While as a conservative, I have been disgusted by the porkbarrel spending by my own party, the only reason that Clinton was able to keep his spending so low was:
1) Republicans controlled the congress and their porkbarrel agendas were different from the Clintons porkbarrel agendas.
2) Most of the speding cuts by the Clinton administration were in defense. If fact, after crowing about how "the era of big government is over" and bragging on how many government jobs were cut during the Clinton administration, it turns out that ALL of the job cuts were defense related. In fact, the rest of government was growing.
So yes, it IS the Dems who are addicted to spending. As are the Republicans. That is why we need a president who is not afraid to veto spending bills. That's why we need Mitt Romney in the White House.
My bigest fear with hardware encrypted laptop drives:
User: I forgot my password to my laptop. Can you reset it? Tech Support: Sorry, the encryption is set at the disk level. You have lost all of your files. IT Manager: Too many users are losing their encryption password. We will now have a default password that will be the same for all users.
A couple of corrections... [Christianity] teaches that God the Father and God the Son (Jesus) are one and the same person - Mormonism denies this
Depending on how you want to define the Trinity, I'm pretty sure many Christians would have a problem with the idea that they are the same "person." But you are correct in that Mormonism holds that God the Father and God the Son (Jesus Christ) are two separate individuals.
Christianity teaches that Satan is a fallen creation of God- Mormonism teaches that Satan is equal with Christ- his brother
Mormonism does NOT teach that Satan is equal with Christ. It does teach that we are all spirit brothers and sisters, as all of our spirits were created by God. Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of the world who atoned for our sins and is a member of the Godhead. Satan is a fallen angel who stands in eternal opposition to God. I'll give you one point on the brother part, but minus a infinite number of points on the "equal" garbage.
Christianity teaches that Christ though fully God became man incarnate- Mormonism teaches that Christ came to be as the result of an incestuous relationship between God and Mary (not my words- a leader of the mormon churches words)
Absolute total utter BS!
Mormonism doesn't teach that, and I would love to see your "leader of the mormon churches words." I can guarantee you that you there isn't a single quote out there from a Mormon leader.
I'm not doubting your motives. You probably honestly believe the anti-mormon propaganda that your have read. Just realize the method that they use: For every truth add in a couple of lies for good measure. Good enough to confuse those who don't know the difference. It worked on you.
We know from experience that nearly EVERY story in this months issue will eventually be a Slashdot article. Why don't we save time by posting a default wired link at the beginning of each month, instead of slowly trickling out one story each day?
Yes, there is a scale for you to weigh your tomatoes. But there is also a scale built into the bagging tray. That way you don't scan a can of cat food and bag a Filet Mignon.
It's not the time shifting per se that is illegal. It is the fact that unless the show is being uploaded by the copyright owner (studio/network/etc) you would be getting the show from someone who had no right to distribute it. Yes, you can legally record it, store it, watch it as many times as you want, IF you are getting it from someone who has the right to distribute it.
And as a side note, if you are too stupid to realize downloading what you can legally record is NOT piracy, then you have some serious mental issues.
But just because the networks are "freely" distributing the product over the airwaves doesn't give someone else the right to distribute it, nor does it give you the right to download it from anyone that doesn't have distribution rights.
Whether or not it is illegal for you to download it, it IS illegal for the person(s) uploading it to provide the content.
Watching the show isn't illegal. Recording the show isn't illegal.
The difference between this and personal timeshifting is where you got the content. Did the person you received the file from have the right to distribute the file?
The election yesterday was my third experience with the new-improved voting machines. And for the third time, I walked out of the booth wondering if my vote would really be counted.
After tapping my choices with a stylus -not really that easy for a left-handed-choice-tapper on a right-handed machine, I had to re-do a lot of them- I pressed the vote button. And the screen flashed something like "vote recorded" and then it went blank.
There was nothing to drop in a ballot box, nothing to show me that the machine was really hooked to anything, and of course, nothing that anybody could re-count if there was a question of fraud.
The friendly octogenarian on duty assured my that the it was all run by computer and that we didn't need a paper trail, since they could recount the computer records if they needed to do a recount. And since it is impossible for hard drives to die and memory chips to fail...
Yeah, it probably worked this time but the empty feeling I had as I walked out of the polling station left me strangly envious of those days when I could look at my punch card to make sure that none of the chads were hanging.
Yes they were able to get the required information from the library, but the only way to confirm that the data was accurate was to compare it to a known "up-to-date" source.
If I used the encyclopedia that was available in my High School library (in 1983) I would have learned that because of the recent Sputnik launch that man would someday walk on the moon.
Seriously, I find it very hard to believe that a normal person would be able to pay attention to a show projected on their windshield, and still be fully aware to what is happening outside.
1) The display was projected as if it were outside. 2) Like I said before, it is very hard to let facts or evidence change pre-concieved opinions. They did the tests and it does make sense when you realize that many accidents happen because the driver is not looking at the road in front of them.
And frankly, how could they possibly be able to test that properly? Easy, have people drive with it on and with it off. See who hits more of the pop-up items on the test course.
I wish I could find a copy of the article, but about 25 years ago, Popular Science reported about a company that was developing a heads-up style television display for a car. It projected a large television image on the windshield that the driver would be able to see as if it were floating several feet ahead of vehicle.
"Obviously" such a device would be a traffic hazard, right? It turns out that in the testing that they did, the drivers using the HUD to watch TV while driving performed BETTER than they did when not watching. Especially in instances where they needed to avoid a sudden danger. It turns out that having the TV on meant that the driver kept their eyes on the road more consistantly, and were able to respond faster.
The company was never able to bring it to market, because their legal department knew that they could never win any lawsuit. They knew that most people, including juries, don't let facts get in the way of pre-conceived opinions.
Probably because they have the highest per-household computer ownership in the country.
Some of the demographic groups that are typically reluctant to purchase computers (ie, senior citizens) do have computers in Utah because they have been using them for years to do genealogy research.
Shadow Puppets (hardcover) by Orson Scott Card is priced on Amazon for USD$18.15 Electronic version USD$25.95 (M$Reader and Adobe)
With the e-version the pubisher has no printing costs, no binding costs, virtualy no shipping costs, no warehousing fees, no sales clerks.
Like most everyone, I prefer my books on paper, but there are times where an e-book version would be convenient. But I am not going to pay 4 times the paperback price for the experience.
I always find it interesting that Card is bashed by both sides of issues. The gay-rights groups hate him because of his moral stance he has taken against homosexual behavior. (See this article ) And then you get comments like these who think there is to much homosexuality in his books.
There are those who complain that his books are too "preachy" and also there are those (mostly "orthodox" Mormons) who complain that his books should bear a stronger witness of his faith.
My guess is that the "anonymous coward" who placed this post is looking a little too hard for homosexual references. He can probably find them in the phonebook if he looks hard enough!

Anybody remember a parody song (no, not "Star Trekkin) about Scotty?
Some of the lyrics included: (sung to the tune of Venus)
It's Scotty,
Yeah baby, it's Scotty
Mars and Venus
Laser fire
At his desire.
He's a pistol
With his little
Dilithium crystal...
I would love to be able to find the orignal.

Until you're caught... Ever notice the little camera thingy's on the ceiling?
No, Guilty only when proven guilty. The clerk didn't necessarily assume anything before picking up the backpack. He just followed standard procedure.
Saying that checking the product is assuming guilt is like saying the doctor is assuming you are sick when he takes your temperature.

Having a non-smoking section in an encosed restaurant is a lot like having a no-peeing section in the swimming pool.
Gee, I tried typing in Scotland and map.
not a single one on the first page was a site selling me a map.
Try using what I used. It's called GOOGLE

It used to crack me up when I was on the Atkins Diet. People would come up to me and say "Wow, you've lost weight. How did you do it."
When I told them that I was on the Atkins plan, the first response was always the same:
"Oh, that doesn't work."
It's all about the price.
