It is nice to see someone actually take a stand. It is rare for people to do so. It is like a pro athlete sticking with the team and rejecting a bigger contract.
There are lots of kick butt bands on indy labels!

I agree that OS X may have a tough go at it in the beginning. The delays are really hurting them more than anything. Apple has buzz right now. Hopefully the beta will be decent enough to increase their buzz.
On the killer app question I have several comments. One is that what constitutes a killer app may have changed today. I would say that consumer killer apps today allow users to do tasks previously out of their reach. Out of reach on the cost and complexity fronts. Secondarily, I am very impressed with the Digital Video capabilities that are going into Macs. iMovie is an excellent piece of software. One of the best I have ever used and that is only version 1. If they combine Q-time pro with iMovie in a future release that would be awesome.
That is how much the flusher on Bill's toilet cost.
While yes MSFT was ruled against one must look at the economics of the whole thing. If it only cost MSFT $1 million to prevent a company from hurting them by 25 million through competition then MSFT might have a pretty good deal. Just another angle.
The Gov does not have to sue. They just raise taxes and fees to get their settlement. Then they turn around spend that and more. To be quite truthfull we don't really have much of a surplus as it is. The surplus is SS overpayment which actually adds to the debt. We have run a surplus the past few years, but since 1992 the Debt (different than deficit) has increased in each of those years.
The second class action suit I was part of, but never signed up for, was against Sprint spectrum. They were sued because they switched platforms, but did not offer to move Spectrum customers to Sprint PCS free of charge. Sprint lost the suit. Before I got the judgement in the mail I had got moved to Sprint PCS for free. How? I told them I would go to Bell Atlantic (Now Verizon) if they did not. They were giving away free phones.
I once got a check for 14 CENTS (the other 32 cents went for the stamp - Damn!) from a Blue Cross class action suit in Maryland. The suit was for BC overcharging on premiums. That year my premiums went up over $300. Oh, and I never signed up for the suit. Who made money on that one? The lawyers.
I wonder. Can I sue the goverment for overpayment of taxes due to the surplus. I would love to have a class action against my garbage collectors who find it difficult to get the trash into the truck rather than on the ground - if they pick it up at all. Can I sue for the pshychological abuse administered by the D.C. Motor Vehicles Administration (similar to experiencing the Spanish Inquisition).
The real question is will Apple ship the beta on 9/13 or will it be distributed at the expo or is that when Apple will start taking orders. I cannot wait for any kind of OS X, but as a project manager I am cynical when it comes to delivery dates.
There are actually reforms stalled in congress. The reforms are to allow the Patent office to operate more as a business making it easier to hire staff etc. Oddly enough it looks as if big companies got it held up. They should fund it more or perhaps raise the fees for patent apps. This is a service provided to those that apply for the patents in the first place.
According to the wall street journal article 60% of business process patents are approved. Until the AMZN story I didn't even know you could patent a business process. I can see the process for making stronger steel or something, but one-click and this potential one take the cake.
On the DE Tech website click to the patent page and download a word document that I believe illustrates similar patents.
It seems that many common sense practices may become patented unless the US Patent Office gets a clue or someone reforms the laws. Of course I guess that we must accept that the Government really knows what they are doing (sarcasm not trolling).
Here is a link to DE Technologies' web site page with detailed info on their patent app etc. You can download the patent docs for your perusal.
Agreed, but can I jump over to it as a desktop system? I know there are people that have. For my needs will it run photoshop, iMovie and other apps in its current state? I ask in all honesty because I considered this at one point, but could not compile the necessary info.
I wish this is what Apple did for their desktop right off the bat instead of only the server.
As someone who has used Macs, UNIX and Windows machines (only played with Linux for about 10 minutes) I am frustrated with all platforms. If OSX does not come out soon I will puke. Mac power users need protected memory. I wish Apple had updated this first then worked on the GUI with OSX.
Windows stinks for working with graphics files and has a crappy GUI (IMHO). On the plus side Win NT has protected Memory and plenty of software availability. It is still.dll hell.
Linux is pretty darned cool, but there are certain apps not available that I want to run (Photoshop, Adobe Imagestyler, selection of browsers, iMovie).
The Mac has a great GUI, most of the apps one would need and is a killer digital video editing package.
Now if someone can combine the best parts in a damned system I will be a loyal customer. To date with all of the technology we are not quite there yet.
Lastly, if OS X goes off schedule anymore then next year's purchase will be a dual boot Windows NT (or 2000) and Linux machine. Protected memory all around, an evolving Linux OS, plenty of apps and maybe a few headaches compared to the easy to work with Mac system folder.
Agreed, and I would say that the major networks are realizing having the conservative or centrist point of view do pay. Today's Wall Street Journal (editorial page) had a nice piece on John Stossel's popular shows that present issues from a conservative standpoint (my favorite episode was "Greed" not because it was right in stating greed is good, but rather provoked some interesting thoughts). He gets up to 12 million eyes on his shows.
Regardless, a lot of stuff they report is doom and gloom rubbish. Tornadoes and the like are more important than social security. God help us if another celebrity bites the dust (pricess Di or JFK jr).
Commercial news sucks, its blatently biased, and reporters don't have a clue about facts (They leave a lot of important ones out). It is all emotions based reporting. Death and destruction. Important issues are touched on, but never properly analyzed. The net is a far better news resource, but you have to be able to do some sifting.
For example, Because of the news media (and movies too) many people actually believe that a nuclear power plant can blow up like an a-bomb. At least on the net you could put a link to how a nuclear power plant works in the story. This is no guarantee that someone will click on it, but better than blatently misleading information.
CNN == Clinton News Network
ABC == American Broadcasters for Clinton
CBS == Clinton Broadcasting System
NBC == National Broadcasters for Clinton
If Hillary wins the above four remain the same or just put Bush in where there ar B's (except for CNN it will always be the Clinton News Network).
I pretty much agree, but MSFT is a funny bunch maybe they are not happy making only the OS. They want to build chips too. I guess the big question is what OS's are optimized for Crusoe on TV appliances and handheld's?
Seems as if it may be their attempted answer to Crusoe??? MSFT likes to match every product that ever comes out to the market with something of their own. Some become reality many evaporate.
I buy most of my CD's used. Usually around $8 to $9. That way the big five lose out.
Check out NOFX's new album called Pump Up The Valuum. It has a song about the record industry called "Dinosaurs Will Die". This from a band that has done extremely well without the crappy music industry establishment.
While Apple has a smaller market share than Windows there are still 26 - 30 million Mac users worldwide maybe even more by now. There are a lot of niche developers that appear to make a nice living off of the Mac (Mac related) market. Cassady & Greene and The Omni Group are a couple of examples. C&G writes darned good software to boot. Look at Adobe. Mac users are a significant % of their customer base. I want to say I have heard the number as high as 40%, but may be wrong. It may all come down to a similar question "Why do people write software that is given away free?" Maybe some developers write for the Mac cause they simply love the platform.
Courtney surprised me too. Silicone or not, she made some great points. Although, does TLC even write their songs. I figured that they were record company meat to dangle out on stage while a song played in the background.
This whole issue will end up being good for music. Technology will hopefully break the record companies influence on what music is played in the mainstream. Mainly, there will be less of a mainstream and more ways to discover different bands (v. Britney Spears).
There are musicians that make decent livings outside the mainstream. Dischord records is a label to many great underground bands. They are cool because they know who put the bread on their tables. They go so far as putting pay no more than x$ labels on their CD's (they still sell vinyl too) check out their low prices http://www.southern.com/southern/label/DIS/price s.html (not an ad an example) Several Dischord bands like Fugazi play many $5 benefits and free concerts. Now that is cool.
Stealing music is wrong, but it will happen. A great example of how a free mp3 (not some lame 2 second clip) is good, is my own experience. I downloaded a 2 Skinnee J's song, and liked it so much that I bought the album.
How does this all apply to used CD sales. I buy many of my CD's used?
My question is why are the methodologies being introduced. Are products constantly late? Is quality poor? As a project manager there are basic mistakes that are made time and time again. Poor detailed design, overly optimistic schedules, poor product concept from management, and the list goes on. Management does not know the difficulties of programming; IT sometimes does not understand the marketplace. The key is good communications, common goals and attention to basics.
Answers to your questions:
No I don't buy them unless there is a plan to implement them, and the basics are already being covered. (BASICS - some sort of development lifecycle, people management, good design before any code is written, understandable product concept, good project schedule - don't just try and meet an arbitrary completion time set for management talk to them explain why it will/should take this much time instead of that much time.)
"How do you draw a line between IT & management concepts without hindering your daily work?"
Any type of training will hinder daily work and will eat into your time. If an organization needs to make changes the time needs to be set aside to put them into place. That has to be an understood tradeoff. It is worth it if it does solve problems in the longer run. Regardless people have to admit there is a problem first (kind of like AA).
If there are problems at an organization you need to identify them, try and figure out why they are happening, and make sure the basics are being taken care of. If you are covering what you define as basics and the problem persists then give something new a try.
If it won't support a second monitor, can I use a video projector with my PowerBook under OS X Beta?

My Lombard 333mhx OS 9 refuses to wake up as well. There may be a patch, but i just disabled the auto sleep function.
