  2. Re:College is not necessarily "career training" on Techies Saying No To College · · Score: 1

I agree with you, I too have my four channels, History, Discovery, A&E, and Animal Planet :)

BUT, I didn't go to college. I think I'm highly sucessful. In an enconomy that said that we wouldn't make more than our parents, I'm making more than both combined. Am I well-rounded? I consider myself so: I play four instruments, am an avid-reader, and I also write essays, music, and program on the side.

College won't create knowledgable people. They have to WANT to learn and be creative. Personally, I think most (not all) people go for the beer and the parties or it's more of a tradition than an endeavour.

    crap crap crap...

If you're going to work, you're there to work and do *your* job. It's good business.

    What's NOT good business?
Hiring & paying more for someone who isn't going to be fully utilized. It's like hiring a sysadmin who knows Unix, NT, Netware, Os/2, and 10 other OS's just to Watch a single NT box.

YES, before I shoot myself in the foot here, it is NICE to have well-rounded individuals. BUT, in the tech field such examples you stated are overkill for at *least* --and I stress-- AT LEAST 50% of the hi-end tech jobs that are available.

I didn't go to college, and I've sucessfully run two business and worked my way up the tech ladder. I'm one stage under management and doubled my salary every two years.

I haven't stopped learning either. I know unix, NT, netware, every flavor of Windows, VB, ASP, Java, and I'm just now learning Delphi.

Face it, college is for doctors. The technology field works far too quickly for such "legacy" educational systems like colleges to be effective. If you speak of necessary "practices" & "theories" that need to be understood, keep in mind that most standard practices & procedures CHANGE in the tech field as fast as the industry moves.

Hands-on training with the products you'll be using and want to know about is the way to go. If you want to learn about philosphy, go to a library.

You're implying that people that didn't go to a higher school of education are more prone to making immoral decisions about technology.

So, college teaches more common sense? Explain sororities.

Morals and good judgement can't be taught in school. It's like music: A large number of the best and creative musicians were self-taught. Not learning in a confine allows you to grow in directions other people cannot.

    ...possibly.

    My theory in a nutshell:

Until the judicial system and government as a whole really understands the technology they are governing, irrational decisions such as this one will continue to occur.

I'd be willing to bet that the Judge presiding over this case was subject to one of two possibilities:

One being, he simply didn't fully understand the concept of linking and made an uneducated judgment.

The second being, he was overwhelmed with technical data to clearly see the simplicity behind it, and fully understand that it's absurd to prohibit such a thing.

Either possibility comes down to the fact that the person responsible for making the decision was not fully understanding the technology and writing it off as "newfangled contraption".

Judgments like these are creating the precident for future wrong doings. The most disturbing fact is that linking is such a basic requirement for the internet.. and such governing bodies don't realize what they're making decisions on.

Anyway, around here there's an empty parking lot directly across from an old Burrough's (calculator) factory. It's now Unisys. But, for some odd reason the parking lot was never used and was chained off after Burrough's went under, and then a mysterious small fenced-off building was built on the lot.
