My Dad still uses his 386 DX 40 Clone daily. He doesn't see a reason to upgrade, he's got AmiPro, XTree Gold, Windows for Workgroup 3.11, and Quicken. I mean what beats that;). It's a cyrix chip using 1 hard drive and 1 hard card (450 MB Hard Drive, and 105 MB Hard Card.) 16 MB of Ram (yes they made 386's that could handle that much), Diamond video card (not sure which model), Sound Blaster Pro.. I've never had a single problem with it..
Oh and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 has Norton Desktop running on top of it.. now that's an OS!
The only thing we've had to replace was a keyboard in it's entire lifespan. It was purchased new from Micron computes a LONG time ago. I don't even recall the year, but it was a whopping 3k out of pocket.
You've got your facts half right. Novell is the company that spawned SCO (by licensing Unix to them), however Novell is hardly a demon. Novell bailed out the BSDs ages ago when AT&T was suing them for Unix. Novell purchased Unix from AT&T and dropped all lawsuits. Novell tried to stop SCO's push by countersuing them (with a claim that Novell not SCO owns the rights to enforce Unix IP). I would view Novell as more of a Shield to OSS then a traitor, of course you're welcome to your opinions;)
Oh and as a second note NSS, JFS, and Reiser 4 look very promising to me. I can't wait to try them.
I know it's not OSS, but I think people should really checkout Novell Groupwise as a replacement for Microsoft Exchange.
It supports integration with Active Directory (if you need it), LDAP authentication, IMAP, has full collaboration calendaring support. A webaccess frontend (IE Hotmail), and starting with Netware 6.5 should have a fully functional Linux and MacOS client. Heck in Netware 6.5 (possibly 7) you can even run the server portions on top of Linux, so you don't even need the Netware Kernel (supported distros as of now are SuSe and RedHat Enterprise Edition).
We use it exclusively and never get hit with the latest virus email scare. Anyways I think it's worth a look at least.
Why, I remember how appalled I was when my friend had an Apple IIgs with 1 MB - 1 megabyte!!! - of RAM, a decade or so ago. What kind of hedonist needs that much? Bah.
He doesn't need 1 MB of Ram!! Please tell me what software and operating system you're using to browse and post on slashdot. It can't be lynx that's far too bloated.
My College Students!! Dear god I hope they're not mine. I would hate to be responsible for that 98 billion dollars. Even the ever popular Mr. Gates would have trouble covering that if it were his kids. I believe that is larger then the Gross National Product of many nations. I mean they might as well do their bankruptcy hearing in the same court immediately after their ruling.
... all data originating from a Microsoft system are, by definition, evil.
Nevermind that "Evil" is a relative term, but I was under the impression that in fact all FreeBSD packets should in fact be "Evil". I mean they have a daemon (albeit a cute one for a mascot). I think they are more then deserving for that fact alone, but hasn't the FreeBSD crowd been the one primarily pushing for this bit to begin with?
"First, Apple continues the wall-of-silence with respect to their repugnant DMCA-based legal action, and there is no reason whatsoever for us to think that they will not undertake similar action in the future. It is regrettable that the DMCA was Apple-sponsored legislation, and it is now time for them to disavow it and promise never to employ it."
I think it's about time for Apple's actions to catch up with them. Frankly, they've made a lot of people mad over the years and it's nice to see a project so politically active. I just hope it doesn't destroy the project in the long run.
"We will repeal state taxes and wasteful state government programs. We will end the collaboration between state and federal law enforcement officials in enforcing unconstitutional laws. We will repeal laws regulating drugs and guns." Excellent plan!! Get rid of the taxes which pay for the social programs, allow free drugs (I'm assuming they don't mean medicinal), and eliminate the laws governing guns. Don't get me wrong, I don't care generally about taking guns away from people, the amount of THC in your favorite smoking products, how much you hate taxes, or if you don't like welfare. However, it doesn't list the scope of repealed laws. I can just imagine the unemployed geeks shooting other unemployed geejs with fully automatic weapons (because the current gun laws are much to strict of course) over their next dose of heroin. Sounds like a great place to live I'm all for it. Oh wait did I just describe Bangkok?
Just remember that Microsoft is just trying to eat into market share. They came in with 0% percent market share so any percentage > zero is an improvement. Each XBox sale is one less sale for their competitors (with the exception of people who own more then one console). Microsoft shouldn't expect to beat Sony, and arguably may have already beaten Nintendo (though Nintendo's primary audience isn't necessarily the XBox's target audience).
If you are unable to find an OSS alternative, and you only have a windows or macintosh environment might i recommend Novell Groupwise 6.0. It's not free, it's not OSS, but it does do everything exchange can do but better, and you won't be giving money to Bill's charity account. (Even though it does support NPR through the Bill and Melinda Gates Fund).

Who are you to judge? Are you so pure that when faced with loss of a job in a country reluctant to hire you wouldn't bow down. What if he has a family to support. I don't know how you can make such a personal attack without knowing someone.
I would tend to disagree with this notion. I have a number of friends who work in this field and they all admire and respect the artistic work Disney has managed over the years. I realize with their corporate environment and family image it is hard for 'certain' artistic expressions to be realized. However, I don't feel that the general world consensus is that they stifle creativity. Rather I would argue that they push creativity within certain parameters.
This comes as quite a shock to me, especially since Intel recently unveiled a chipset supporting Rambus 533. In fact I was under the impression based on reviews I have read that the Pentium 4 only performs to its potential when paired with a 133Mhz FSB and RDRAM 533 based on 1066 spec. Rambus 533 should Offer 4 GB/sec compared to DDR 266 with a 2.3 GB/sec bus. TomsHardware.com did a review of this setup and the Pentium 4 does exhibit a huge increase when paired with the faster Ram technology even compared to DDR 333 spec. A move like this really makes me wonder what is going on behind Intel's closed doors. Without RDRAM they would lose their speed advantage over AMD... time will tell I suppose.
I'm can't believe we are witnessing the end of Sega hardware development. Sega, despite their enemies, has pioneered so many things. The console gaming scene would have been a very different place in their absence. They may have even contributed more than Nintendo, and quite possibly more than Atari. I own a Dreamcast, and I've owned a Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and Sega Saturn. I will miss the Blue Hedgehog very much!
-A toast to never buying any Sony product!!!
Hello! The Sega Dreamcast has an impressive library, impressive addons, loads of third party support, and NETBSD FOR GOD'S SAKE!! What the heck are you talking about !!!

At least the movie was technically accurate. I mean besides gnome it still had a lot going for it. The interface Ryan Phillipe was programming was a translator for the stream, such a translator ( to be understood by cell phones, and computers) would have to be coded in java, and of course it was! Amazing and a huge step forward in technically accurate computer movies.

I thought that was "Where there's a whip there's a way!"
Some may recognize that from the Warner Brother's Lord of the Rings Cartoon rendition.

It is called the Rez and it is a Japanese game for the play station.
You almost had it. It is called Rez not the Rez, and it is a Japanese game for the Sony Playstation *AND* Sega Dreamcast.
