>Sony will replace their remote controls with a PalmOS device...
Have you seen the Philips Pronto? Everytime I sit it next to my palm, I swear I'm seeing twins.:) I've actually had people pick up and start *using* the pronto thinking it *was* a palm, until they realize that my entertainment center is "going nuts".:)
>Yu, the Espresso has a main power supply. Even soccer mum (?) doesn't have a mains supply in her car, typically.
Two observations here. Given enough hacking and time, *someone* will come up with a battery solution. And, in all likelihood, the company selling espresso won't be too far behind in producing a battery solution.
Secondly... for about $50-$100, you can buy power inverters for your car. I use my laptop from my car (when not driving, dammit!) all the time... and it is "plugged into" my car.
I've seen power inverters that provide enough wattage to powerup a monitor...
... >If tiny computers catch on, it's going to be the exact opposite -- airplanes will be the only safe way to travel
Some of us use palm 7s... (and others use similar equipment)... I've yet to be in a car wreck. If your suggestion is that this will allow the average person to use a wireless device... I suggest you relook at the palm 7s (at least). It was convenient having the wireless with me this past weekend, as an online yellow-page section was a godsend. (As was the white pages, come to think of it). And since I wasn't the driver...
I think it is a mistake to assume that people will use these wireless/portable machines when they are driving.
>There won't be such a pressing need for linux video software any more
Good thing none of the other programmers believe in this theory. Wouldn't it suck if RMS opted not to write emacs because "since there is already an editor, there isn't much need..."
Of course, you further mentioned "[i]t would be in Real's interest to have as good a Linux player as possible..." This is where I see the great advantage. Nothing like a little competition to further drive development for "[best|mosted] used product"
Half the security of a unix box is in it's refusal to acknowledge the very existence of an account. In other words, you have won half the battle if you get an/etc/passwd, as you no longer need to guess usernames.
Two things that confuse me about this entire issue...
Didn't someone once say "Imitation is the surest form of flattery"? And, also, wasn't there a court case in the 80s involving lotus about look'n'feel issues? I seem to recall that look'n'feel couldn't be protected to the extent to prevent someone else from using it.
I wish I had mod points to mod this up. Humor and good point in one response.
;)
California should enact this. "turn off your computers when you leave for work!" Wonder how much that would save californians

Kind of like rm -rf, no? or a mistyped dd command?
