one of the ongoing jokes i have with my roommates is the depiction of computer usage in tv/movies. the phrase oft-used is "computer, tell me what i need to know!"

Being surrounded by a more technologically advanced crowd (here on /., at uni, etc), I sometimes forget that people use computers in this manner and think it will actually work. I suppose the author would type "directions restaurant" and expect to find directions to a restaurant he was thinking of at the time.

Doesn't google have "search tips" too?

for me, it's not the speed of the downloading that matters, its that (under win2k at work with acrobat reader in mz firebird) acrobat reader takes about 6-8 seconds to load before it starts loading the document.. you know, that screen that comes up telling you it's loading. it's totally awful to be going through pages fast then have to sit there and wait for the reader to load when that takes longer than getting what you want to read!

html is just plain faster, no stupid plugins needed for that.

Where exactly is this company coming up with its ratings for "defects" in code... If it's talking about small bugs like bad pointer allocation or something like, as in things that can be easily squashed in a later revision (things that are easier for the open source model to fix), then I would barely consider them defects.

I just don't see how this code analysis process works. Seems like random PR talk to me.

One other interesting thing... notice how Intel isn't bringing up a libel charge, which means they're quietly not bothering to claim that what he said in the disputed e-mail wasn't true?

IANAL, but isn't libel only for things in the public domain? Since the emails were only sent to Intel employees, and not the general public, I don't think Intel has any grounds to sue on libel or slander.

Modern football games are just eye candy and very confusing to me. With the Intellivision you had to understand plays and you could enter them privately without the other guy seeing them on the screen. If someone can see what you are about to run, what's the point?

When was the last time you played a "modern" football game? The Madden series allows you to choose from 9 plays on the screen at once, without revealing what you called. The NFL2k series allowed you to pick your play, make it look like you were still picking your play, and you could even change formations. You could pick a deep pass and make it look like you were sending out the field goal squad.

With the level of competition I play at up at school, you have to understand the plays as well, or it's going to end up in a turnover. Modern football games are almost simulations nowadays, far more than the "glory days" of Intellivision football.

Shouldn't you be careful going about such a practice? I had an idea of sharing popular named music (such as Metallica, etc) that all the content of the file would be would be "f the RIAA" repeated, but my senses got the better of me.

Who has the burden of proof in this example, is it the RIAA proving that the file contains what it is named, or is it you proving the file DOES NOT contain what it is named. I would assume the RIAA would simply attempt to burn you at the stake for even having a similarly named file, and that they would disregard the contents.

actually from what i've gathered, OpenMG Jukebox does not take control of your collection at all.. I have it installed to transfer music to my NetMD player. It wants you to "import" your mp3s to its database and convert it to ATRAC3 (with some silly DRM policy on it). From what i've gathered on it, you can import the same mp3 file as many times as you want, thus giving you unlimted check out/check ins.

btw, i'm planning on getting that 10.4" super portable sony vaio tonight, as a matter of fact. this doesn't bother me at all, because as soon as I bring it home I plan on wiping everything it came with and putting XPPro/Red Hat on it, therefore not having to worry about any of this sillyness.
