  1. new energy source on Hydrogen Micro Turbine Only 4mm In Diameter · · Score: 1

    >Hydrogen technology doesn't create any new energy reserves, it simply allows us to store some of our energy reserves in a different (H2) and potentially differently-useful form.

    Unless, of course, we find a natural source of anti-protons. Which is, I must confess, very unlikely :-)

  2. The Standard Model and the Linux kernel on Neutrinos, Muons and the Standard Model · · Score: 2, Interesting

    It is not the first time that the Standard modell has been modified.

    For example in the begining there has been only
    one generation of quarks and leptons.
    (namely: up and down) But on electron collision experiments showed that there must be new generations: (now called
    strange - charmed and beauty - truth.)

    Until 1995, where experimental evidence was found, the truth quark was only a postulate based on symmetry considerations.

    The same applies to symmetry conservation. For a long time CP (Charge conjugation with Parity) was considered conserved. But an experiment on T (Time inversion) violation showed if CPT was to be conserved, CP must be violated. Again the standard model had to be adabted.

    And at the CERN (Eruopean Nuclear Research Center) in Geneva they believe, that they have fond some evidence for the so called Higgs particle, which is the cause for the mass of particles. A proof for the Higgs particle would be an enhancement for the Standard Model

    Those examples show that the Standard Model of Particles and Interactions is not a static one.
    It is almost like the linux kernel - if you permit this comparision - people send in patches.
    If a patch is useful it will be released for the masses :-)

    Maybe we are entering a odd release stage now :-)

    I think this could give a definite proof if there
    has been life on mars (and I am speaking here about bacteria).

    If there once was life on mars, there is strong evidence, that life is more likely on other planets than we have ever thought. This would lead to the question whether life formed itself on earth or whether it was sort of planted by impacts of comets.

    The only hints so far have come from meteorits which have been found on earth - but there is more speculation than hard evidence.

    On the moon we saw, that it contained no life. The mars is different in this respect - it has an atmosphere. An atmosphere is a necessity for life, because it filters the hard cosmic radiation.

  4. Re:Perpetual Motion!!!! on Body Powered Batteries -- Thermoelectrics · · Score: 1

    The Energy you can gain is rather small.

    With the 2nd law of Thermodynamics you get the Carnot-Effiency which is:
    e = 1 - Tc/Th
    which is for normal operating Temperatures:
    Tc=300 K (in Kelvin)
    Th=340 K
    e = 0.12

    Keep in mind that this is the maximum theoretical efficency of a device like this.

    If you take 1/10th of this value you get an effiency of 0.01. Multiplied with an average power consumption of the CPU of 60 W you get an power output of 0.6 W.

    If I look at the power consumption of a typical CPU Fan (=3.5 W), I doubt that you can do anything usefull with this.

    Calling a ionizing radiation a heat source is a bit misleading.

    I doubt that those energy cells use the heat created by the impact of He(2+) ions (alpha particles) on a target.

    Instead I assume that they directly use the ionisation created in some kind of semiconductor or other type of multi-material-junction.

  6. A few hints for Token Ring Troubleshooting on Linux Token Ring Support Bringing Down Corporate Nets? · · Score: 5, Informative

    What I see here is that a lot of People no longer have a clue about Token ring - am I getting realy old (I am 25) ?

    This is generally bad, because TR is realy a cool Technology (except that it was always to expensive and proprietary)

    But superior technology was never the point.
    (see also: Donalds Becker s comment on NE2000 clones)

    The Network card is not the only possible error source. Token Ring is an active Network, where a lot of the logic is within the NIC and the Cabling (e.g. M(S)AU = Multi Station access unit)

    All Stations are assembled in a physical double ring. Even though the Cabling is a star topology.

    If you connect your station to a MAU (= TR hub)
    your plug is connected to the MAU, but you are not yet connected to the ring. If you turn on your computer, the network driver opens a relay in the MAU (signaled via the adabter cable) to switch you into the ring.
    If you turn off the computer you get discinnected.

    All data on the ring passes all the NICs in the ring (exception: Early Token Release). The NC acts as a Bridge (it amplifies the signal to the next ring segment).

    Since the unamplified distance between to NCs is limited this can lead to the "Token Ring Sleeps at Night" Problem, where the token Ring refused to work at night (simply because too many employes turn off there PC after work)

    This can simply be overcome by replacing passive MAUs with active TR Switches.

    One should also have in mind, that the cable to the network card is a part of the ring after activation of the card. A faulty cable can disturbe the ring (even though it should be automaticaly removed from the ring)

    I would try your laptop directly on a TR switch.
    Thís way you can eliminate driver/TR component interaction (a driver which agressivly tries to connect to a ring with a faulty cable)

    I personaly implemented many Linux Servers with linux and never had problems with disturbing ring operation. I used IBM and Olicom Adabters and they always worked well.
