  1. Re:NT memory leaks? or application memory leaks? on Linux vs. NT Reliability · · Score: 1

You can Start and Stop the Web publishing service (aka IIS) now with NT4. The problem is that this does not always fix the problem, I have seen overflow attacks that just make the service fail, it just wont serve up pages. No stopping of the service at all. You have to make a monitor do a GET on the server to make sure it is Ok and if not stop the service and see if that fixes the problem.

I have notice other problems with NT Admins installling software and NOT rebooting, forgetting about it and NOT keeping a server log book. Then when NT does crash they restart it only to BSOD because of some Fuped program they never finished installing. So alot of NT problems come from bad administartion. On NT it is also a bitch to run more then one BIG service on at a time. You need to parcel out File,Print,Web, Email and SQL. Why you say ? well you need to reboot all the time to install software and you can't very well take down your whole company to do it, this is just one reason there are many others.

We have not even begun to talk about disaster recovery on NT. I would like to hear more on that topic. :)

Agreed, not yet anyway. I am not one to give the FEDs any more fuel, they are already looking for ways to control the net. But I think the last few weeks have scared them even more in to understanding how important computer skills are and will be in the 2k's. People who don't know how to drive should stay off the road. Most people feel that way.

The Internet is being marketed like eye candy and everyone I repeat EVERYONE wants everyone to get on the "NET". These newbies and MSCE dime a dozen sys admins are setting up the whole net for a big crash. There is NOT WAY to protect the stuipd and lazy from crackers. Everyday there is more fresh meat for the crackers to exploit. Secure 3 systems and 20 more hit the net for the first time. I have scanned my subnet on RR and I have found people with their systems wide OPEN, I could have printed on their printers for christs sake.

This issue is about locking down systems connected to the net. That is where the whole problem started. The best admin can't be expected to keep up with all exploits on all of his systems all the time, but he should have this Internet pointed systems LOCK DOWN and a good firewalling/auditing plan in place to help him out.

If we can't get admins with big pipes and big iron to keep the lid on their systems how in the world do you think Joe PIII 750 with a DSL is going to fare ?

A persistant Internet connection is not a toy. People should have to take a class before they
are giving such a powerfull weapon. People have had to take driving tests for years and everyone is better off for it. I wager that I could cause more damage with my computer then with any type of moter vehical any day, of course nobody would get killed, but we seem to have even put a price tag on that as well.

    1. Copy user files to a network drive, if networking is still running
    2. GHOST
    3. Copy user files back
    4. Collect pay check

This is why I GHOST every machine before I redeploy it. The same thing can happen to NT
that is why you NEVER install unneeded software
on a production machine. And if you need to install new software you should try it on ONE server first and use it for about a week or so
and test the hell out of it, this included Hotfixes and Service Packs. This brings up the
fact that you need to firewall an NT network big time. If by act of God MSFT does release a Hotfix for a crack I'll be damed If I will install it on more then one machine to test it. Restoring an NTFS file system ACL's is a ROYAL pain in the ASS.
