>>Yep, borrowed from Windows, who in turn borrowed the idea from OS/2.
well considering that Microsoft developed OS/2 they were'nt really borrowing from anywhere
Although it was released by IBM, it was developed by Microsoft as a replacement for DOS but the two companies had major disagreements over what should be included(Microsoft wanted support for networking, IBM didn't) they split an Microsoft started work on Winblows
>>Actually, it's not really the core of Mac OS X. It's a parallel project to the Mac OS X kernel.
Although it may have a parallel development to OSX they are not completely seperate. Darwin will run fine without OSX but OSX is tied to Darwin it IS the core. The entire OS revolves around Darwin and the MAch kernel. Aqua is a pretty GUI so that non-geeks don't have to know they are running a BSD variant or see the terminal.
Various initiatives have alredy been set up by various departments of the government, police, etc.
Recently one was set up specifically to track down the script-kiddies who make ddos attacks
Only problem is they are all seperate unrelated organizations, one large world-wide group would be more effective but is not in place and probably won't be for a while.
Is there any way such racist and derogetory marks can be dealt with
I have seen several of them on the/. boards and even though they are few they affect the rest of the board merely being there.
Perhaps moderators could have a seperate category for (racist/derogatory/) remarks, especially if they are completely out of topic. Keep a track of users(IP addresses since they're all anonymous cowards) whose posts get marked in this way and penalize them in some way.
I do not want to see Pseudo-Reports that support race-supremacy or links to such sites. I came to/. to read and discuss issus that are related to tech, NOT about how one race is evil or should be eliminate, or how whites need to take power back. It saddens and disturbs me that even such great boards as/. have to deal with exceedingly off-topic derogatory remarks.
>In fact before Apple released their comment about DVD-burners for Mac, Pioneer had released news of their CD-RW/DVD-? (forget which recordable format for DVD they used)... Once people start using those combo recordable drives on PC Apple will loose any possible advantage there...
The pioneer drive was developed specifically to put into the new G4 Towers. It was a joint development between Pioneer and Apple. It has been licensed to Apple and probably won't appear in PeeCees until another manufacturer makes them
Seems to me that DirecTV is taking the stance that more is better. Since more channels can be broadcast at a lower definition, they might theorize that they could cram more channels in their service and thus entice more users with obscure channels (Competitive Icky Poo TV anyone?).
However, they could also use this in a beneficial way. I am not really sure on how their system works but if the system can affect how a single decoder receives the channels it could allow the user to have more control over their content. More channels at a lower definition, or less at a higer definition; or maybe a mix, pick the few you want in HDTV and leave the rest at standard definition.
What all comes out of it really depends on how they use this system as it could be either benificial or harmful to the viewer's experience. Having the choice to customize HDTV viewing options would be great if more stations actually broadcast in HDTV.
Like everything else in technology, the tech itself isn't inherently evil, just the way you might use it.
>The US has done everything possible to avoid casualties in Afghanistan.
Right.
Like bombing a red cross agency TWICE
after they told us exactly where it was
and hitting a village or too
Jobs didn't come back till after Apple decided to purchase Next instead of BE
So he didn't have a part in the decision. It was made before he returned
how was this offtopic?
Sun clearly states that the PCI card is a feature of the blade 100 (which was the topic of discussion)
I was asking a question about a feature of the topic of discussion and don't see how that concept is off-topic
>>the *truly* innovative Winamp skins...
correction: MacAmp skins
WinAMp was a port of MacAMp which had skins first
