What to do about the know nots? I dont know, I have enuff or a time keeping up myself. I find that I too must hone in on a little sector of MIS and be that best I can in my chosen space.

It is all about service not software. A SOHO can buy NT, W2K, or Linux and to him it is just as usefull as a brick. Even the magic outta the box solutions take some work to intergrate. The person that can set those systems up and make them jump and do tricks for them is were the value is. It is really the customers choice as to what type of license his software is under and the fact they have a choice at all. To most I think, the license is just an after thought. They just want to get their work done and are happy to pay so long as it does not cut into the bottom line.

Artists should make money from concerts, product endorsements and licensing the music for Ad's and Movies not royalities. You are telling me that people hearing the Songs from a place other then ten places I hear it everyday is hurting your bottom line ? Get real, go cry to your millionaire buddies because most pay check to pay check people don't give a rat ass about you losing out on another million. Most Artist, like people to hear their music, I would hope that is why they got in to business. But, "The Music Industry" has nothing to do with Art or Talent, it is all Marketing and Exploitation, and It alway has been. The World will be a better place when They are gone or have no one left to exploit. A reality that I am sure they see, understand and are scared to death of.

One more about EULA's. Do we remember the big MS refund day. MSFT did not honor their own EULA, with respect to the return of its software. IANAL, but this seem to call the whole EULA thing into questions, How can a company selectively inforce an EULA, it must be either all valid or all invalid. You can't have it both ways. I think some one should call MSFT on that one, and get all MSFT's EULA's regarding OS's rendered invalid. This might open the door to all kinds of fun.

One of the HUGE problems with all of this is MSFT ships products with the permission to low, wide open in fact. Do an Install of NT 4.0, and check it out. Same thing with Outlook wide open. While it is understandable why they did this, it is also the cause of all of these problems. I would wadger, that if they shiped products all locked down like some of the BSD's, you would have a smarter group of NT admins and MS enduses. They would have to go in and make the changes to their systems, and might in fact, understand the risk involved with that choice.

Sending out I LOVE YOU attachments is really the users fault, they and thier employers should be held accountable. I bet that would fix the problem real quick. This might sound extream, but
if you kill someone on accident, it is still manslaughter. So if you take out someone's mail server on accident, it is still a DOS attack.

Use Speed Razor Mach III or lastest release with DPS PVR cards, The system Duel PII 450 or as fast as you can get running NT 4.0 Sp4. You will need other systems for doing Animations and the like, or photoshop work. It does not hurt to have an offline workstation with Speed Razor to work out edits and previews. Of course you need a high speed network and Lots of VTR and Such, this is the expensive part.

This is much better solution that an Avid. The learning curve for any NLE package is steep, but once you are versed the render time is the only limit to what you can do.
