WHAT? I missed it again!? Shit. I won the Southern California regionals and I was going to compete...but if they have highlights that means it's all over. Fuck.
After all the complaints for charging $129 for Jaguar, maybe Apple could do something like this for regular Mac OS X? Somehow I doubt they will do that though.
Yeah, eBay is probably the easiest way to go. I really doubt you'll find one from a mac shop that has converted to rack mounts. Another place you might try is a swap meet or yard sale. I once bought a supposedly dead iMac for $10 at a swap meet, and the only problem it had was a fried hard drive. A G4 that has some fatal problem but an undamaged case could probably be gotten for not too much in a similar situation.
To answer your quesition, I have no idea where you can get one *cheaply*. However, you should be able to order one at any Apple Authorized Service Center (AASC). Well, not any, but if you can find one that is cool, they'll order you a chassis/case assembly. Their cost will range from $117 for an early PCI Graphics G4 all the way up to $285.30 for a QuickSilver. (The chassis of the currently available G4s is $247.50). However, AASC markup will often drive that price much higher. Otherwise, you can just try eBay; they come up for auction there quite often.
The biggest problem with not being able to boot into OS 9 is for diagnosing problems. If the hard drive is hosed (can't be booted from) and I want to run tools on it, I'll boot from an OS 9 CD. If I can't do that, what the hell am I going to do? Boot from an OS X CD that has carbon/cocoa utilities on it? Yeah right, OS X takes up most of the 650MB all by itself. (BTW, Drive X sucks)
For this reason, I don't think Apple will *keep* new machines from booting into OS 9. They may de-bundle OS 9, so it doesn't come with the machine. But sure as hell hope they let it boot into OS 9.
Of course, I could just pull the hard drive out and pop it into an older machine to run utilites... =P

So the real question is, have you actually had to do a repair on an eMac yet?
I too am a certified AST, and I have replaced the Display/Analog assembly in one of those monsters. The 'e' stands for evil, in case anyone was wondering.
The neat thing about eMacs is the shell. You can wear it and feel just like Dark Helmet from SpaceBalls.

Looks like the quake knocked an "o" from "too" into "lose" even if you aren't in the bayarea. Unless you are in the bayarea, in which case it still knocked it around.
And yes, bayarea is one word. At least it's often pronounced that way by the native population. =)
The logo in the top left corner of that page is the Geisel Library, which is argueably UCSD's most prominant landmark. It is named after Theodore and Audrey Geisel, residents of San Diego (more accurately I think Coronado). You might remember Ted as Dr. Seuss.
I think it's safe to say that humans won't be around long enough for us to worry about this problem. The rate of evolution of species will make us into something else looooooong before then. Even if we are around, we will certainly have the technology to provide light and keep the Earth's geothermal reaction going long enough to move the entire planet to orbit another star. Hell, we may even be able to refuel the sun and keep it going for another 13 billion years. Humans have only been around for 100,000 years, and we've come a long way, but it's only just the beginning of our exponential curve upwards. Just hope we don't kill ourselves off first.
As has been said many times already among these responses, there is no reason to use USB 2.0 when FireWire exists. Why would you want to use a technology that will, when it is released, be slightly faster than FireWire has been for over 2 years? FireWire is also much more versatile. FireWire devices can communicate with each other without a PC. And with 1394b coming out *very* soon, there is just no reason to switch from FireWire to USB 2.0.
Now if Intel wasn't pushing USB 2.0 as a replacement for FireWire, I would be all for it. I think it would be great if USB 2.0 replaced USB 1.1. Having digital still cameras with a 480MB connection will make downloading all those images really fast. However, billing USB 2.0 as a replacement for FireWire is just insane. There are already millions of camcorders with built in FireWire, and millions of PCs are shipping with it. FireWire has won the war and it hasn't even started.
Yeah, it's spendy. But if you're going to get a Titanium PowerBook G4, you can afford it. We sell these at my store, they are perfect. Very rugged, space to store all your accessories, and they even have little standoff thingies so that you can prop the PowerBook up and use it right in the case. Beautiful.

Now, what is a wedding? Well, Webster's Dictionary describes a wedding as, "The process of removing weeds from one's garden."
>I was an Apple advocate/zealot for 15 years. Finally in the past year, I saw through the haze and realized I was paying a fortune for Apple hardware and software that was no better than what I could get on the PC side of things.
Ding dong, you're wrong! The hardware on either side is alright (although I really prefer Apple because everything comes from them so there are NEVER conflicts) but the software is where it all is! Windows is SO BAD that I will NEVER buy a PC for anything. I know, Linux and *NIX in general are fantastic, but there are ways to use them on Apple hardware. But there is no solution available for non-Apple hardware that would get me, a home user, to spend a cent on it. So Apple hardware with OS 9 and soon X is all I want.
And the Cinema Display is now $2499, not $4000. And you don't have to buy an Apple display. They aren't forcing you to. I have a 19" Sony and it's great.
East Germany, 1945 - 1989. The STASI (secret police) had almost every single person spying on those around them. If you uttered anything even slightly anti-Communist, even in passing, you would be instantly blacklisted with the possibility of losing your job, your family, or your life. The STASI kept extensive records on everyone, with everything from interecepted mail to DNA samples. Programs like W.A.V.E are the first step. I hope this thing is squashed before it gets too far.

I have a big box of 800k floppies from an old-school Mac... this could come in handy.
