It's not that creating something like Netscape was technically difficult. It's that it was the right idea, put together properly. It takes timing, vision, persistance and a bit of luck to make anything work. What have you created that we should know about?

Myspace? Jesus give me a week I can duplicate it.
Facebook? You cannot even search the "messages" you get. Christ how hard is that?
    YouTube? Uh...?

None of these sites are that amazing. They were just there at the right time and place.

I love the UK. That being said, it's crazy expensive to live there. I've looked at my options and there are almost none that can meet 1/2 my standard of living here in the US. I have no desire to ever work for anyone else again. But if I were to live overseas it would take a pretty hefty salary to get by on.

A currency union (in this case using the Euro) means all the EU countries have to maintain the same economic policy regardless of their own countries economic hardship or gain. Contractionary & Expansionary fiscal policy must be implemented collectively so the GDP of the EU altogether is relevant (as is the growth rate).

The GDP growth in the US is important. The productivity gains are as well.

Not really. The US economic system grows very quickly compared to european nations. Would anyone here be happy with a 0.8% productivity increase or GDP annual growth (here in the US)? Hell no, people would be freaking out. In France and Germany unemployment is significantly higher than here, even during our "recessions".

I would like to point out that I'm not completely disagreeing. Just the fact that economically I don't believe the US could handle less than 1% annual growth. Our spending habits & saving habits would need to change drastically. I would actually prefer to live in europe. I may be immigrating soon or at least getting a work visa & job.

I'm not saying you cannot have both. I'm saying does one of those really matter? An advertisement for a video game will be in the consciousness for mere minutes. Carla Bruscha (sp?) will be in my prayers forever.

Simplifying the situation was not my intent. My belief is people feel helpless to cause change in their world so they attack things that make them feel like they have done something to improve society. For example, the moronic belief that "Fight the terrorists over there so they don't come over here" assumes that terrorists cannot multi-task. On the surface it sounds good, take it to them. However terrorists don't have a country. Tim McVeigh didn't either.

By focusing our attention on inequities in the world (in my opinion) we can cure a lot of the ills of society without having to resort to censoring the minutia.

  17. Re:hrm... on What Do You Think of the 'Hitman' Ad? · · Score: 5, Insightful

People like to be shocked and outraged first. For some reason Americans (and people in general, but it seems more uptight here) tend to get all worked up over things that don't matter. 1980's it was "Eat my shorts" (in retrospect was Bart Simpson that bad?) in the 1990's we had the outrage over South Park and their social commentary (continuing through to today) and now we have people freaking out about some hacked nude scene in GTA.

    Who gives a fuck?

In a world with famine, disease, tyranny, rape, murder, etcetera, we have people concerned more with TV, Video games and their own righteousness, than with the actual suffering of others. If the Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, Jewish, or whatever the fuck god[s] one believes in takes more comfort in his/her/it/their followers indignation at make believe situations than real ones, I would be quite shocked.

Focus on reality and there is no need for the acrimony toward fantasy land.

"activist judges" was probably meant to be sarcastic, since (s)he used the quotes. It was interpreted by me to mean judges are only "activist" when they don't agree with your POV. For example, the SCOTUS has already said abortion is legal. To change it you would need activist judges. No one in the current administration seems to have problems with THOSE activist judges. Hell they might as well be sponsored so we know whom to support with our money. Scalia sponsored by Exxon/Mobil, brining you environmental deregulation and higher prices since 1990.

Obviously. However, if the price were less than the hard copy (by let's say 50%) would the sales of that particular book (in pdf form) increase to raise revenue beyond what it would have been at full price? That would require some research and faith by a book distributor. Consider this, I get probably 90% of my questions related to software development by going to google and various programming websites right now. I have shelves of computer books (most of which are read throughout) but I almost never use them as a reference.

I like this idea O'Reilly Safari But at $220~380 a year it's equivilent to what I actually pay for books so there is no net gain for me. And only 5 Chapters per month can be downloaded. So close but not quite.
