So much for Vista's "No animal testing" cruelty free status.

The main problem I see with my preferred brand of Unix on the desktop is I have to run it on a Mac to get the pretty widgets/gadgets.

Give me OS X/ X86 or I'm gonna club this here baby seal! .app bundles are cool. code/library/config/resources scattered all over the hard drive is not..

Not having to muck around with getting X11 is cool. Hats off to folks like Knoppix who manage to make a setup that works out of the box with most systems..

Printing.. Printing needs to get sorted out a bit better. Too many people have problems printing or find themselves buying a postscript printer just to have it work somewhat well.

Configuration: Preference panels to hande configuration are nice. editing config files with vi/emacs/joe/etc is not all that nice. It's nice to be able to do either, though..

I honestly don't really care how it all works underneath, just that it does.

Simple UI's.. So many group are making desktop environmentst that look like and work like windows.

Simple is good. Windows UI is only simple because you use it for years..

You are presuming that thieves are computer techs.

Non techie types don't think of this stuff. The thief usually sells it for cash quickly either to a fence who resells or to a waiting customer.

In the past, I've seen laptops come into the shop for upgrades or to replace that ubiquitous lost battery charger that are obviously stolen or to wipe and reinstall.

Netscape was pretty stable for me under 2.0.x. Once I switched over to 2.2.x it got so unstable I had to pitch it.

I've since switched to using VMware+NT+IE5 for web browsing and configured my linux desktop system for IP Masquerade.

  12. Re:RH6 Instability - change your window manager + on On Red Hat Bashing... · · Score: 1

When I upgraded from Starbuck, GNOME would freeze everything (not just X) every couple of days.

I am running 5.9 and have been since shortly after it was publicly available. With as much updating as I've done to this system, I am not even considering an update to 6.0.

The window manager freezing problem wasn't an X or gnome problem for me. It went away for me when I compiled and installed a different Window Manager(WindowMaker).

This also happened under RH 5.2 here at work, where they're paying me way too much money to browse /.

If anything I'm more inclined to yearn for a distribution modelled more closely on Free/NetBSD. Cvsup, 'make world'.

FreeBSD and NetBSD have that part right. Too bad it's not friendly to companies who like quarterly upgrade CDROM sales to those without a fast net.link or the patience/time to download it.
