Last time I checked, NT 4 did not have USB support, a journaling file system, or SMP support that is head and shoulders above Linux. And I personally feel that Linuxconf knocks the socks off the cruddy NT admin tools. Take a look at the *rate of development* on the two platforms, too. Even if the current rate of Linux development only stays steady, where will it be in 2 years? Just a thought.
ViaVoice isn't on the distribution CD. The press release says its going to be on the separate Applications CD. This is usually included in the boxed sets you see.
Online chat with Bob Young on Monday afternoon

RedHat 6.0 is Out

Bob Young will be attending an online chat on Abc News's website (abcnews.com) today at 2:00PM EST(?). The URL they give is: http://chat.abcnews.go.com/chat/chat.dll?room =abc_bobyoung Just thought you might be interested, you can go ask him a bunch of questions about 6.0.
Well, for one, I'm not 14 years old, actually i'm a full-blown adult. And according to Katz, the kid was present when they went through his files. It wasn't like some covert raid. He's 14 for cripes sake, does he really need the same privacy that an adult needs? Either you are a terrible parent or you've never raised children. If these 2 kids' parent had gone "fascist" and raided their bomb factory, there'd be 15 teenagers still alive today in my hometown. Think about that.
A 14-yr. old in Maine was mentioned, whose parents inspected his files for signs of "anti-social behavior"! I say why not, maybe if more parents actually *paid attention* to their kids and *kept tabs* on what they were up to, we might have fewer problems.
KDE is a complete, integrated user environment. It comes with its own window manager, KFM. I believe Window Maker, another window manager, is at least partly KDE "compliant", meaning it can be used instead of KFM. KDE also has a nice file manager and all the little apps that GUI users rely upon. KDE uses the Qt widget set.
GNOME is a more decentralized, but still complete, user environment. You have to choose which window manager you want, and there are several which have been made GNOME compliant, meaning they work trasparently with GNOME's desktop management features. GNOME also has a nice file manager as well, plus a bunch of nice apps. GNOME uses the Gtk+ widget set.
So you can see, these 2 desktop environments compete directly with each other.
As stated above, the Linux documentation tends to be "expert friendly". Maybe what we need is alternative docs for people just learning Linux, like a Cliff Notes version of the HOWTO's. Is anyone else interested in helping out? Obviously this would be too much for one person to undertake, but a small group could really make a difference.
With all my friends now starting to use Linux, I wish I could just give the the URL for such a resource.
Quick! Name a publishing company that saw its profits increase when they started giving away electronic copies of their titles...
Really, folks, I dont see why "open sourcing" books is desirable on the same level as open sourcing software. Its two completely different things.
O'Reilly is in the business to to publish books and make money. Giving out free electronic copies of their titles is antithetical to the latter of these. When someone comes around who can publish better books and give them away for free, then I guess O'Reilly's day will be over.
PS: It really bugs me when people complain about O'Reilly "leeching" off of Open Source projects by asking $$$ for their books. If these people had written good documentation to begin with, no one would want these books!
Yes, of course Somalia, Grenada, Beruit, Panama, they were all about oil.
And I'd like to know what TV you're refering to. Mine won't SHUT UP about the possibility of ground troops. I think the only one who DOESN'T see it coming is Clinton. Typical.
Finally someone who knows what he's talking about.
Unfortunately this discussion has basically been spammed and slammed by a bunch of individuals who don't know what the hell they're talking about. It's oh so trendy these days to snipe at the US for basically trying to use their power to help improve the world. (Clinton's bumblimgs aside).
We need to listen to this guy. He knows what the score is. He's keeping it real.
Oh yes. When I think "Albania", I think "money and power". Not. Please explain to me how money and power are the driving forces in NATO's war. I don't think you can. I think Clinton was worried about becoming the president who stood by while Kosovo "happened".
And yes, there are other regions of the world which are as bad as Kosovo. So what! NATO is having enough trouble handling *one* of them, I hpe you're not suggesting we jaunt off to Sierra Leone now too!
Just because Clinton has clumsy foreign policy practices doesn't mean he's engaged in some sinister geo-political powerplay in Serbia and Albania.
I think this sounds very sensible. We'll have to see if it works in practice;) One suggestion: you may have made the criteria a little too narrow. I think the closer you come to letting everyone moderate, the more the moderation will reflect the views of the/. community. Or maybe I'm missing the point? Maybe the idea is to let the "wise elders" run everything. I think this approach would have its own benefits, too.
Yeah, we are bullying Serbia. What do we want from them? To stop persecuting the Kosovar Albanians. So we're bullying a bully, because force is the only thing he'll understand.
I don't care for the way Clinton and the other NATO leaders are executing the war either. I guess that's the price you pay for living in a society where civilians, not the military, call the shots. But I think the ideas behind our actions are well meaning, at least.
I'm not really sure why you are opposed. I'm not saying there *aren't* legit reasons to be opposed, but you just seem to be saying that it's too easy or something.
The interview said Kerschner "prodded" Ford to adlib,
not that Kershner made it up himself.

How long will it be before people start selling off their slashdot accounts for hard cash? Hoe much is it worth to people to have...
*A popular, cool username
*An oldtimer's low account id number
*An account with a history of positively moderated posts
Just a thought.
Just because something doesn't display HUMAN qualities doesn't mean its not INTELLIGENT!
(Why am I writing in CAPS?!)
In the time it took you to post your complaint about NY Times logins, you could have simply done the annoying registration...
:P :P
And you weren't first post, either

I have a question about Rob's post. What is apt
and why do I want it? Debian is generating
tremendous buzz recently, and I am wondering why...
Wow. This is really great news! ATI missed out,
I almost bought one of their TV cards a few months
ago, until I learned they were withholding specs.
I might actually reconsider my decision in light of
their reversal...
Actually, yes it is ;)
Jeez, aren't we being a little dramatic here? And do you really believe Greenspan is responsible for urban decay? I don't see the logic, I'm sorry...
Low inflation + low unemployment != urban decay
"Isn't it always about oil?"
Yes, of course Somalia, Grenada, Beruit, Panama, they were all about oil.

Does that count as a "real American city"?

;)
"I do wish Greenspan worried less about inflation and more about jobs."
Last I check, enemployment was at a 29-year low in the States.
"what's so great about the constitution?"
Uhh, besides being the basis for most other western governments for the last 200 years, nothing, I guess.
