSS, same for email. Do I need a browser that has integrated gmail+flickr+myspace, twitter integration?
nope.
Do I need a browser to call home when something doesn't load, NOPE.
Do I need a fast, simple clear interfaced, UN-buggy, secure, lean, mean browser YES.
All the rest, really is bogus.
As far as Apple committing a couple of developer to a project that is already open source and distributing it, what exactly is the harm in it?
As far as this guy's commentary about it, what a bunch of BS, (the cold world of windows) ah ah ah, don't make me laugh.
the high standards and bug averse windows users...
pwahah ah aha ah aha ah.
what is this guy smoking.
These are the same users that keep using the most bug prone crash prone EXPENSIVE os, and the most crash prone security breach full browser, just because they are just too LAZY to look for an alternative.
Any argument to the contrary is just PURE BS to get click troughs which this guy has succeeded in doing by writing a totally bunk article which slashdot has picked up and therefore given him EXACTLY what he really wanted.
He was beaten down and sent to the Hospital by 2 people who where upset about his anti fundamentalism/anti ID stance.
THESE ACTIONS are the real problem, as they represent the blindness of religious fundamentalism when pressed by the freedom of speech.
The reason I think ID is an issue, is that fundamentalism doesn't allow for an other opinion, it is intractable in its stance about what is right in religion. (whatever the religion).
Even thought Dr Mireki might not have been the most tactful person in his approach to counter the ridiculous decision in his state; it is NEVER acceptable for anyone to be terrorized because of his/her opinions, and the reality in America is that anyone who EVER confronts the religious rights ideals, gets taken down by any means necessary.
This can be seen in the horrendous actions of anti-abortion activists; the pervasiveness of anti-sex education & the ineffective yet over emphasized abstinence movement; the obvious miscarriages of authority that are happening at the FDA in relation to the abortion pill; the rise of intolerance of religious differences; or any idea that goes against "Christians".
In effect, this is the reflection of the Christian fundamentalist leader currently in power.
So its all grand to have people here criticize his actions, when the reality is that in his particular environment (the middle of the bible belt in Kansas), he actually has to deal with the effects of these religious fundamentalist directly, especially working in the field of religion.
Whether it is from the possibility of loosing his jobs from the university who feels public pressure trough their funding, or attacks on his and his loved ones physical person, this is not like being on slashdot with an alias and saying whatever crap and then disappearing. If you cross them they go after you especially if you have clout.
Personally I really wish had not backed down, and given the course; furthermore the University should really support him no matter what as this directly reflects on their credibility as an independent institution of learning.
If I was from the developing world I would be insulted by such a saying action. oh wait I am from the 3rd world, well then this really feels like getting expired cigarettes, expired medicine, old text books (which are taken out of circulation in the states because they are not accurate or just plain offensive.) etc.
This really continues in a long tradition of giving really disturbingly dangerous material to people who can't complain... yuk.
needless to say Wikipedia is a festering hole of misinformation rumor and hearsay. the worst kind of "data".
I am not sure what you are saying but I own a copy of Autocad for Mac OS 7, and there was concurrent support for DOS and Mac OS up till the point Autodesk released Autocad for WinNT (and became retarded) at which point it all fell apart. About the same time most Pro CAD/CAM/3D apps started moving to NT platform and away from Unix and MACOS AND DOS. MS bought Softimage, and gained critical control of OpenGL, pretty much destroyed SGI, and forced all engineers to really look at NT seriously, which in turn bought NT a lot of credibility, which in turn got more software companies run by Ngineers to look at NT etc etc etc.
WHY didn't Apple buy Alias I will never understand. (Steveo that was a dumb4ss thing to do fyi)
The only people responsible for Autocad and pro Engineer not running on anything but Win are MS, which are still going to attack anyone trying to do otherwise with further destruction of OpenGL and pushing of crap like Direct3d or whatever it is called now. God I hate MS.
Wow more unsustainable "resources" show up everyday due to the destruction on other non-sustainable resources. Amazing, how stoopid humans are, we just deserve to be eradicated.
#1"Stuff" Nitpicking the word "Stuff" as being vague and then supporting your point by saying that the generic components of networking have not changed, and all new products are just extensions of old network principles; has nothing to do with his argument. (in the exact proportion of your accusation).
His point is that "Computer Security" is the 'Theme du Jours'. In that capacity it is creating a 'gold rush' which attract the typical components of the American "get rich quick at the expense of reason and of others" Capitalist system. (ok my words not his) In this you find, the 'well wishing righteous bigots, aka the preachers, aka motivational speakers aka Gurus'; your 'knee jerk silent majority aka the Mark, aka users aka the Market'; your 'OCD survivalists libertarian everything is insecure and therefore EVIL security fanatics aka the guy who already had a gas mask after 9/11 aka the 5 users of SU-Linux'; and lastely the most visible and successful member of the pack, 'the security consultant or company, your Symantecs, McAfee's etc, aka the snake oil traveling salesmen, aka the con artists aka the biziness men who have everything to loose and nothing to win if the security market where to disappear... Ask the last group what they feel about OSX, do you really think they like something which overnight destroyed usage of Norton Utilities Suite, Norton Antivirus Suite for the mac among others? Even if the MacOS market was lets say 50, 000 copies of the Norton Suite, (it was much more) at $49 a suite that is $2450000, not a small drop in any bucket.
So really if you believe what you are saying, then you completely misunderstood his usage of "inundated with a steady stream of new stuff" in your attack, he is not saying that there really is a specific NEW gizmo, but that 'Stuff' is being newly created in relation to computer security for the sake of computer security. in other words the more the headline 'Computer Security' appears in the media, the more of a business opportunity it becomes, the more of a business opportunity it becomes the more it appears in the media.
#2"Conferences" which conferences... well, well, the snake oil salesmen attacks the credibility of his accuser... really old tactic, too bad its been abused the world over, it is the theme of many a kung fu movie. I just checked with a friend who is a security analyst/IT person at Vendigo who is very knowledgeable on network security matters (one of the five users of SU-Linux) and he claims to have seen/observed not one but a few panels/lectures on computer security with Marcus Ranum. So unless you can support your "objective fact" to the contrary, then you are the one who failed in proving your points against YOUR lack of credentials.
#3"Books" Please tell me of the books you have written. your point is worthless unless you can show 1/2 a book worth of Computer security related info. sorry but again this is Typical FUD. sense when do the # of books a person has written on a subject the only way they would have an opinion on a subject?
#4"rhetorical" "computer security is definitely still a "hot topic." But why are we spending all this time and money and still having problems? Yes it is a hot topic but, although it is a rhetorical question let me answer that we are spending all this time and money into ComSec because nothing is fool, or for that matter crack, proof."
ok so I don't understand why his question is "rhetorical" definitions:
rhetorical adj 1. relating to the skill of using language effectively and persuasively 2. relating to or using language that is elaborate or fine-sounding but insincere
The thing is, all he proposes are subjective solutions to the problems, something which he clearly states repeatedly. Furthermore its on HIS website on which he publishes HIS opinions.
These are all real solutions which have been proven time and time again. (which is why its not a top 5 or top 10 such as you would find on zdnet or cnet, which are amazingly factually flawed it rags.) The reason I say proven repeatedly is that these are methodologies which are in effect in all design & engineering practice.
The last comment he makes in the 'Minor' category, comparing the fallibility of computer security software and the engineering of airplanes is a perfect example of these ideas. Planes are designed to fly without failure as it is not an option for the planes cargo. Failure would defeat the purpose of flying, which is why planes are not designed around what can possibly fail, nor are they tested by putting 777s in the air and forcing them to fail.
But that is just one example. I have time now to waste so I will answer some of your points in my next post, (not all of them I don't have that kind of time)
Despite the length of your reply, most of what you ascertain as contradictions to the OpEd are themselves Hogwash.
In fact your brand of attitude is basicly what support the great majority of the power hungry CIO/CTO/IT directors out there.
Every sentence you write is a personal attack on the author and for this reason ELIMINATES your arguments from the discussion as it only points to the pedantic FUD infested behavior of the likes of Microsoft who use the same kind of discussion 'technique' to distract people from the point of the "6 Dumbest Ideas..." to start with.
In the end none of your post was even remotely insightful, I really don't understand why you where moderated up. ugh.
very interesting, I am getting it. your analysis of the Pavlov's dog, raises a number of interesting questions, but definitely support the "Dumbest lists author" in his assertion that their is a significant erasing of boundaries when talking of computer network crime, that makes the criminal completely separate the effects of his crime on REAL people. This I feel is also a real issue in a Globalized Corporate economy where arbitrary invisible entities are considered equal to citizens in the judiciary of most countries. thanks for the reference
I am so with you! I worked on an IM project where the demo showed the send process of the IM transaction.
The business manager saw this and in his ecstasy of being able to launch early said put it on the production server ASAP, the production manager panicked and told him we needed a week to tie loose ends; and then told us we needed to get done the project done a month ahead of schedule because she couldn't get herself to remind the business manager that IM is 2-way communication process. So when we didn't make it, and it was declared OUR failure (the production team) and we didn't really care since being creatives in our heart of hearts we knew that it was only because of business for being STUPID.
sorry man but you didn't read the posts above your reply or more likely you didn't understand.
What is being discussed in the posts before yours is that Unix systems are inherently more secure because they are not user centric. Furthermore Os X is even less user centric as it seperates the 'usr' from the 'system' by a couple of more steps almost exactly emulating the solutions to the "dumbest security ideas".
*nixes, including Linux and OSX are inHerently NOT, Katrina's waiting to happen, if you would like to compare them to countries they are like Holland, or Japan which have very calculatedly included in the design of their cities disaster prevention ideas that have been tested with experience, and trough careful engineering as opposed to the typical, "Well if we make the wall 10 foot high and 4 feet thick there is no way water will break it". (its like in action movies where a bullet pierces trough water and hits a person 5 feet under... too bad using a typical bullet in this situation would fragment it to bits. Yes I watched myth busters, ah ah ah)
One last thing, your reaction to this is more Typical of fanboydom then any of the other posts so far. Ciao.
Ok I know all the sci-fi lovers out there are all super excited about the prospect of a space gold rush. but let me ask this. Do we really have to destroy another planet to satisfy the energy/consumption needs of HUMANS?
I say right now someone should draft a universe wide anti exploitation bill. All planets and moons should be off limit to commercial interests, to prevent said exploitation, until these planets are well understood.
I think its despicable that this is even being proposed and I really think any though of commercial exploitation is premature before we even understand the ecology of the planet.
I mean look at the destruction around you. Do you think it was caused by chipmunks?
Everyday I drive by useless Mc Mansions and new mall developments destroying forests and natural clearings and creating more detritus, consuming more energy per person to keep up than is warranted only to serve the vanity of some insecure, empty and shallow human shells.
why should other planets be made to pay for the retardation of the human species?
OK so its FRIDAY night and here I am commenting about pr0n making accessories, instead of getting some. sheesh!
I have to akxs, cause maybe I am missing something, but how is a journalist in the field, going to be able to upload to a remote server, when you have to first instal client software on whatever machine you are downloading to?
Also what initiates the downloads? The camera or the desktop? If its the camera I cannot wait to see the tiny interface for connecting. first a list of access points, then a list of clients. oh but don't most access point use NAT? I guess you first have to set up the access points to allow a particular port to open for that service to go trough? and so you should first walk around the neighborhood and make sure that the persons know you might be doing this. (especially in Florida where you will go to jail for using someone else's bandwidth.
hmm this seems a little complicated, but I realize its the future.
I hope it uses Bonjour or rendezvous whatever that is called now.
hmmm, what about Linux and OSX support?
I think I will stick to the bluetooth ROB-1 cam that sony makes. (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000833035337/) A little bluetooth camera that connects to sony cell phones which can then send the image to others, and moves by itself, would make much more sense to use for that journalist in Gaza getting the beat down from Israeli military goons, or the guy watching some random LA cops use some black guy as a punching bag?

OsX might not be the most popular server for sure, but Linux market share in that market is DECLINING, not increasing:

His point is that "Computer Security" is the 'Theme du Jours'.
In that capacity it is creating a 'gold rush' which attract the typical components of the American "get rich quick at the expense of reason and of others" Capitalist system. (ok my words not his)
In this you find, the 'well wishing righteous bigots, aka the preachers, aka motivational speakers aka Gurus'; your 'knee jerk silent majority aka the Mark, aka users aka the Market'; your 'OCD survivalists libertarian everything is insecure and therefore EVIL security fanatics aka the guy who already had a gas mask after 9/11 aka the 5 users of SU-Linux'; and lastely the most visible and successful member of the pack, 'the security consultant or company, your Symantecs, McAfee's etc, aka the snake oil traveling salesmen, aka the con artists aka the biziness men who have everything to loose and nothing to win if the security market where to disappear...
#2 "Conferences"
which conferences... well, well, the snake oil salesmen attacks the credibility of his accuser...
really old tactic, too bad its been abused the world over, it is the theme of many a kung fu movie.
#3 "Books"
Please tell me of the books you have written.
your point is worthless unless you can show 1/2 a book worth of Computer security related info.
sorry but again this is Typical FUD.
sense when do the # of books a person has written on a subject the only way they would have an opinion on a subject?
#4 "rhetorical"
"computer security is definitely still a "hot topic." But why are we spending all this time and money and still having problems?
Yes it is a hot topic but, although it is a rhetorical question let me answer that we are spending all this time and money into ComSec because nothing is fool, or for that matter crack, proof."
ok so I don't understand why his question is "rhetorical" definitions:
according to definition 1, his sentence is not rhetorical as it is not
The thing is, all he proposes are subjective solutions to the problems, something which he clearly states repeatedly.
Furthermore its on HIS website on which he publishes HIS opinions.
These are all real solutions which have been proven time and time again. (which is why its not a top 5 or top 10 such as you would find on zdnet or cnet, which are amazingly factually flawed it rags.)
The reason I say proven repeatedly is that these are methodologies which are in effect in all design & engineering practice.
This I feel is also a real issue in a Globalized Corporate economy where arbitrary invisible entities are considered equal to citizens in the judiciary of most countries.
thanks for the reference
dood
you obviously didn't read it cause he said the SAME things.
Everyday I drive by useless Mc Mansions and new mall developments destroying forests and natural clearings and creating more detritus, consuming more energy per person to keep up than is warranted only to serve the vanity of some insecure, empty and shallow human shells.
why should other planets be made to pay for the retardation of the human species?
fools.
We never learn.
A little bluetooth camera that connects to sony cell phones which can then send the image to others, and moves by itself, would make much more sense to use for that journalist in Gaza getting the beat down from Israeli military goons, or the guy watching some random LA cops use some black guy as a punching bag?
