How many TIME or Newsweek articles are going to give "Southpark" a positive review. Or that can even look around the crass to see the point. Time spends time on stories about "how to spot the next columbine killers" softened so that even gramma can read it. If I'm not mistaken I read the word "butt-fucker" in this last review, which I thought was good (the review, not the word).
I'm gonna see the movie tonight (if I can find some bud....somebody, yea somebody)
Wanna bet? If I produce a song, and I decide that I'm not going to do any live performances, it's pretty much my decision, isn't it. You have no asy in the matter.
Yea, if you want to control(limit) distribution of it. I also noticed you said "produce" which leads to the term producer, in this sense record producer, or perhaps a product. I'm talking about art in the higher sense. If you have a product then you want to make it scarce, hence more valuable. Digital reproduction of sound makes scarcity irrelevant, and in the same repect makes the value of said reproduction move to zero. Not totally b/c there is still "enjoyment" value for me, which will be compensated.
I find it odd that something can be so profound, yet deemed so worthless.
What, like free software?;) Worthless in a purely physical sense. Not, as it were, a meta-physical sense(the enjoyment value). I only think that said value is worth monetary exchange in the extremes,i.e. I REALLY like the music. Otherwise money gains the ability to purchase happiness, which it can't.
what's the artist going to live on, their good looks?
Nope, thier ability to play for people, live. I refuse to, as another poster put-it, "buy yachts for V.P.s" while artists are used and tossed away. They will gain power and stability much like hard-core open source coders do, through the cult of personality that follows them, and just being damn good at what they do.
I think musicians should be paid for performances, with less emphasis on CD sales. If things continue the way they are, this is what will happen.
I totally agree with this. Music is a momentary art. Sure you can record it, but something is always lost in the translation, or mussed up, or faked. To be apprectiated as art (from an artist;) it should be seen/heard live. It's like taking a picture of a painting, is that worth the price of the original?
This would seem to be the artist's decision, not yours.
No, the artist doesn't decide how I experience the art. He (all-inclusive, not sexist) merely creates, you enjoy. "Entitled to be compensated"?!, for what? magnetic images!? is music so difficult to create and scarce that I must cherish each and every moment...and PAY for it?!
I would pay for music, but only great music and even then only to hear it live. Otherwise I would cover the costs of production, but most definitely NOT the price of promotion (the RIAA's excuse for $15 cds). Sorry I guess being a Phish phan has colored me against paying for absolute crap (and helped me to appreciate the nuances of LIVE artistry)
I agree. The thing about it is, even the "widespread commercial successes" are being as blatantly screwed over by record companies as the consumer. Anybody watch VH1's "Behind the Music", probably 75% of the artists lived like kings while they were hot, but quickly realized (after their songs were off the chart) that they DIDN'T OWN A THING. Even thier own effort.
Help to educate consumers. Digital reproduction should be the downfall of anyone who tries to monopolize content. It doesn't cost anything to make, why should I pay anything for it? Paying 15$ for a music cd is almost as ridiculous as 1000$ for a server OS. (Both of which have similar prodcution value, although one has a lot more R&D behind it) It is our duty to fight unjust laws and unjust business practices, if you think a company is abusing you, go guerilla.
Consumers aren't stupid, but they can be duped rather easily. I think all the phase I, phase II stuff is a simple lure 'em in and bash 'em on the head. In phase I everything works fine, you can listen to all your MP3s or whatever on your handy $100 player you just bought ('cause it could play mp3). Then phase II hits (and I think "hit" is right, since it will most likely be a date), an embedded hardware change takes effect, and no more even slightly unpure music gets through. Then you have the player, have to buy music for it, and they win.
Like a bunch of rednecks militias are going to make a whit of a difference if the US (or Canadian) government somehow would turn opressive against their people and get the military to support them. You are so deluded.
Who is that military made of? When does it start to crack? Is it when they are being pelted with sticks and stones or.45s? An armed citizenry is the best defense against a rampaging government (power corrupts, remember?). It is our check against government monopoly, which is the ultimate bad in a "free" situation (market or country). You can round up 5,000 people with no defense, but 100 with guns make headline news. Given the choice (and I am) I choose to not own a gun, but do I think I should have the right to? Most gaddamdefinitely (that's a "yes" for you English as a second langaugers)
Dear AC, What? I can't hear you? Nah, nah, nah I am not listening to you....
I was merely stating that the vast majority of Pro-M$ statements have been made by those who prefer anonyminity (sp) over accountability.
I associate quality posts with consistent user names. For you (plural referring to all AC's) to post a comment, that my experience has proven wrong or one that challenges a belief I have, as an AC lessens it's impact. And on this particular subject, Linux vs. M$, lowers my opinion of that comment to 0 (or -1 as the case may be). (note: this is not to say that I would moderate it down, were I able to do such a thing, but a reflection of my internal processing and assessment of it)

Business is War and the OS of a machine everyone in the world will have is BIG business.
Um, can you say pro-Linux? This is just about as positive as an article can get. Seeing something like this on CNN (with it's brand name) is pretty impressive.
Lots of good points, such as "Likewise, we'll buy commercial offerings when it makes sense to do so -- that is, when a commercial version offers enough additional value over a competing free or open source offering. By the same token, vendors attempting to peddle Linux wares that are of doubtful quality, or that are only as good as open source equivalents, are going to find it very hard to make a dollar. We, the Linux community, win in either case. "
Competition breeds better stuff. Look at nature, look at pro sports, the wide open competitive spirit will result in EXTREMELY good software, especially for those basic, every-one-needs-one apps. The GPL makes it sure that new stuff is better than old stuff, and if it isn't you have NO excuse. Good signs.
It's a spoiler (so if you haven't seen the movie...why are you on/.) but a funny one. Wierd Als been a SW fan since way back, everyone remember "Yoda"? (sung to Lola)
Has Al reached American Icon status yet? He's been around for a good long while now....
We've finally made it to good 3-d 2-d images (Quake being the obvious example). The next step is some type of "actual" 3-d image. The possible uses for this are amazing with as much media as we (U.S) process in this county. How many of you thought "holodeck" about halfway through this story? How about watching and being able to walk around the set? Entertainment seems to be the next step (after we find better ways to kill each other). Looks good, anybody knows where we can see samples?
Hey, maybe if you took the time to register and made some decent posts, YOU could be a moderator. But you hide behind the AC wall and therefore your opinion matters not.
And it wasn't flamebait, I think they'll get a slap on the wrist (albeit a hard one), but not for four years, at which point in time the question will be moot. Why? B/c the next gen. of children know computers and can learn a real OS (like I'm doing right now) as the ultimate form of corporate rebellion. Blah, blah, blah, it's Friday.
Office2000 has a nagware side to it. 50 uses after which it *MUST* be registered to continue working. I'm curious what this does to Office's market share when everyone has to pay for it (every year)
not including the time to fix the problem leading to it! How much time does that take? You copy, paste the very detailed explanation of the BSoD, e-mail to MS and they send you new code within the day. It's really very simple....
Now if I could figure out why NT reboots, inteads of boots, I'd just be happy.
USWest recently lowered their DSL price to $29.95/mo. If you use their ISP it's an additional 17.95/mo. I haven't had a problem and have had the service at two seperate locations, very impressed, 640k down/256k up (Q3 + V3 + P3 + DSL = what's a "sun"). They offer services up to 7mbs for bidness (we're going with 1mbs for $125).
Specificaly your eyes and ears. We're going to have an auction here (U.S) for various parts of the broadcast spectrum, just selling frequencies, strange world, huh?

Take away the difficult installation and you've overcome the biggest hurdle to mass conversions.

Gotta love numbers. I think this puts more a real world spin on the whole thing.
To paraphrase metaphorically....
My New Tech car goes 5000 MPH.
Oh yea, my Free Open car goes 2000 MPH.
But the speed limit is 55.
Yea, but who obeys the speed limit.
O.k, but the ROAD breaks down at about 500 MPH, so where does your car go after that?
And BTW, how often does your car break down? How much did it cost?
..and the final sentence:
I thought everyone flew planes in the real world?
